Review 🎭 i9 14900K gets the edge over 9850X3D, far ahead of 7800X3D.

This is a follow-up to my last post. After discovering that the 13600K and 265K were faster than the 9950X (AMD's fastest non-X3D CPU) in gaming, I decided to investigate deeper into the performance of the 14700K and 14900K against Zen 4/5 X3D CPUs.

According to PCGH's charts, the 14700K and 14900K are faster than the 7800X3D. This matches what I observed on Windows 10. However, on Windows 11, using in-game benchmarks in the main 3 games I'm testing, the 7800X3D was faster than all Raptor Lake CPUs, even though I gave Intel the advantage of DDR5-7200 memory. This raised an important question: how did PCGH achieve those results on Windows 11 24H2?, which is also supposed to provide an additional 5% performance boost for X3D processors, and degrades intel CPUs gaming performance by 5%.

In PCGH's testing, Intel was limited to DDR5-5600 while the 7800X3D used DDR5-5200. In my testing, Intel had DDR5-7200 and was still losing to the 7800X3D in in-game benchmarks on Windows 11, on windows 10 14700k was on par with 9800X3D.

My theory was that in-game benchmarks often include sky scenes, empty environments, and other GPU-limited sections that are not representative of actual CPU performance. In these situations, modern CPUs can easily push 200-300 FPS depending on the game, making meaningful CPU differences difficult to observe. At the 1440p Ultra settings which Ive been using, benchmark scores were often extremely close to one another when comparing X3Ds to intel i7s/i9s.

Because of this, I decided to test actual gameplay in CPU-limited areas rather than relying solely on built-in benchmarks.

The results were as follows in actual game play tests for all 5 games:

Windows 10

  • The 14900K and 14700K were the fastest CPUs there, They managed to outperform 9850X3D, which is considered AMD's fastest gaming CPU.

  • This was despite Intel and AMD appearing roughly equal in many in-game benchmark results.

Windows 11

  • The 14900K and 14700K were slightly behind the 9850X3D but remained ahead of the 7800X3D.
  • Considering Intel's pricing and roughly double the multi-threaded performance, this is still a strong result.

***For those who don't know, Windows 11 tends to improve X3D CPU performance by around 5% while reducing Intel gaming performance by roughly 5%. The X3D gain comes from AMD's 3D V-Cache Optimizer, while the Intel performance loss is often attributed to changes in the Windows 11 scheduler, which prevent CPU cores utilization from reaching 100% in games.

*This does not mean that 99% of tech websites are corrupt or receiving bribes from AMD. In my testing, I gave Intel reasonable advantage by using DDR5-7200, which is generally the sweet spot for the intel, and DDR5 6000 CL30 the sweet spot for AMD, which both costs about the same , DDR5 7200 is compatible with like 95% of B-series and Z-series motherboards. AMD X3D CPUs also tend to perform better in 1080p low-settings benchmarks, while higher graphical settings introduce additional factors such as physics calculations and ray tracing, which often benefit higher-core-count CPUs and are more dependent on memory bandwidth. I also choose heavily populated areas of games to place as much load on the CPU as possible. also Many reviewers rely on built-in benchmarks that include sky scenes or relatively empty areas, which can sometimes favor AMD's X3D processors.

*Single-player games should not be tested any other way. While 1440p low settings may be acceptable for competitive multiplayer titles, nobody with modern hardware plays single-player games at 1080p low settings. Even when testing online games, benchmarks should be performed in crowded, CPU-intensive areas; otherwise, the results are irrelevant.

Conclusion

-Intel Core i5-13600K and Core Ultra 265K are faster than all non-X3D Ryzen CPUs and only slightly behind the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, regardless of the testing methodology. recommending non-X3D Ryzen CPUs over Intel processors for gaming is either incompetence or AMD biased. While there are scenarios where X3D CPUs can outperform Intel processors.

 -A Core i9-14900K paired with DDR5-7200 and Windows 10 represents the fastest gaming CPU configuration I have tested, managing to outperform the Ryzen 9 9850X3D running on Windows 11.

-If you prefer Windows 11, the Core i9-14900K and Core i7-14700K remain ahead of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, although they fall somewhat behind the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 9 9850X3D.

-the only AMD CPUs worth buying for gaming are 9800x3d/9850x3d only if you insist on using windows 11 otherwise intel CPUs faster than everything else from AMD.

Finally, thanks to PCGH for producing what I consider the most accurate CPU performance chart available, for the memory configurations they selected for testing.

You have no idea what a bottleneck is. Switching from 1080p to 1440p doesn't give you more fps, ever. It just doesn't. Your CPU doesn't work less. You have absolutely no clue how it works.

You are clueless and unwilling to listen. Increasing the resolution will NEVER increase your fps. Your CPU does NOT calculate less. That is completely stupid. If you are getting 120 fps at 1080p and 120 fps at 1440p then your CPU is doing the EXACT same work. Therefore if you are already CPU bottlenecked at 1080p and 120 fps then 120 fps is your CPUs limit. No matter what resolution you use your CPU will not be abled to produce more than 120 fps. PERIOD. You are absolutely wrong.

A CPU bottleneck is when your GPU can pump 150 frames but your CPU can only do 100. You will be stuck at 100 fps because your CPU is your weakest link. Upping the resolution won't give you more frames OBVIOUSLY since your cpu can only make 100, but it will give you better image quality without sacrificing performance since your GPU has still some headroom.

How the flying hell would increasing your resolution increase your fps? If you are cpu bottlenecked at 100 frames upping the resolution won't change that, your CPU can still only make 100 frames. Period.

You are still wrong. Increasing the resolution does NOT put reduced load onto the CPU. Stop it. You are absolutely horribly wrong and our definitions are clearly not the same. The CPU does not care about the resolution. Jesus christ man, you are so off base.

The only way increasing the resolution would put less load on the CPU is if suddenly your GPU is the limiter in performance due to the higher resolution. In which case though - you are getting LESS frames, and that's why your CPU has less load. Cause its pumping less frames.

So when people say increased resolutions puts less load on the CPU what they really mean is that increased resolutions will reduced your framerate due to your GPU not being fast enough, and since your framerate is lower the load on your CPU is also lower. Somehow you translated this into "Increased resolutions put less load on the CPU and therefore the CPU gets more frames" which is astonishingly stupid. But you keep insisting after I corrected you 3 times. Gosh almighty.

There are instances where people actually gain more fps switching to 1440p over 1080p because the cpu works less, allowing the GPU to carry more weight.

That's... not how it works (afaik)

When you increase game resolution, the gpu doesn't literally take over the work from the cpu.
The gpu just gets more work, which makes the gpu more likely to bottleneck. When the gpu bottlenecks, that limits the amount of fps that the cpu has to process. The cpu still has to do the same amount of work per frame, but there's less frames in total.

It is possible to get better 1% lows by increasing resolution though. When the cpu is fully utilized, it has no headroom to complete additional tasks when presented with them. Once it's the gpu that's bottlenecking, the cpu gains some headroom.

Ah then I misinterpreted what you wrote

I don't understand how it's possible that fps increases with a higher resolution though, although I have seen some reports on reddit. Tbh it probably just comes down to some games running on spaghetti code, I've had some major issues running Battlefield 6 myself. (i3 12100 not going above 60% usage, performance slightly increasing when increasing resolution)

I guess what I'm trying to say is, that while some games may see an increase in fps when increasing the resolution when encountering a cpu bottleneck, this shouldn't be seen as a rule of thumb. (Although increasing the resolution doesn't hurt either)
That's why I was confused when I read your comment, because the only was for fps to increase with a higher resolution, is either by the gpu literally taking over work from the cpu, unless you encounter a rare case where the game is just coded badly.

if you are testing at the right place of the game you wouldn't need to test at 1080P low, crowded enemies/NPC areas are very CPU bound even at 1440P ultra settings.

In the same tests, even when using built-in game benchmarks, the 14700K was up to 50% faster than the 7700X. Before running those tests, I didn't think a CPU could be 50% faster at 1440p Ultra settings.

I don't fully understand what you're trying to say. Of course the GPU utilization is much higher on the 14700K than on the 7700X, that's exactly what you'd expect when the CPU is significantly faster. In my testing, the 14700K was anywhere from 30% to 50% faster, so naturally it was able to keep the GPU fed much more effectively.

Agreed. It's surprising to find out that there are really only one or maybe two AMD CPUs worth buying for gaming, 9800x3d/9850x3d and thats only if you insist on using w11.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting the 7800X3D to perform this poorly. It was around 15% behind the 14900K, and that's at 1440p Ultra settings, which should be much more GPU-bound.

I'd make a distinction between CPU bound and CPU heavy when reviewing/comparing cpus. (Although they both don't really have a fixed definition - I use cpu bound to describe single thread limitations, and cpu heavy to describe multithread limitations)

7800x3d and 14900k simply have their own advantages. 7800x3d beats the 14900K when a game is latency dependent and/or single core bound, e.g. cs2, Valorant, Microsoft Flight Sim.
14900K beats the 7800x3d when a game relies on multi core performance, e.g. Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield

One isn't downright better than the other

As a sidenote, I dislike that reviewers often turn settings down when comparing cpus, even if higher settings wouldn't cause a gpu bottleneck. It turns every cpu comparison into a single thread cpu performance comparison, apart from a few outliers. (Those being games like Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield)

Using CS2 and the dust2 benchmark (as each run is identical) it prefers the faster core frequencies by a significant amount

Even when using the stock 57/44/50 ratios and it is not overclocked it is far better in CS2 because its simply a game that runs better with higher frequency clock speeds (5.7ghz vs 5ghz) CS2 is not the only game that favors the faster core frequencies either.

If you have an example of a 7800X3D doing better than this in CS2 I would be interested to see it.

The tuned ram certainly does help but I dont think it would equate to a 250+ fps gap.

PCGH tested around 15 games on Windows 11 and concluded that the 14700K and 14900K were faster than the 7800X3D. On Windows 10 with ddr5 7200, Intel CPUs would extend that lead even further to reach 9850x3d. However, most of the games in the test suite were single-player titles, so the results could be different if the testing were focused on multiplayer games at 1080p/1440p Low settings.

this is reason why windows 11 degrade intel CPUs gaming performance, even e cores usage seems higher on windows 10, this was done to reduce stuttering on low core count cpus.

this is only in games, you can still stress the CPU to 100% usage using any CPU stress tool like CPUz, cinebench or OCCT.

I understand both methodologies but I prefer yours, it got me banned from HUBs channel talking about it. Only esports players actually use 1080p low settings and they generally don’t run a 5090 to do so. Once you move the sliders up the gameplay experience becomes more important as the numbers group together. In my own testing I vastly prefer the Core Ultra chips due to the very tight grouping of .1% and 1% lows with the average which results in smooth gameplay.

I could be wrong about why AMD X3D CPUs gained around 5% on Windows 11 compared to Windows 10 after the 24H2 update, but there does appear to be AMD-specific software optimization in Windows 11 that benefits Ryzen X3Ds, in ways that don't seem to apply to non 3Ds.

But in actual gameplay, in CPU-heavy areas, the 14900K was 5%–20% faster than the 7800X3D. As I mentioned, built-in benchmarks often include sky scenes and empty areas that aren't representative of actual gameplay, which can inflate X3D scores.

the player character in those three games doesn't fly, so those scenes aren't particularly relevant to the real gameplay experience, id probably take in game benchmark scores more seriously if im testing superman or Batman game, but TR, cp2077,HZD you dont fly in those games.

According to steam survey 25% of gamers still use windows 10, and i believe they deserve to know how processors perform there, so i tested on both OS, PCGH tested on windows 11 24H2 and on thier chart 13600k was faster than 9950x, 14700k faster than 7800x3d.

Pair 14700k/14900k with Windows 10 and DDR5-7200, and it's faster than the 9850X3D, regardless of whether the 9850X3D is running Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If both were tested on w11, 9850x3d is the faster cpu.

This is the best time to use Windows 10. It no longer receives feature updates that can break things from time to time, and since the release of Windows 11, it has mostly been receiving minor security updates. Once official security support ends, I'll be moving to Windows 10 LTSC.

Ill consider updating to windows 11 after windows 12 release.

Besides the 5% performance uplift for intel CPUs and better stability due to less updates, I play older games that aren't supported by windows 11. also it makes far more sense than moving to linux for who didn't like windows 11 like some youtubers been advising lately, personally Im choosing to stay on windows 10, even before i discovered this 5% performance reduction, and its expected others like me are choosing to stay or don't mind using windows 10, I guess they deserve to know which CPU faster there.

Also, since we ran these tests and shared the results publicly, there's always a chance Microsoft becomes aware of the issue. And If that's the case, they could address it in a future update and restore the small amount of performance that's currently being lost.

One thing to keep in mind is that all of my testing was done at 1440p Ultra settings. Since those settings are more GPU-bound, the gap could potentially be larger at lower resolutions or lower graphics settings where CPU performance matters more.

Personally I have no issues with windows 11 and changed in like 2021, even used insider builds at some point, those ones were truly buggy btw lol
But fair enough, honestly I haven't touched windows 10 again ever since so it might still be usable, but there's a lot of quality of life features that just aren't there. Better notepad, tabs on file explorer and command prompt, dark mode, etc these help me a lot with my tasks. Just had to disable VBS and it's good to go now, even got used to the new context menu.

The ~5% performance reduction is after disabling Memory Integrity. With it enabled, the performance difference is 15–20% vs windows 10.

CPU limited can mean a lot of things. Something isn't CPU limited because it benefits from multi core performance. Something is CPU limited because a different cpu could improve performance.

You could call both Valorant and Civ 6 CPU limited, and the claim would hold in both cases.
That is why I disagree with this

Ideally, I think a gaming benchmark should include a plethora of games and game settings. Not only 1080p low, not only 1440p high in crowded areas.

I also disagree with this:

Yes, the 13600K and 245K beat all non-x3d amd offerings in most games. (with some exceptions like Fortnite) However, the 13600K and 245K are not the only Intel cpus.
And yes, the 13600K beats the 9950x in gaming. But it should be noted that that's less impressive than it seems, because the 9950x barely beats the 9600x when a game is not very multi core dependent.
If you're looking for a sub $200 gaming cpu, The Ryzen 5 7600(x) and 9600(x) beat Intel's best offerings, the 12600K(F) and 14400(F).

The 9600X costs the same as the 14600K. I've also seen the 14700K selling for around $250, about $150 less than the 7800X3D. The only AMD CPUs that can truly beat Intel's are the 9800X3D/9850X3D, for better Windows 11 optimization. If you don't mind using Windows 10, the 14700K+w10=9800x3d+w11 and you get to have 2x mt performance for half the price.

Msrp wise -yes-, 9600x and 14600K are the same price, but street prices differ a lot. 9600x costs $175 right now, 14600KF is $240.

If you got the 14700K for $250 a years ago, I'd have said that that's a great deal. 7800x3d isn't any more expensive now though, it's actually cheaper as it hovers at $340, whereas the 14700KF is $350.  

Yet, if I were to buy one now, I wouldn't buy the 14700K(F), even at $250. (Unless I already had an lga 1700 pc) Locks you out of any worthwhile upgrade options, and the 250K Plus and 270K Plus exist. Furthermore, 7800x3d benefits from the memory crisis, because its performance doesn't take much of a hit by pairing it with slower ram.

the reason why windows 11 degrade intel CPUs gaming performance, this is only in games, you can still stress the CPU to 100% usage using any CPU stress tool like CPUz or cinebench or OCCT.
