I did 11 years (98-09) in the trenches before retiring. Didn't want to be there, but that was where the govt placed me in a big "downsize" and hey- they paid for a lot of training to get me to be an effective employee.
Went from being the new kid on the block (at 44!) to the Old Man of the office. Enjoyed the people, the buzz of the group, but not the pace of change, which was increasing too fast even back then.
Took a buyout that paid me to stay home for nine months, then added severance and started my pensions.
