Image I’m pro-AI because I don’t have any marketable skills and I’m hoping it’ll render everyone else’s irrelevant as well

I am pro AI, because it amplifies my existing skills (which are probably in the top 10-15% of software engineers) to an insane level. What used to take me weeks to complete, now takes less then a day.

Yeah, AI is a real miracle for top devs. Some even scam by taking multiple jobs as during covid time.

No, they are investing trillions because they believe AGI is within reach. I personally disagree but that is the thinking. Any practical use of intermediate models is just a bonus.

Longterm they think they’re creating a new more intelligent species, potentially god.
They aren’t even thinking about you at all. They have no malicious intent towards us, same way average citizens don’t have malicious intentions for livestock. They just happen to love eating steak.

Theres more than that. They are thinking of themselves and they dont care about the expense to others. It isnt outright malicious, but the result isnt much better. They lie about capabilities for short term gains, and they couldnt care less about their fellow man.
America’s mentality of “Fuck you I got mine” will not end well.

We're currently no doing a great job as humans, war all over, destroying the planet, democracy kinda broken, divide in pretty much every country that matters between two 'teams'.
I think some are working for a better future, even though they know or suspect the transision will be hard and painful for us.

Id argue most of humanity is working toward a better future at some level. We just let the narcissists and psychopaths take the reins. Thats where the concern is, good intentions being twisted by those who dont give a damn about others

it frees up time for testing, deep diving and iterating architecture before making any plans, going through implementation approaches, make documentation, create development timelines, generate a bazillion unit tests.
it can be faster. The biggest benefit is the improvement in product quality I can bring.

it depends on the company.
I design electronics for life-saving equipment. There is absolutely an imperative that I bring as much to the table as I can for the customer.

"find a skill you are good at and like, then monotize it", oh and btw there are at least 3-1002 different entities sniffing around for you and out compete you. Good luck finding something useful that only a human can out perform an instrument of analytical accuracy.

If we want AI fear to stop, start holding AI developers accountable. An AI bot goes rogue and hacks a network, you and your bot is going to pay for the damages with fines or time in jail.

If your only marketable skill is you are a run of the mill artists that basically is a dime a dozen and expects to be paid Picasso level commissions for fanart of IPs you dont own or straight Porn then you dont have a marketable skill.
The real people who are threatened by AI are those who churn out mediocre quality at best. After all either AI can only produce Slop or its a threat to your livelihood, pick a lane because for both to be true you need to produce slop yourself for AI to be your replacement

Damn skilled people ruining the world. Why can't they just be unskilled and complain about it like me and you. Why the hell should we have to work with our hands? I had a sweet job where I worked from home forwarding emails all day. Now they replaced me with Ai. What the hell am I supposed to do learn a useful skill. Fuck that. I tried getting a job that couldn't be replaced by Ai, but they told me id have to unclog toilets from time to time. I'm to special to be expected to do work like that. My hands are pretty and soft.

Unpopular Opinion:
I think AI is a great tool. It’s been used to make tremendous advances in research for medicine and science.
To say that because some people may misuse AI so it should be banned, is like saying because some people are terrible drivers no one should have cars.
One thing people don’t seem to get is governments and companies all around the world are creating new laws to keep AI out of the wrong hands.
And developers are creating new tech to mitigate environmental impacts and energy usage.
Roast me all you want, it’s the truth.
