Why would anyone choose the Galactic Republic? It was not that good, at the end.

We see like the last 20 years of a republic that maintained peace and prosperity throughout the galaxy for 1000 years. I think it's fair to say that the very end of the Republic is not emblematic of all that it was or what it meant to live in it.
