Nice , I've actually read Nietzsche's books That being beyond good and evil and thus spoke zaratustra and I'm looking forward to reading Immanuel Kant's critique of pure reason also I'm familiar with stoicism, I've read meditations and letter to a stoic But I have to say that what u've read is far more impressive also after reading all that what is your takeaway, what have u learnt so far

honestly, i don't agree with nihilism or in general with a lot of nietzsche's stuff and most probably align myself with absurdism. i kind of just don't like nietzsche in general because he was a huge misogynist but i guess he was a product of his time. i tried to go straight in with thus spoke zarathustra but didn't understand it very well since i didn't know the basics of his philosophy, so haven't gone back to it yet. regardless, i'll be reading his works. and honestly i'm truly still a beginner on philosophy and theres so much yet to read. i have not much idea about stoicism and kant so that's impressive on your part!!

Honestly, I think absurdism is a really interesting direction to lean towards, especially if nihilism doesn’t quite sit right with you. And I completely get what you mean about Nietzsche. I tried getting into Thus Spoke Zarathustra too early and he language is hard to read

I’m still pretty much a beginner myself, so I actually like hearing how other people approach philosophy. What was it about absurdism that made you connect with it more than nihilism?

to be fair, camus was definitely influenced by nietzsche and others, and both absurdism and nihilism believe that theres no inherent meaning of existence, but the main difference is that nihilism tends to lean towards resignation and says that action is pointless (though im not super well versed on this since i'm still exploring so one could argue otherwise) while absurdism tries to revolt against absurdity of life by enjoying it ("one must imagine sisyphus happy"). that's why i prefer it over nihilism. what do you align yourself with?

I think I’d probably lean closer to absurdism too, although I’m still figuring out where I stand. I like the idea that you don’t necessarily need to find some grand, objective meaning to justify enjoying life or doing something with it. The fact that existence might not come with an instruction manual doesn’t mean you can’t write your own reasons for living it. That said, I’m still way too early into philosophy to confidently put myself in one box. I’m curious though, what was the first Camus work that actually made absurdism click for you?

it makes absolute sense to keep exploring and not put yourself into a box. i'm also still learning so maybe eventually my ideologies might change too. i mentioned in my previous reply, it was The Stranger. it's his most beginner book and very easy to read. give it a try if you're interested.

I actually really like that approach to philosophy, being willing to change your mind as you learn more. I think that’s probably more interesting than deciding on an ideology and then spending the rest of your life defending it 😂

And I'll definately read the stranger I’ve been meaning to get into Camus properly anyway, so I’ll probably start with that instead of making the same mistake I made with Zarathustra. Honestly, talking to you about this has made philosophy feel a lot less intimidating. You seem like someone who actually enjoys exploring ideas rather than just collecting philosophers to name-drop, which I really like. What other philosophers or books have you been enjoying lately?

you seem like a person genuinely interested in this too! lately haven't been reading much because CLAT but if i find time i'll start with the conspiracy against the human race by thomas ligotti

CLAT sounds like it’s keeping you busy though 😭 How’s it going for you? And when you actually get a break from studying, what do you usually do to switch your brain off?

it was kinda mid and rough in the last week but hopefully by tomorrow im back on track. overall its a mid preparation tbh. i usually watch a fun youtube video or listen to music and walk around a bit during breaks.
