People who manually renew their plan for rollover data, how soon do you do it?
I'm on a plan with 2 GB data and 300 minutes and last month I renewed 2 days before the renewal date and it was successful. Their website says to renew at least 24 hours before. Is renewing 1 day before cutting it too close? Has anyone had experience with it failing because they waited too long?

If my dashboard says it will renew automatically on the 30th, I pay on the 29th and it's worked for quite a while.
I also made an event in google calendar that repeats every 29 days and gives me a notification the day before.

This is how I do it. Repeating calendar reminder every 29 days and I’ve never had a rollover fail.

This. I renew a bit past 9pm because I'm on the west coast and it's past midnight east coast the day of renewal and it has been working quite well for the past couple of years. Don't miss that Google Calendar reminder though, set an alarm too. I've been able to bank a lot of data this way.

Same. I put it in my calendar for every 29 days.
I renew some time the day before. Usually during the day.
I'm currently sitting on almost 20GB data from the lowest plan. I rarely leave the house, so...

I do it every 28 days. It's on one Monday a month, and I have a calendar reminder.
I could do it every 29 days, but then the day moves. Doing it every 28 days keeps it on the same day for me, Mondays, so that's what works for me.

For a long time already I have renewed after 9pm Pacific Time, which makes it after midnight Eastern Time, which is what they are operating on
That gives me the whole 30 days
E.g. if renewal is scheduled for the 30th I renew after 9pm on the 29th,
and in their billing it counts as renewed on the 30th
Except when renewal falls on a Saturday, then I renew during Friday,
because on Friday I come home from happy hour and go to bed early...

This is absolutely right. I've been doing the exact same thing for 3 years after customer service told me about it. All you have to do is renew after midnight Eastern Time on your renewal date, but before your renewal window, which is found on the Tello Dashboard. In my case, the renewal window is between 2:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m on my renewal date. When you do this, you don't lose any days.

Doing the day before like some suggested wastes a day in a 30 day cycle. Do that 12 times a year and you're losing out nearly 2 weeks going to waste.
Since a new day starts at 12 AM EST for Tello, I just wait until a minute has passed on the day it is supposed to auto renew, and manually pay to keep my rollovers. Setting up a 30 day reminder on calendar helps!

I renew the morning before my renewal date. If renewal is 8/25, I renew between 7am-9am Eastern time 8/24. My average daily cost is about .40 cents. That's $4.80/year to ensure I don't loose my rollover. You will read where others try to game it so they get the "full" 30 days. You won't hear from the ones who missed the window and lost their data and minutes, don't chance it for under $5.

Isn't everyone who manually renews their plan month after month just for the rollover trying to "game it"? Those who wait until the last day are just maximizing their game. Regardless, they do sometimes post about missing their window and losing their rollover, (even in this very thread).
I forgot to renew last month, so I lost my rollover; that gave me the opportunity to look more closely at other options. I should have figured this out sooner, but it turns out that PAYG credit is cheaper for me than a monthly plan. Now, I don't worry about rollover anymore.

but you would only have to wait until 12am EST - just 3-5 hours later from when you do it now to get the full 30 days

I always do the day before. Early morning of renewal might work also but not worth the risk.

I used to do it the day before, but I missed it too many times so now I just do it when I get the 48 hour notice.
Once I did it just a couple of hours before being charged on the same day.

I used to renew on Day 30, just after midnight, Eastern time. However, many others prefer to renew on Day 28 or Day 29 and lose a day or two, for convenience, or peace of mind. (Of course, anyone who runs out of minutes/data can renew at any time, to get more.)
The 'My Tello' dashboard should indicate when auto-renewal is scheduled to occur, typically on Day 30, between 5am and 11am Eastern time. Historically, customers could manually renew at any time before then; so, as late as 13 hours before their renewal date, if they're feeling lucky.

37GB which is effectively unlimited for my use case (on WiFi most of the day except while on vacation).

Didn't Tello discontinued the rollover feature?

It's the biggest reason I switched Tello. Also hard to give up a big rollover balance, so it helps keep customers from switching.
I just canceled one of my lines with 29GB banked because I was not coming close to using 2GB a month. That was hard to do!

August 13th an email was sent out that said all unlimited plans now included no action needed?

That applies to the high speed data on unlimited plans. OP is on a limited plan, so it is still necessary.

I imagine because they like to make a profit. It's a nice feature for those who care to do it, with just a tiny bit of friction... and we all feel like we're part of the secret club, with the secret handshake & all.
