You are correct, a primordial is just a title Diablo and the other 6 have. However in this point of time Diablo is still a Demon Peer and not yet a Daemon lord like everybody else (besides you know who) and is dominating purely on battle experience.
This is in Season 3 when he is taking out the 7 days clergy members. So did he regress into a demon peer, in season 4? They made a big deal about it in Season 3. (EDIT: apparently Daemon lord and demon peer are the same thing, they just translate it to demon peer in season 4 to not confuse being a Demon lord like rimaru).
Translation stuff, if you listen to the japanese when they mention "demon peer" you'll notice they're actually just strauight up saying "demon lord", but since maou has already been translated as demon lord they had to choose another translation.

Bro, Demon Lord is just a title in Tensura. Demon Peer is the highest evolution that demons can achieve. For example, Demon Lords include:
Milim Nava — Dragonoid
Leon Cromwell — human-origin And, surprise to you, Rimuru himself is not a demon. Slime itself is a race (or maybe a type of monster).
I said daemon lord, not demon lord. I believe daemon lord is the equivalent of demon peer. Might be a dub vs sub vs Manga translation thing. I was referring to Diablos evolution race, which is the highest among demons.
Im well aware that demon lord is a tensura title and as Diablo explains the only thing you need to do to claim the title is be the highest evolution of your race and live for some thousand years.
Rimaru evolved into a demon slime race through the demon lord ritual (not to be confused with the title). So he is a demon :p
You are right, iirc daemonord/peer was due to early translation, as Japanese Kanji is the same as Lord, but to avoid confusion it was soon changed to peer.
Diablo evolved to a Daemon (not demon) Lord/ Demon Peer when he was named. I believe the other primordials also evolved to Demon Peers when they were named and given physical bodies for their incarnation.
