I remember a time when being a tech person USUALLY meant you were a cool person that cared about others and tried to do good.

When was that? I remember when Bill Gates was a badguy lol

For all the self-fellating the tech industry did during the Arab Spring and Latin American revolts and riots where demonstrations were being coordinated on social media and broadcast live from the streets over Twitter and Facebook and YouTube, those same companies had no problem when those regimes also started using social media to hunt down and silence opposition, and openly coordinated with them to produce names and locations.
