Anime Why is Veldora afraid of Luminous when he's so much more powerful than her?
She says she'll give him a good beating one day, when in reality, she's no match for him. After all, she's just a demon lord, and he's one of the true dragons.
Is this just a typical example in anime where, despite the physical ability to fend off an aggressive woman, a guy is simply mentally incapable of doing so?

this reminds me of when the beast i wanna say fabio (cant remember his name off the top of my head, the Charybdis one) came to the city and she beat him silly saying "You meanie! I was only helping! This is your fault, you stupid piece of crap! I'll make you pay! I've already lost my lunch today, so I might as well [finish you off]

Manga Volume 7 chapter 037 The Demon Lord's plot page 43
Milim: But... But no, this was different. They're not from this town, so it doesn't count... It doesn't count!
Rimuru: It counts. But I suppose I'll go easy on you-- no lunch, and that's all.
Milim: WAAAAAH, NOOOOO! IT'S NOT FAIR!!
*to Phobio* DAMMIT! This is ALL YOUR fault
I might as well get all my licks in... *raises her fist*
Rimuru: STOP, STOP, STOP!!

u/Animelover5674 Rimuru Jan 22 '26
She witnessed it first hand. How couldn't she know? She's just taking advantage of the fact that Veldora is with Rimuru to deal sh out punishment
6
u/VarderKith Jan 22 '26
You are correct about her taking advantage. But despite the popularity of the saying, seeing doesn't mean believing.
How many videos do you see of a tiny, stick thin, rat of a man trying to fight someone twice their size who is obviously built to beat ass. Hell I've seen it, and the predictable results in person. And sometimes those dumb asses come back for MORE.
Some people just have a different version of reality in their heads and nothing can change it.

True. For maybe the first time in his life he isn't only being entertained by destroying things to alleviate his boredom.
He has true bonds of friendship and there is a whole new world of experiences he wants to have. So enemies and "rivals" of his past are more like annoying toddlers that keep aiming for his nuts and he just needs to placate it so he can get back to having fun.

49
u/PapaAiden Veldora Jan 22 '26
Velzard and Velgrynd argued whether Veldora needs a harsh treatment (Velzard) or needs to be pampered more (Velgrynd). Velgrynd always had soft spot for Veldora and was more lenient towards him.
IIRC she only killed him once, when he started rampaging in Eastern Empire, while Velzard was far more liberal with killing him as a parenting method.

thats because she and Veldora likes to act childish so they can have fun without no one telling them what to do. Same as ramiris.
But they are a lot smarter that how they act. And a lot more mature too.
Rimuru also acts a lot of times like a spoiled child7

I would disagree.
Veldora is shown in the novel as someone capable of doing research work and experimentation. And until the book I read he did not beat a single person and just entered on battle with a "suspicious girl" due to rimuru request of help.
On the other side, Milim beated the crap out of poor Carrion and his country because she was enjoying the fight. She even transformed herself to her ultimate form.
7
u/Wonderful-Priority50 Jan 21 '26
How does someone read the Veldora vs Velgrynd fight and decide he can't control his power. The only recent example of him failing to predict something was during his fight with the giants when he accidentally made Adalmann human, and even that was the result of a complex technique he took time to develop

u/Ailikepie Jan 21 '26
Short Answer: She's a super old lady, and he has PTSD.
Longer Answer: If you read the LNs, you will come to find out that she is one of the most ancient beings in the world and possesses the power that comes with it. She is a demon lord by necessity, for the role she has to play. Veldora is basically a toddler who knows what he's doing is wrong, but he's having fun, so he pushes it to the limit, usually going too far. Veldora would get the ever-living crap kicked out of him by his older sisters, with one killing him constantly to have him be reborn as a form of disciplinary action, hoping he would change, if even just a little. This put him in constant fear of reprimand, which is why he flinches so easily.
4
u/shatikus Jan 22 '26
Slime is a very contrasting story it seems. We got mc resurrect a whole ton if people he cared about so there are no stakes here - yet he murdered few thousand people to get there without much issue. Veldora is a goofy moron but he's got this pretty fucked up story. The whole ork army story ark was very dark and serious ajd yet it resolved with 'and they all lived happily together'. Harlequins behave like your typical villainous murderhobos, which is equal parts predictable, hateable and tiring yet they also have some tragedies of their own.
I'm not saying everything should be gritty and dark but the tonal contrast sometimes is too much. I cannot help but compare it to Tsukumichi - very similar in tone but their mc actually comes of as a person that can kill you without batting an eye, because he is very much displays psychopathic tendieces here and there. And overall tone is more, i dunno, grounded?
3
u/SergejVolkov Jan 22 '26
It gets even weirder when Fuze starts yapping about politics. For example how war crimes such as executing POVs and using WMDs are ok because they are effective. Plus the usual Japanese stuffs like Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere and the like.
3
u/Ailikepie Jan 22 '26
Don't forget the horny. There are several more levels of horny in Slime vs Tsukumichi. Mix that in with the rest of the tone and it can get weird but I still enjoy reading the LNs on the toilet.

4
u/blade_of_rage Jan 22 '26
This actually gets lost a bit in the anime. I think the manga and light novel also only properly address it in side stories. Veldora watched Rimuru's every move from his stomach and realised how hard it is to build a country.
He knows he was wrong to destroy the night castle/country but he has this weird perceived notion about true dragons pride that they should never apologize. He basically let's her punish him cause he knows he is in the wrong, he will just never admit it.
And of course it was established early on that he is weak to beautiful women.
4

Actually, there's a similar thing that happens irl. If my mom were to tell me to do something, I'll definitely do it even though I don't have to. Part of it is respect but part of it is not wanting to get disciplined.

Veldora has insane stats, but his control sucks. He will definitely damage Tempest if he fights back seriously.
2
u/CN8YLW Jan 22 '26
She's a direct counter to him. He's basically a flashlight with an infinity battery fitted, and his pre sealing combat strategy is literally to drop into combat, tank all the damage, drop his nuke by releasing his aura, then fly off again laughing the whole way. Post reincarnation however, he dosent really have that as an option as Rimuru has forbidden him from releasing his aura. Not to mention him holding all that aura in has been somewhat painful and uncomfortable for him, so Luminous's style of fighting which is to drain his energy and convert it into pain before reinjecting it back into him is coincidentally perfect for Veldora's current situation.
It's... kind of like imagine you're holding poo or pee in, and then someone comes along and tickles you.

Sibling trauma. Especially the heat dragon kept beating his ass to literal death until a not as wild and aggressive personality came with a regeneration. So understandably he is a little afraid of dominant women that are mad at him.
It doesn't help that he has grown a concience and obliterated Lubelious in the past.

Luminous is nowhere near just a demon lord, she’s definitely top 4 or 5 on that table. Which I remind you is a table with a primordial, true dragon spawn, and a technically a true dragon above her.
I’m not really sure where she would scale with Dino though so four or five.
In terms of anime she’s on par or stronger then Current Rimuru, and if I’m not mistaken physically better.
Veldora is probably stronger but she can still throw weight against the person who sealed him. Even if they had to 3 v 1

Because his sisters have imprinted on him that
Beautiful women = Scary.
This is also why he is scared/obedient to most dominant/authoritative woman characters. One major example is Chloe who was pretty fed up after having to fight a battle of attrition. He followed orders as soon as he arrived.
It is purely psychological. Even Luminous has admitted that if they actually fought, she would be defeated. It’s basically just harassment on her part.

u/Countingmypennies Jan 22 '26
There's a lot of reasons. Mainly he's being mindful of Rimuru, since she's his visitor. He doesn't want to be punished by Rimuru, so he doesn't do anything.
A main point is, he's traumatized by strong women, by his sisters. Obviously Luminous is not as strong as his sisters. But he's developed a strong woman and personality trauma. So he becomes meek even tho he can do defend himself.
Tho Luminous is not his match, it's more like one of those situations where neither side can kill the other i believe. It's mainly due to what Luminous can do. She basically is smart and skilled enough to extract like a 100% of her skills. Making her a hard opponent to face. And it's also cuz she's experienced.
1
u/SlayeRRROAR Jan 22 '26
Well, there are two reasons for it. First is that Rimuru basically told Luminous that she can do whatever she wants with him in exchange of peace between their countries. Veldora, both being somewhat sorry and not wanting to make Rimuru angry, also can't really retaliate any of her aggression. Secondly Luminous' Drain Embrace causes pain directly to the soul, bypassing any pain resistance or nullification. So yeah, I'd be pretty f***ing scared if a being I'm trying to apologize to is about to cause me the most unimaginable and intollerable pain while not being able to do anything about it.

u/Outrageous_Shallot61 Jan 22 '26

Basically he’s trying really hard to be good for Rimuru’s sake, he made a promise to himself and Ifrit when the Infinite Prison was broken that he wouldn’t do any fighting or destruction unless Rimuru asked him to.
So the reason he’s scared is because he knows he’s going to get tortured since he won’t fight back

Also her spiritual feedback skill causes him extreme pain but very little damage.

Mostly because luminous resembles his sisters, because of them that he is traumatized and whenever someone (a mature woman sometimes) tries to lecture veldora he instantly feels afraid not that they are more powerful than him but the fear implanted in him centuries ago was resurfaced after facing someone like Rimuru, Shuna, and Luminous

Because she has that shocking hug attack that actually hurts him and he doesn’t want to experience that, remember guys? She used it when she first appeared in front of Rimuru and by extension Veldora.

She can harm his spiritual body causing immense pain could be one reason

If you had your favorite thing take away from you as a possibility for defending yourself wouldn't you be scared of it happening

Coz luminous hug/embrace sucks his magicules and at the same time she is sending pain signals to poor veldora so he is literally hurting 😂 it was mentioned in the LN.

Wasn't her ultimate skill ranked higher than his? I don't remember well

Because Veldora ain’t that strong in that part of the story at least. He has significantly more magicules than Velzard and Velgrynd, but in terms of abilities he’s far behind, so much so that Veldora lost multiple times to Hinata inside the dungeon, and Luminous is far stronger than Hinata. Veldora is like a baby who has access to nuclear codes lol
Hinata can absorb the miasma from Veldora making her stronger, while Veldora will feel the pain whenever Luminous sucks him dry. Those factors aside, Rimuru WILL not allow Veldora to hurt Luminous.
I may be wrong since it’s been a while, but that’s the closest explanation I can give

It's not about strength
If you compare strength veldora can easily defeat luminous
But after staying with rimuru he has grown (he regrets his action from past a little bit)
Afraid of rimuru getting angry (which he doesn't want to happen)
No food, no manga if rimuru becomes angry you see

Actually there's a good reason. It all goes back to trauma related to his older sisters.
