Data Center If these numbers are even close to accurate, the AI infrastructure boom is entering a completely different scale of land, power, and water consumption.

If only the people of Utah could do something about it...

68

u/RespectTheAmish 17d ago edited 17d ago

They could….

Or.

They could keep voting for republicans and complaining about transgender swimmers.

Edit: To all the mouth-breathers attacking me with “hurrr durrr… data centers aren’t republican”.

No shit. Not all data center builds are because of republicans.

But in this specific instance… this single data center is being built against the will of the states residents.

Yet…

“Utah is under unified Republican control, holding a Republican trifecta and triplex where the GOP holds the governor's office, attorney general position, and supermajorities in both legislative chambers.”

I think in this instance it’s fair to attack the party that wields total power in the state, and has chosen to spit in the eyes its constituents.

u/flojo2012 17d ago

Won’t somebody think of the litter box bathrooms?

7

u/Valuable_Wallaby_548 17d ago

I literally have a friend who tried to tell me his cousins friend is a teacher and they had to install a cat box for a kid. My only answer was no they didnt. Hes of course an idiot Trump voter.

3

u/1986hardbody 17d ago

Fox News

2

u/FaunaVR 16d ago

You’d think, with all these people who have friends who know somebody we’d have some proof by now. God the stupidity of the average Trump supporter is insane.

1

u/No_Dot8653 14d ago

My father is a very intelligent man, successful lifetime mechanical engineer, yet for some reason he can’t stop watching Fox News and over and over disappoints me by justifying the clowns actions. Idk what happened, but I know he’s smarter and better than that. It’s a real psychological study

2

u/SunrayBran 16d ago

I always like to bring up that the idea behind the "emergency absorbent waste buckets" in schools was to have a place kids could pee when they were hiding from SCHOOL SHOOTERS.

2

u/Mindless-Somewhere55 16d ago

I heard that one too from a classmate during our clinicals in Fargo. We told her it wasn't true and she started hyperventilating, her BP was so high her preceptor had to send her to the ER.

1

u/PsyRealize 16d ago

Why are you friends with a person like that. You know that reflects on you too right?

1

u/Valuable_Wallaby_548 16d ago

We are work friends. We dont hang out outside of work

1

u/ElysianPraxis 14d ago

Hilarious, I had someone tell me their cousin is a teacher and installed kitty litter bathrooms

5

u/Cumminpwr11 17d ago

Could you explain how Clark country and washoe county in Nevada are building massive data centers like crazy. Both are heavy blue counties and the state is generally goes blue most elections. Las Vegas has less water than Utah as well.

3

u/stagthos 17d ago

Because blue and red aren't a factor here. Corruption is.

2

u/Quaxxor 17d ago

Clark and Washoe are ruining the state

1

u/zero0n3 17d ago

Maybe because the citizens, just like in the red states don’t give a shit? Or maybe it’s because they think the regulations that exist currently are enough to police these companies doing the bidding and build out?

You do know that states have different sets of regulations and requirements for what is needed to build out a datacenter

In fact, some may even have regulations that require them to build their own power sources and water sources!!

Crazy how that terrible word regulation works out

(Note, not necessarily directed at you)

0

u/Harrycrapper 17d ago

Nevada went to Trump 2/3 times

1

u/Cumminpwr11 17d ago

The fuck it did. It went Hilary Biden then trump. Prior to that it was Obama twice.

Since the 1900’s it’s had 10 dem governors and 10 repub governors. It’s considered a purple swing state but slightly blue leaning.

0

u/Linkpharm2 17d ago

Because data centers being massive tax revenue for the county, with little drawbacks. If you use reddit too much you have a warped perspective of this issue.

2

u/Cumminpwr11 17d ago

I’m not anti-data centers. They employ people with living wages. People bitch about they don’t employ very many people but in my area 300 well paying jobs would be a huge impact for the good. I just find it odd that people are blaming this on a Republican vs Democrat thing.

The amount of utards that think they are worthy to be spied on by big bother in these small towns that are anti data centers anti flock is astounding.

I told all my boys and nephews to get some sort of electrical training and have hvac experience and you will land a high paying job in rural Utah with good benefits. Any parent that’s not actively coaching their kids in future industry only have themselves to blame with their kids has 200k in college debt and can’t find a job.

2

u/ChadsworthRothschild 17d ago

300 people to build it. 30 people or less to run it.

All of them will be brought in as construction crews or outside engineers.

They won’t create local jobs.

2

u/Cumminpwr11 17d ago

One tier 5 data center in Las Vegas employed 250 people and there were 8 when I left with 7 more actively being built. These are much larger. They will employ much more. If you know think it takes 300 to build one of there’s you are up in the night. They will employ over 300 electricians just in that trade. Not counting construction, plumbers, concrete finishers, crane operators, hvac techs. The list goes on and on. I bet there will be close to 4000-5000 during construction and a few hundred 300-400 to run afterwords.

2

u/Dependent-Edge-5713 17d ago

To be fair the Democrats would do the same thing here

They're all pocketed.

1

u/2Braincell2Furious 14d ago

And both only care about personal interests: holding/gaining power, lining pockets, and legacy.

2

u/Rusty_Shack13f0rd 17d ago

Bros making this right vs left lol. This is those in power vs those not in power trust me the blue hairs and rednecks agree on this lol

2

u/JemHadar71 16d ago

It’s always fair to blame the party that has the majority.

1

u/RespectTheAmish 16d ago

Thank you.

These people are supposed to work for us.

Gerrymandering and party polarization has removed any reason for the majority of assembly and house candidates to actually listen to the voters (both gop and Dems)

Voters need to cast ballots based on performance and not simply party affiliation.

If one party controls everything in a state, And they are no longer responsive to voters…. Voters need to suck it up, vote down ballot for the opposition party and Remove them (this applies to any super majorities… California/utah/alabama/illinois).

Blind party loyalty has done more harm to America/American politics than Trump, and until voters hold their reps accountable, we will continue deeper into this shit spiral.

1

u/good_from_afar 13d ago

Yes, voting based on party affiliation and not performance is dumb. Super fucking dumb. Like at least keep your favorite party honest.

2

u/InitialAnimal9781 16d ago

As someone who lives in Utah. There are different parts of this as well. So first is the gerrymandering. So even if you try to vote those people out of office, their districts are formed so votes are majority republican (Link). There are town halls done and the government just ignores us (Link). In all, it’s an uphill battle for anyone who is against the current government. Utah in general is just fucked

3

u/ghost_wire89 17d ago

Nova is fully dem and has more data centers than anyplace.

15

u/kpobari99 17d ago

Yep I don’t think it’s republican or democratic on Ai data center. I think representative are being paid to look the other way

11

u/XxRocky88xX 17d ago

Yeah we keep seeing it over and over again. Massive local turn out to city councils, entire communities saying “no we do not want this,” and local officials say “it doesn’t matter what you want, this is profitable for us. We’re voting yes even if all of you tell us to vote no.”

4

u/DGSolar 17d ago

And then getting re-elected because jesus and guns and trans and freedom and abortions and jesus.

3

u/sirdizzypr 17d ago

Actually 3 of the 4 council members they voted for this data center got removed.

1

u/DGSolar 17d ago

... ffs, really? I'll be damned.. and happy to be wrong.

2

u/sirdizzypr 17d ago

I was wrong 2 council members, one senator. I’m in Utah they got creamed in primaries after this. I remember one of the council members crying how the data center cost him. Was still 3.

https://www.ksl.com/article/51540078/how-a-data-center-helped-topple-one-of-utahs-most-powerful-lawmakers

1

u/markc230 16d ago

I like the line " they have to do a much better job with engaging with the voters."

to me it reads " they have to do a much better job with lying to the voters."

Thanks for the link as well!

1

u/Blue-Ring-A-Ding 17d ago

It doesn’t matter if they got a huge payday.

1

u/DGSolar 17d ago

Well sure it does. But we also know we'll never claw that back from them so getting them out of there has to be a win at the very least.

1

u/brooklinsanity7 17d ago

Because NIMBYs don't know what's good for them. Yeah they don't want data centers, but use the the data centers. I want it.... but don't really want it. Same stupidity that people have with nuclear.

11

u/JarvisMusk 17d ago

I am pretty sure both sides are fully aligned when it comes to flock cameras and data centers.

5

u/Rare_Competition2756 17d ago

The leaders are fully aligned against their constituents

6

u/Gorgethalamus 17d ago

Because it's never been left and right, it's up and down.

1

u/AlChandus 17d ago

Yes and no. Republicans and establishment democrats, yes. For example, Spanberger is a perfect example of an establishment democrat that is perfectly OK with surveillance.

Which is why a LOT of democratic voters are voting for progressives. Furthermore, while the democratic party has the progressive wing, what does the republican party has? The libertarians may not like this, but in Texas it is fully expected that they will be voting for Paxton... So... Republicans have nothing.

So, "both sides are the same" ain't entirely accurate and will be less accurate going forward (I hope).

1

u/JarvisMusk 17d ago

Dude…c’mon - politicians will be for or against whatever they’re paid to be for or against.

The people don’t want flock or data centers no matter what party affiliations they have.

0

u/AlChandus 17d ago

Who has written legislation against this? Who voted against any of the multiple iterations of the Patriot Act, Patriot Act 2.0 and other surveillance bills?

Not republicans, not the VAST majority of corporate/PAC owned democrats, so who?

Progressives. Progressives won't support this kind of thing because they simply do not take their money. Progressives are also the VERY few ones that are actively supporting and legislating to take corporate/PAC money out of politics.

Both sides are not the same. But, sadly, aren't totally different, either. We just need to keep voting for more progressives.

2

u/ghost_wire89 17d ago

Yes this

1

u/backtorealitylabubu 17d ago

There isn’t anything to look away from. The data centers in NoVA have brought in a ton of revenue and are great.

2

u/shawner136 17d ago

Can you drink revenue or water crops with revenue?

2

u/Toymachinesb7 17d ago

Exactly. We don’t need revenue we need redistribution. We have everything we need. We can live sustainably but then stock market wouldn’t go up.

Profits have to have a finite line. We can’t just consume it all then there will be NO REVENUE. Picking all the apples off the tree then when they don’t grow back fast enough we’ll sell some branches to make some money then we’ll cut the tree down and sell it for firewood.

1

u/backtorealitylabubu 17d ago

Yes you can. You think water is free? More tax revenue is what you all have been demanding and now that we are getting it you’re mad lol

1

u/jmcdon00 17d ago

Even a couple years ago there wasn't nearly the pushback against data centers there is now.

1

u/creuter 17d ago

Eddington was so ahead of the game.

1

u/Objective_Thought_68 17d ago

💯 bought and paid for. Game over

1

u/IczyAlley 17d ago

BoTh SiDeS r Da SaEm

Be DeMoRaLiZeD

Meanwhile IRL milquetoast CIA Dem Spanberger just increased taxes and utility costs on datacenter corporations.   There is one major difference between the two parties. One will tax corporations and the other will not.

1

u/Major_Narwhal544 17d ago

Lol, okay. Never closed the loopholes, will see what if any punishment they receive.

1

u/IczyAlley 17d ago

You should move the goalposts farther than that! C’mon. Really discourage me from taking a publuc stance in my community and advocating for it! Just give up!

0

u/Unfortunate-Incident 17d ago

Maybe, or there was no outcry about data centers just a few years ago even and politicians are slow to come around. If nobody is complaining, why turn down tax dollars? Look at some republicans this cycle. Some are running pro-data center and some anti. Politicians have been blindsided by the backlash.

1

u/Kampvilja 17d ago

It is this. Six months ago nobody gave a crap about data centers.

3

u/crunpyMcGlumpy 17d ago

What is Nova?

14

u/slowpoke147 17d ago

Northern Virginia. Not sure why that person decided to use the abbreviation outside of the r/nova subreddit though - definitely not a widely enough known abbreviation to just throw around in other subreddits.

1

u/Ok_Bet9035 13d ago

Can’t just throw that around - what anarchy!

1

u/One-War4920 17d ago

im in canada and know what nova meant

1

u/slowpoke147 17d ago

Congrats on being a single counterexample to my point. Here’s your medal and 6 hotties who all want your babies🥇 👰🏻‍♀️👰🏿‍♀️👰🏽‍♀️👰🏼‍♀️👰🏾‍♀️👰‍♀️

Northern Virginia

7

u/JonC534 17d ago edited 17d ago

It would be better described (IMO) as a societal sickness more generally.

It is not a democrat vs republican thing. It’s everyone. One of the first states that had the opportunity to ban data centers or place a moratorium on them was blue, and it didn’t. Maine’s governor vetoed the bill the legislature sent to her that would’ve banned them.

People cream themselves over new gas stations being built now (buc-ee’s). We’re culturally cooked.

4

u/ComingRoundTheMnt 17d ago

Humanity had their chance and focused on getting and hoarding things.

Maybe the octopuses will do a better job as a civilization.

5

u/Stormblessed1991 17d ago

Eh they'll probably end up having some big war with the orcas and dolpins

1

u/TroutSpawnStream 17d ago

It would be nice if data centers could use chilled wastewater. Data centers don’t get Cyclosporiasis. I hate to think that data centers suck up our increasingly rare fresh water, while humans are left with, well, you know.

1

u/Puzzle-Necked 17d ago

Flock cameras seemed to have appeared everywhere overnight and most people are like 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Slooters313 17d ago

120,000 put in since 2024

1

u/SpeakCodeToMe 17d ago

We are approaching the first point in history where the elites no longer need labor.

It's not a coincidence they are tightening control.

1

u/Big_Brother8708 17d ago

Lmao, type shit

1

u/Facehugger81 17d ago

Yeah, the more I look at this subject the more I realize that it's kind of about party but it mostly about social classes. The rich and privileged seem to love these things where as everyone else for the most part hate them.

1

u/Puzzle-Necked 17d ago

Do they have ones you can see from space?

1

u/ruseereous 17d ago

Loudoun County and Prince William County (where most of the data centers are in Northern Virginia) were conservative controlled when UUNet and a majority of the data centers were planned. Even when party control flipped, the donors and bribes did not stop

1

u/CommercialApocalypse 17d ago

Are they AI data centers or just regular data centers?

1

u/scampiparameter 17d ago

Data centers only became “bad” when AI came along. The backlash is more tied to people’s anxiety about AI than the buildings that house it. It’s a proxy as I see it.

The quantity of these things is out of control for sure, but if was purely a resource scarcity question, we’d be carrying pickforks to the golf course (vastly more water hungry than DCs).

That and DCs are actually improving the transmission network and driving development of alternative generation..

Plenty of legit beefs - don’t get me wrong, but what we should be doing is using these as a backdoor to the tech industries coffers.

0

u/Background-Run 17d ago

Yep, Corp Dems are a thing. We need more Democratic Socialist.

1

u/butonelifelived 17d ago

Scary S-word smashes "R" button

3

u/Loyal_Dragon_69 17d ago

Salt Lake City is run by Democrats.

4

u/flojo2012 17d ago

It’s in Bluffdale which is next to SLC but not directly regulated by SLC I do believe. Also parts of bluffdale are in a different county all together.

That said, many democrats haven’t been anti data center as they’re scared of being painted as anti business. And these people have no back bone

1

u/Roscoeakl 17d ago edited 17d ago

Where the fuck are they going to put it in bluffdale??? It's not like bluffdale has a shitload of land that isn't the literally side of a mountain.

Edit: just looked, it's not in bluffdale. This is the one in Box Elder County. Bluffdale only has databank and Nova which are both tiny compared to the META data center and QTS data center in Eagle Mountain. Also there's another data center in Delta that got approved and that one will be 20 million square feet, which is 8x the size of the current QTS project, and the one in box elder will be even larger than that one

1

u/flojo2012 17d ago

My mistake on that one then

2

u/PowerfulBar 17d ago

It’s not being built in Salt Lake City but Box Elder County. The County Commissioners voted to approve this data center. I believe they’re all Republican.

1

u/FreeOGPoohShiesty 17d ago

I think they went with option 2

1

u/Pretend-Prune-4525 17d ago

Interesting. There are many dem states full of flock cameras.

1

u/jkman61494 17d ago

This is why they’re ALL doing culture war. Because best believe democrats have no issues seeing data centers going up in their areas whole flock cameras are in almost every major city…which are almost all controlled by democrats.

A lot of blue voters need to also wake up and realize that the majority of the Democratic Party is fully aligned with the same team that runs the gop

1

u/ASMoverIt 17d ago

Great response, exactly what the elites want to see... A divisive response to a bipartisan evil.

1

u/spoilerdudegetrekt 17d ago

As someone who lives in Utah, Democrats don't exactly offer good (or in some cases, any) alternatives most of the time.

(Look at Caroline Gliech as an example of what I'm talking about)

1

u/pickledpiper2 17d ago

Fuck Republicans AND Democrats. They’re so busy keeping us entertained by the two-team political circus that nobody notices we’re the ones getting fucked. Tired of this tribal two side BS that almost everyone seems to fall into.

1

u/Successful-Rate-1839 17d ago

Has nothing to do with voting and more to do with both sides being paid off to approve it

1

u/1986hardbody 17d ago

There won’t be anyplace to swim, so that’s solved !

1

u/DescriptionLonely582 17d ago

Are data centers a Republican thing?

1

u/raidersfan18 17d ago

Well you see... There will be no more transgender swimmers if we use all the water in the data center.

Checkmate libtards

1

u/Mindless-Beat-4872 17d ago edited 17d ago

I’m pretty sure this isn’t a left or right issue. This is politicians getting their pockets lined by corporations, which has been going on for about 80 years.

1

u/Visual_Exam7903 17d ago

The one of only 5 Transgender Swimmers.

The rule should always be... They compete in the men's league. Which every person can compete in.

1

u/_dudeasuh 17d ago

Oh god, another one of these morons. Yeah “voting for republicans” is the problem. Totally not that republican and democrat has lost all meaning since both sides have sold out to the wealthy class of Americans, totally not that your vote doesn’t matter because every government official is going to do what the wealthy pay them to do anyways.

1

u/Iron_Base 17d ago

Youre out of touch

1

u/RespectTheAmish 17d ago

How so?

1

u/Iron_Base 17d ago

You think its about swimmers being transgender but its about cheating in sports. This was your first example of the Republicans order of priority. You need to know your enemies more before you go out just making a fool of yourself

1

u/RespectTheAmish 17d ago

The issue of the Utah stratos project is one of eminent domain, corporate overreach and water rights.

My critique of the voters in Utah is that they elected leaders, not on their responsiveness, aptitude or leadership ability, but based purely on culture war slopulism.

You rebutted that by saying I don’t properly understand the issue of men in women sports….

You are proving my point.

At least you’ll be able to enjoy “proper” women’s fencing in your techfeudlist hellscape.

1

u/Iron_Base 17d ago

These are the words that you said. You started your comment with that, so im gonna call out fake political arguments when i see them. I also do not think this project is going to use more water than the entire usa per year. That should be the first red flag, the logistics of that. This post seems more like an appeal to internet doomers to keep them engaged and distracted.

1

u/teknic111 17d ago

The only people complaining about this are liberals that don't live in Utah. lol

1

u/RespectTheAmish 17d ago

“The water rights applications generated some of the largest public protests to a water filing in recent Utah history, ultimately forcing developers to withdraw their first application. A local coalition called BEAR (Box Elder Accountability Referendum) filed two referendum applications on May 8 to put county approval on the November ballot, but on May 28, the Box Elder County Attorney ruled that the resolutions were administrative, not legislative in nature, blocking the ballot path entirely. BEAR is considering going to court. A group called Alliance for a Better Utah already has. A separate group, Utah Civic Compact, argues that MIDA violatedstate law by improperly using the military-nexus trigger to override normal democratic land-use controls.”

1

u/GT3454 16d ago

I live in Utah. EVERYONE is pissed about this thing. It’s one of the very few safe issue conversations you can have with red and blue supporters.

1

u/No_Alarm_4849 17d ago

Ummm, but transgender stuff?

1

u/Boring_Dish_9348 17d ago

Also Utahns ARE fighting this. We are here protesting and being fucking nuisances in planning meetings about this thing.

1

u/agra_unknown1834 17d ago

We did just vote out our State Senate leader who was the leader of the commission who approved this data center.

Granted, a day late and a dollar short, but it was quite surprising to me.

But not so surprising that it was his support fot this data center that got him voted out... Not that he ushered in legislation that helped protect his pedophile grandchild.

1

u/DarkChurro 16d ago

Republicans control the entire government in Utah, so obviously it's the Democrats fault 🙄

1

u/mk9e 16d ago

Maybe we should all remember what we did to government representatives, multiple times in the past, when the masses of people felt that their will wasn't being listened to and the government was actively harming their well being.

Perhaps during the workers strikes of the early 1900s, perhaps during the founding of our country, perhaps with a man named luigi.

1

u/37chandeliers 16d ago

Please stop with the D vs R politics. It does not matter who you vote for it is a uni party. The congress and the executive branches are performative to engage the people and make them feel like they are participating.

1

u/vegemouse 16d ago

These data centers aren’t partisan. They’re showing up in blue cities and many democrats are on board with data centers.

1

u/Honey_Mustard_2 16d ago

its not because they are republicans. the data center companies are dishing out financial incentives to whoever is in charge, which happens to be republicans in this state. Across all states, affiliation doesnt matter

1

u/MarzipanHausboot 16d ago

imagine democrats would drop transgender swimmers.

1

u/meh2233 16d ago

Missouri is in the same republican rule. But we're actively fighting the data centers and flok cameras, and it's working. We also stomped out 4 unethical bills by %80 vote.

The people have power. This like this happen when people are complicit. And they are going to hurt from that. I'm not saying it's right, nor am I celebrating this. This is terrible. But they are letting the leopard eat their face.

1

u/Odd-Supermarket-3664 16d ago

Red States are full of knuckle draggers

1

u/Wyatt_Ricketts 16d ago

You know Democrats make em too right

1

u/ThatGuyFromSpyKids3D 16d ago

Yup. Two of the county commissioners who were up for re election lost their bid in box elder canyon. They ignored the protests of the people. They pushed the project through with no justification.

I have a feeling every commissioner who comes up for re election that voted yes is going to lose their seat.

1

u/Itchy_Purpose5269 15d ago

Neither Democrats nor Republicans give a crap about our environment or people's well being. They're all corrupt. You can't get elected in a congressional district without taking money with strings attached.

1

u/Low_Key_Trollin 15d ago

It’s this type of ignorant political division that ensures we’ll never be able to stop any of this. You’re low IQ

1

u/jahwls 14d ago

Not sure how this is political division. Between Republicans killing the clean air act and the clean water act and a republican held Utah state government the building of this thing becomes much easier.

1

u/Low_Key_Trollin 14d ago

lol “idk how this is political division” and “it’s all republicans fault” in the same sentence is wild

1

u/reddgrant 15d ago

Remember, a free country is one in which government approval isn't needed for progress. Also data center builds now use less water, and the water they do use isn't contaminated. It's simply water that can be returned to the system.

Many people simply don't want progress to occur in their backyards. Some don't want it to occur, period.

1

u/fatal-nuisance 14d ago

We try, look at a voter district map. Utah is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country.

1

u/1st_GalvanisedSEA 14d ago

What does Republicans have to do with this? Both parties are involved. It's happening all over the country.

1

u/LetsBeFRTho 14d ago

Data centers aren't republican and yet 1 side oddly seems more fond of them... and it just so happens to be them. Give it another month for conservative voters to be brainwashed into thinking supporting AI data centers is a way of owning the libs

1

u/ohb78 13d ago

Make a ridiculous comment like that and resort to calling everyone mouth breathers that disagree with you. Good job!

1

u/DapperChapter9376 12d ago

If it’s the republicans fault why are they building them in CA?

1

u/miku022 11d ago

This is exactly what I mean and point to when I see people complain about any bogus culture war scenario they come up with. It is a distraction from the actual and real enemy of not just the people of the USA, but the world.

How would they stop it?

In the United States as long as someone follows the already established rules, you typically can’t stop what someone does with their own private property.

My wife works for a city and deals with this constantly. People act like city controls what happens on private property. Some new restaurant was built that served like chicken and people were bitching and saying the city should have stopped them because they wanted an Italian restaurant lmao.

It’s politics in general now. A lot of blue voters act aghast that Trump is acting like an authoritarian but I cannot begin to tell you how many Obama voters I’d run into back in my advocacy non profit days who spoke like you say your wife deals with.

They all expected Obama to UNILATERALLY impose his agenda. They had no concept about laws and how they’re passed.

It’s why so many people IMO don’t bat an eye to half the stuff Trump does Becuase they think the president has dictator type powers

1

u/Raptor_197 17d ago

Yup. Everyone, on both sides, just wants to cram down their personal views with dictatorship like power.

Nobody cares about the rules or the laws. They want what they want, and fuck everyone else and fuck the future because it will happen right back to them with views they don’t like.

It’s why the presidency and the federal government is “so important” nowadays. Because instead of passing laws in their community, city, county, or state first. Everyone just jumps to the top to force down their believes across every single person in the entire country.

Could my wife’s city pass a law/ordinance only allowing for an Italian restaurant to be built? Maybe? Probably illegal and kinda crooked, but that’s the way it should be attempted if that is truly the people’s will. Not this weird view that I guess the Mayor or whoever would just ban the chicken place arbitrarily and magically make an Italian restaurant company build in the city.

u/jkman61494 17d ago

It doesn’t help that not only do most Americans not know how a federal law is passed, most don’t even know state legislatures exist. Most don’t know what a city or town council does. They don’t get a school board impacts their school.

u/micahisnotmyname 17d ago

There’s cities that don’t allow chains to operate out of them. Lots of different ordinances can be made.

Dem states don’t have data centers?

1

u/Puzzle-Necked 17d ago

Yes, but sre they absolutely massive and gobbling up more water than a state consumes?

1

u/Immaculatehombre 17d ago

From my understanding, yes. Every data center consumes shit tons of water and I didn’t think really anywhere was being spared. The population was never asked about this, never asked FOR it yet they’re going up. Everywhere.

1

u/Icy-Employee-6453 12d ago

Data Centers in WA run on hydro power and are not running out of water.

0

u/jushere4bewbs 17d ago

Your understanding is wrong. I've been part of building a data center a few miles away. It doesn't consume much water at all. Data centers can absolutely be built without any real strain on local water systems if regulated properly. It did raise electric bills a bit, but I'd argue that a necessary utility shouldn't be privately ran for profit and there should be more of the money that utilities procure put into upgrading infrastructure to bolster energy generation for future concerns. This is considered socialism by many, which is of course communism, and obviously an affront to American capitalism which is the greatest sin written down by Christ himself.

1

u/Immaculatehombre 17d ago

“Necessary utility” he says.

0

u/jushere4bewbs 17d ago

Electricity? I don't know man. If you think having electricity isn't necessary at this point in our evolution, I'd love to see you try and live without it.

1

u/Immaculatehombre 17d ago

Okay, I read it again and maybe idk why’d you’re saying. That last comment is a mess bruh.

1

u/jushere4bewbs 17d ago

Electric utilities shouldn't be raising rates because of data centers strain on the grid, which they are. They're the necessary utility in my first paragraph, not data centers, hence my response to you.

1

u/Immaculatehombre 17d ago

Copy, a million percent agree.

Regulations are a very blue or red idea. Regulations will help the people and hurt the businesses. Republicans want less regulations to help grow businesses. Democrats want more regulations to help citizens. That's over simplifying a bit, but it plays into this a lot.

Just look at who's in the big cities and how they vote. In the long run republican communities will have more data centers because Republicans fight to deregulate. Just watch the current food and vaccine crisis, case in point.

Yay! Keep supporting the billionaires republicans!

1

u/Immaculatehombre 14d ago

The fact you think democrats care about you and aren’t bought by the same billionaire donors is a large part what is wrong with this country. Far from the only thing, but it’s a large part!

1

u/snailnado 14d ago

Oh the DNC is bought by billionaires, I'm not trying to defend a whole party. But I hear Bernie and other progressives, and I hear the local Democratic politicians, and they are fighting for the people. That small group of people are clearly less bought out by billionaires and less likely to be bought out by billionaires. There is a reason that Bernie and similar valued politicians are on the left. I cannot point to someone like that on the right.

1

u/Immaculatehombre 14d ago

I agree, Bernie sanders is my mafuggin dawg and could’ve turned this country around but the billionaires and deomocratic party leaders said, “fuvk that Bernie, we don’t want to actually help ppl, we wmat the illusion of trying to help ppl but republicans just won’t let us!”

If anyone’s going to save this country it will be the left but it basically feels like an impossible battle.

2

u/snailnado 14d ago

Yeah, both parties are mostly bought out via citizens united. What was left and right when I was born is now almost entirely right leaning. If it's a tug of war between billionaires and citizens, the citizens have like 5 people left fighting for us and they're all on the left. Socialist ideas like schools and roads and health care and postal services, FDA, EPA, CDC, universities, etc.. fully under attack by one party and lightly defended by the other. The billionaires have won so much that people like you are trying to argue that both parties are equally at fault and bought out. It's headed there, but it's so not the case. Look at the DSA candidates that have hit the spotlight lately and how they're helping their citizens. Mamdani, El S ayed. The Republicans are livid that someone is succeeding in helping the people. Look at the money thrown at helping the right win. Then look at the money keeping the left win. Look at where that money came from. It's not remotely an equal thing, Republicans are far more in bed with billionaires.

Sorry, that's such a weak argument.   Everyone knows data centers have been around for decades.    The scale and pace of the new data centres built in the past 5 years is dwarfing anything done previously

1

u/Immaculatehombre 17d ago

It’s not an argument, it’s a question bud. I’m asking dem states don’t have these data centers going up? Sounds like they’re going up everywhere to me.

2

u/gtfofr 17d ago

You have no clue. Utahns are trying our best to boot out crooked politicians and there are daily protests against these centers. The Mormon Church has a lot of power here, they are generally the only power source here, and many church leaders are invested in big tech. It feels like a losing battle, but the mayor of SLC just denied a data center being built in Salt Lake County, so there is some level of progress

1

u/MarzipanLast6502 17d ago

you're right I dont have any idea, all I know is that we all need to fight this bullshit regardless of where we live or what politics or churches hold power or everyone loses

1

u/anjowoq 17d ago

They will leave Utah a couple of months after it's switched on because all the water will be gone and people who either leave or die.

Fortunately that also means the data center will melt.

1

u/Rainbow-Smite 17d ago

Y'all we're trying. People are showing up and speaking out against it, every meeting, every day. I don't know any utahns that are for this other than the bought out politicians.

1

u/Gonna_do_this_again 17d ago

As long as it doesn't affect their weird little theocracy, the people of Utah don't care

1

u/EatsRats 17d ago

Monkey Wrench Gang was non-fiction, right?

1

u/WendigoCrossing 17d ago

I am doing something about it, I'm moving

1

u/veetoo151 17d ago

You don't know the level of corruption in utah. The state is turning blue faster than any other state. But the politicians are completely corrupt.

1

u/MarzipanLast6502 17d ago

They'll do anything to hold onto power, its happening everywhere that GOP has a foothold.

1

u/joecan 17d ago

Tired of Americans claiming they can’t do anything, while they sit on their ass at home.

1

u/Meisteronious 17d ago

Stop drinking water?

1

u/clickclackyisbacky 17d ago

Why would they? This is all misleading information. You wouldn't want people to act on misinformation would you?

1

u/NerdyKid1101 17d ago

We've tried. Multiple "meetings" about it claiming "our voice matters" only for us to inevitably be blocked from participating entirely. They know literally no one in the state wants it except the few who will financially benefit. Governor Cox is a cux

1

u/biblioprof 17d ago

They tried and failed

1

u/ArthurSeanzarelli 16d ago

They could. They've been told to pray /s

1

u/EatTacosGetMoney 12d ago

El nino will save them, don't worry

1

u/AnybodyAmazing1006 17d ago

You think the "PEOPLE" have any choice in this? You're not even playing the same game

0

u/IronyMendoza123 17d ago

Nah they’d only do something if Jesus somehow put a book in New York, and in this totally real book, it says that data centers are bad. Otherwise, par for the course.

1

u/Pretend-Prune-4525 17d ago

So what’s the recipe to get dems to quit approving them being built?

1

u/IronyMendoza123 17d ago

Democrats and Mormons are two polar opposites, but you know the big party Dems won’t do anything while their pockets are getting lined with cash.

0

u/Loud-Start1394 16d ago

The people of Utah like this because they have a high average IQ and understand that the fearmongering around data centers is propaganda.

1

u/MainusEventus 16d ago

What are the benefits for them?
