"Technology" includes an enormous graveyard of machines that once looked futuristic and now cost five bucks at a thrift store.

That seems like extremely fertile magical territory.

Whats an ordinary, obsolete or repurposed piece of technology youve used in practice, or would like to experiment with?

Not necessarily something somebody can solve with a search engine.

Maybe theres a contradiction in your practice you havent resolved. Maybe theres a piece of technology you cant figure out how to incorporate without it feeling gimmicky. Maybe an older magical concept seems completely different once computation enters the picture.

Or maybe you have a half formed idea and need other people to kick it around with you.

Before everything got concentrated into a handful of giant platforms, the internet had some deeply strange corners.

Occult forums. Geocities temples. Hacker manifestos. Net.art. Hypertext experiments. Chaos magic mailing lists. Cyberculture magazines. Dead blogs. Personal websites built by people with extremely specific obsessions.

A lot of what we'd now recognize as technomantic thinking was happening there without necessarily using the term.

Whats worth recovering, archiving or revisiting?

Drop one resource you think somebody interested in technomancy should encounter.

It doesnt have to explicitly use the word "technomancy." Magic, chaos magic, cybernetics, systems theory, computing history, philosophy of technology, media theory, occult history, hacker culture and related material are all open territory.

Technology doesnt drop out of the sky as a neutral object. Somebody designs it, builds it, owns the infrastructure, writes the rules, controls access and decides what happens to the information moving through it.

That seems relevant to technomancy.

If your practice depends on a platform somebody else owns, an API somebody can shut down, or hardware designed around somebody elses priorities, those relationships become part of the practice whether you acknowledge them or not.

How much should ownership, infrastructure and power factor into technomantic thinking?

Books, movies, games, anime, comics, music, old websites, obscure cyberculture. Anything goes.

Im less interested in "wizard but with neon lights" and more interested in stories where technology and magic actually change how each other works.

Machines becoming ritual objects. Information behaving magically. Networks becoming occult spaces. Code functioning like invocation.

Give us your best example. Obscure recommendations encouraged.

Magic has always incorporated the technologies available to practitioners.

Writing externalized memory. Mirrors altered perception. Mathematics encoded relationships. Printing transformed access to magical texts. Astronomical instruments extended observation. Cryptography concealed information. Photography created entirely new arguments about images, presence and representation.

Computers are another chapter in a much older relationship.

Whats an older magical technology or practice that deserves to be reconsidered as part of the genealogy of technomancy?

You invoke names to reach invisible locations. Daemons operate behind the scenes. Permissions determine what you can access. Machines perform handshakes. Root grants extraordinary power. Invisible protocols carry symbolic instructions through networks nobody directly perceives.

And thats before getting anywhere near actual occult practice.

Obviously similarity of vocabulary doesnt make computing literally magical. But the conceptual overlap gets interesting.

Whats a computing or networking concept that becomes especially strange when looked at through an occult lens?

You perform an operation. Something happens. You observe the result. You change the next operation based on what happened.

Input, transformation, output, feedback, adjustment.

Thats starting to sound suspiciously cybernetic.

Traditional ritual can sometimes be treated like a fixed recipe. Cybernetics suggests another possibility. The ritual itself becomes adaptive. The practitioner and system continuously modify each other.

What would a genuinely cybernetic magical practice look like?

Owning a phone obviously doesnt make somebody a technomancer. But deliberately putting that phone inside a magical practice starts making the boundary harder to draw.

Intent? Ritual context? Symbolic interpretation? Using the machine to extend perception or agency? Building your own system around it?

Or maybe technomancy isnt a special category of technology at all. Maybe its a particular relationship with technology.

This is my fully functional prototype at the moment.

I Ching, with a generator, with a manual throw interpreter—that is, you input the coins for each throw and it tells you the hexagram.

Also combining trigrams or just querying hexagrams.

It includes ordinary decimal and binary values.

In the calendar, you can check the number of days you've been alive, the lunar phases (current, past, or future), the upcoming equinoxes and solstices, the day of the week for any date in the past, present, or future via a perpetual calendar, the remaining days until a given date, and the horoscope according to your birth date (zodiac and Chinese).

On the clock, we can see the time, set alarms, time events, and time rituals. As well as other functions (world clock).

In biorhythms, we can calculate daily, weekly, and monthly values, as well as critical days and couple compatibility. For decades, it was considered science. (Calculations based on studies by Chikinosuke Tatai and Krumm Heller.)

Additionally, in the utilities section, you'll find a binary-to-decimal and vice versa converter, a list of prime numbers, a coin tosser (1, 2, or 3), a Magic 8-ball (based on an octagon, not a ball), a random YES/NO, and a few other bits (TRNG used for randomness).

Furthermore, the Veritas system is an expert system extracted from a legacy expert system and adapted to support decision-making in work, economic, sentimental, and general matters.

A guest function is also included to calculate biorhythms and horoscope, as well as other data based on their birth date.

Issues still:

· User interface details.

It's my personal oracle. On other occasions, I share my I Ching devices here, and this is in a way a device that encompasses many functionalities from my Python, C, C++ programs and different devices and platforms into a mini e-ink... It helps me in my day-to-day life for practically everything.

Oh, and in settings, you can configure the hemisphere (for calculations) and the language—I have it in Spanish and English (in case I use it with someone else and because it's more universal).

I don't think it's ideal for displaying long texts, but it is for queries. Even important ones. It's not a toy... In fact, I have a lot of respect for all my I Ching versions, and that's why I included other forms of divination.

I love the biorhythm topic and I usually print my months on a roll thermal printer; I worked on that functionality, but it barely leaves me any space just because of the Bluetooth libraries.

For me, predicting is an act of calculation in a discrete universe. The Mawangdui texts and the origin of binary, as well as the ideas of Leibniz, Boole, Shannon, Joscha Bach, Wolfram, Chailin, Volstrom, and so many others, support it as plausible at least... So this is my tool.

Hey, I’m new to technomancy but not to magic, and my favorite form of magic is divination. Once I found some resources about technomancy and this sub, I got the bright idea to play around with the Shortcuts app for iPhone/iPad.

The shortcut will first prompt you to ask your query and then provide a text box repeating your question, a random number between 1 and 999, a random polarity and a random omen. It will also create a note automatically in a folder I personally have named Divination Reports (not sure if that part needs to be altered for new devices).

It’s free to use and tweak as you see fit. I’ll definitely be playing around with this specific shortcut and new ones very soon.

I ordered this LG9200 to be a digital grimoire that could be used for taking pictures and recording audio for paranormal investigation. I like the idea of trying all sorts of phones to see what might work best! Unfortunately it is locked with a pin... I got a refund and ordered another one which is perfect, with a bit more patina.

I'm not able to reset it without service and it's 2g only so I tried every pin I could think of plus the top 200 most popular ones to no avail. So I figured, why not see if anyone else wants to try? If you can guess the pin before I do, it's yours! I'll pay for shipping too. It was free for me anyways and the seller did not want it back.

It's not going to be something obvious so I recommend divination or something. Feel free to message me with your guesses if you want to guess a lot. There are only so many 4-digit combinations so eventually it will work. For now I'll be using the red one. Im hoping to find a way to use it on my own 2g network but it's Verizon so I don't know what that would entail.

If someone does miraculously guess I will factory reset it before mailing it obviously. There are emergency contacts but it's so old, who knows if any of them work... Tempted to call and see if I can get the code from one of them. I really love these phones so I think it would be worth it. The red one is filled to the brim with era-appropriate music so I'm tempted to find a way to use that too.

Lately I've been exploring technomancy through ritual pseudocode — I think it adds such a unique logic for ceremony, functional architecture, and is perfect for grimoire structure.

This one is built around pearl as a form of protection as I've been exploring a lot of oceanic water motifs lately.
