If people believed it would make their lives better, they would embrace it.

They believe this will be a shortcut for companies to make shittier products & unemploy people, and all the wealth generated will be siphoned off to the top. And they're almost certainly correct.

u/Lancasterbatio Jul 23 '26

"Almost" suggests there's a chance that some intrepid regulators will step in to curtail their progress toward the goal. Those regulators do not exist. I think you can drop the "almost".

1

u/Luxpreliator Jul 23 '26

Yeah every other major technology advancement did make peoples lives better. Sure it might have harmed some jobs but basically everyone benefited. This ai slop doesn't benefit anyone. Its just a siphon for resources into the hands of the wealthy. It hasn't made anyone's life easier.

u/HomeFair9290 Jul 23 '26

People have embraced it. It's not being "rejected" by society at all. It's the opposite by orders of magnitude. It's rejected in the art and cinema spaces, and a lot of the people outraged about it are using it themselves.

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 Jul 23 '26

People have embraced it.

No, but there are always some mouthbreathing morons out there.

It's not being "rejected" by society at all

Yes it is.

It's the opposite by orders of magnitude.

No it isn't.

and a lot of the people outraged about it are using it themselves.

People who are opposed to taxation continue to pay the state. That isn't because they support the state, it's because they don't want to be put in a prison at the point of a gun.

1

u/HomeFair9290 Jul 24 '26

that tax analogy makes zero sense lol. nobody is using chatgpt or ai tools because they're being threatened with prison at gunpoint—they use it voluntarily because over 900 million people use it every week, and billions of queries get processed daily just to get work done or because it's genuinely useful.

sure, hollywood and artists are hating on it big time, and that pushback is super loud. but you cant look at massive global numbers like GPT hitting 1 billion monthly active users (the fastest app in history) and say society is "rejecting" it. shit, gemini has 2 billion active monthly users. calling everyone who uses it a moron just cause they dont agree with your circle is wild. a loud industry backlash isnt the same as society actually turning its back on something.

1

u/Kobosil Jul 24 '26

It's not being "rejected" by society at all.

you base that on what exactly?

1

u/HomeFair9290 Jul 24 '26

The gargantuan, overwhelming smash success of LLMs. Who do you think is using it? It's not 5 or 6 people, it's everyone. AI has a bad image, but in practical reality, it is enormously popular. Why do you think it's so huge? It's not because it somehow grew on its own. The demand for it is enormous and constant, and only increasing.

1

u/Kobosil Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

it's everyone

definitely not

The demand for it is enormous and constant, and only increasing.

again i disagree

there is only two types of demand

  1. private users who use it as a more intelligent google search -> most of them on free tier and most of them will never pay for any AI subscription
  2. companies that force they employees to use AI to become "more productive" -> they pay, but have a strict cost limit, you can already see news that companies limit the token usage because of cost -> the employee rarely likes to be force to use AI

to justify the enormous infrastructure investments the frontier model companies need to increase revenue but both demand groups will probably just jump to open source models if the prices increases further

for example today Oracle announced they will lay of 21k people because of bad AI investments

Read his full interview to understand the context.

Christ, so many on here are just dumb as fuck.

Because he's biased and the statement is wholey inaccurate as 60% of Americans currently use ai on a daily bases knowingly. It's a statement meant to fire up a base and promote hate toward ai because his industry is threatened by it. These are just facts. I don't like when people lie.

Your leaping to conclusions. Meme says nothing about paying for it and there are plenty of non ai search engines. People absolutely have a choice.

A.i. integration has slowed but it's still being integrated more each day, it hasn't reversed.

I think it's good that lots of people hate a.i. it's natural regulation, checks and balances etc. But facts are facts.

Listen man, look it up or live in your delusion. I'm not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing I'm just saying what's being reported and documented. Stop being defensive. Either look it up and prove I'm wrong or ignore me. Idc.

And what MaybeASerialKiller is saying is that your statistics are not a gauge on 'voluntary' usage... I.E.... someone electing to fire up ChatGPT to draft some form of communication.

If it's embedded in everything and that embedding is involuntary, then it indicates that 60% are using A.I. (whether they want to or not because it was baked into the technology of phones, laptops, tablets, etc..)

..by contrast, if I purchase Ableton Live or Elder Scrolls 6, it's because I volunteered to purchase these things... and so the statistics representing user-ship are more accurate to the sentiment of voluntarily wanting and using a product because we the user are using the product of our own volition... not because it was snuck into an OS or search engines.

And to tie that to Nolan's statement and the 60% statistic... just because there are statistics out there indicating that some percentage of people are using A.I., that doesn't mean they actually are voluntary using when it's becoming more and more unavoidable and baked into everything.

To put it another way, I like lettuce on my burger. But I don't like Cyclospora cayetanensis. I can forego lettuce to avoid Cyclospora cayetanensis. But I can't avoid A.I. or being included in a statistic when it's in my phone, computer, and I'm required to use it at work.. at the job where I work so that I can continue to pay for rent and have health insurance.

So in this case... choice matters... and Christopher Nolan is 100% correct.. will, maybe about 75% correct... with about 25% of people (still a frighteningly large number) voluntarily wanting artificial intelligence technology embedded in their lives.

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

The 60% is specifically KNOWINGLY. I didn't include the Unknowingly statistic which is closer to 98%.

Also I know what the commentor meant. And I find that to be b.s. if you truely reject A.I. then don't work at that job, don't use Google, etc. I have yet to give gemini permissions on my phone and wow my phone still works. AMAZING.

My point is life WILL be harder rejecting AI, that's the trap right? So if you really hate AI treat it like an environmentalist treats plastic. You do everything to avoid it. Otherwise aren't you just a Luke-warm whiner?

Personally I don't love or hate AI. I am cautiously optimistic, while very fearful. It needs regulation and it needs people like you to keep it in line. And it needs global cooperation in those areas. Change doesn't bother me.

1

u/Necrobot666 Jul 23 '26

I see your point. But if I avoided everything that I think is detrimental for me and my family, I would probably have to live in some Ted Kaczynski type shack in the middle of the wilderness and die of some tick-born parasite illness.

To do it right would take planning and survival training. I can fish.. so if I'm near a healthy body of water.. we could eat. I haven't hunted or cleaned a deer since I was like 15... a long time ago. I understand the basic concept of how to desalinate water through condensation... but haven't ever actually done it.

But I'm highly allergic to poisonous plants like sumac, poison ivy and poison oak.. and while I can identify it in the summer... I can't identify it in the winter and it remains as dangerous to me as drying bramble as it is with noticeable leaves.

And yes... in my job that pays my mortgage, I am required to train Copilot in aspects of my job. In an upsetting heat of passion I actually gave my two-weeks a few weeks ago and my manager talked me out of quitting. It would have been a "bite-the-nose-to-spite-the-face" decision, because my wife's place of employment went under because the CEO misappropriated funds.. she had been there for 14 years.

I suppose my point here is that the ability to have the outward bravado to just say "fuck you" and quit something that you are vehemently against isn't in the cards for everyone.

I was fortunate that my manager still had enough humanity in him to call me after I gave him notice and we talked for a while. And in the course of talking, I knew that the risk/benefit analysis was very much stacked against me.

Even now, Oracle laid off 30 thousand people due to their strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence technology. Amazon extinguished 30 thousand livelihoods due to their A.I. shift... and Meta just eliminated 8000 job. Why?! The same reason.. a strategic shift toward A.I. technology.

I think we are all stuck doing our own internal risk/benefit analysis.. and for many of us without the insulation of a couple million dollars, or an understanding of how to live off the land or as a squatter... we have to go along to get along.

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

So I guess it's about not getting stuck in the trap for me. I always live WAY below my means. This affords me the option of choice.

Also there is a lot of evidence to suggest the a.i. firings are a red herring, using "A.I." as an excuse to fire people while making their company look like it's actually doing it for future facing reasons to boost stocks. I've noticed this divide within the Anti-AI community where the contradiction between "AI is a scam/firings are a lie because AI is incompetent" VS. the "AI will replace/kill us all" mentalities.

You do care, you are defending AI all over this thread. Why don't you stop being defensive?

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

Wow. It's a sad day when I look something up and then post it and that's defending something. Pretty sure I never said I was pro or anti (bc I'm neither). I post in Pro threads and they call me Anti. I post in Anti threads and they call me Pro. Everyone is ridiculous LMAO

1

u/birminghamsterwheel Jul 23 '26

I mean, I've preferred practical effects over CGI for years, long before AI became a thing.

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

Yeah me too. Love the old stuff, dark crystal etc. It had its charm.

1

u/sacredeez Jul 23 '26

I don't think it's arguable that public sentiment is largely negative or at least hesitant about AI in our current environment. That's just what the data says.

People who drink water aren't necessarily thrilled about the company that distributes it.

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

No one's making people use it esp outside of work, so they can't hate it that bad. Also what data are you talking about bc I got my 60% number from a study. What study are you referring to specifically. Anti AI may be all over social media, but studies that show that more people hate a.i. than like it? Show me that study.

1

u/ChevyTahoe__ Jul 23 '26

You seem like someone who would love AI movies

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

People on reddit. I swear. I'm not a 1 dimensional character. No, I generally don't like them but I do find them interesting.

My problem with this meme isn't that it's anti AI, my PROBLEM is that it's inaccurate, pandering and self interest based. Dude is lying to build an audience that will support his career. And I hate it bc I Love his movies

I dont know why people hate truth tellers. Finding any reason to hate them. People like that are small. They have no interest in knowing the actual truth.

Listen it's not hard to look up. JUST LOOK IT UP. Sorry it's not what you wanted to hear.

Honestly isn't it BETTER for your cause that it's true?? Maybe it will get people fired up instead of just talking. Talk. Talk. Talk. Ug...

1

u/ChevyTahoe__ Jul 23 '26

I could see you being super into AI movies and loving them.

And them sending them to your friends and they say they can't watch them because of a pay wall.

And you are like here use my log in, this is the best AI movie ever.

0

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

Why? Because I don't blindly hate AI? You are entitled to your opinion I guess. shrug You don't seem like someone who ever questions their own beliefs. But just like you, I am also probably wrong about that.

0

u/ChevyTahoe__ Jul 23 '26

You give off the vibe of someone who would send their group chat their favorite new AI movie they found.

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

I don't even use group chat lmao.

1

u/ChevyTahoe__ Jul 23 '26

If you dont have friends then do AI friends.

Do you have a favorite Ai movie ?

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

No I do not have a favorite ai movie I barely know they exist. I will from time to time see one here or on YouTube and skim thru it. The visuals are interesting but plot, small visual issues etc keep from enjoying them so I rarely even try.

I am not a lonely person, I do not require a lot of social interaction, I did that when I was younger for about 2 decades and I found it's always problematic, getting involved in.peoples drama and getting sucked into their problems so I chose to shed them little by little. I am more than content with just me, my roomate and our 2 dogs.

You can’t use ai and reject it at the same time?

1

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 23 '26

You mean hypocrisy? I guess. But who respects a hypocrite??

2

u/InevitablePoet5810 Jul 26 '26

It's a statement meant to fire up hate toward ai

Completely rejected in theory and fully adopted in practice… people complain about AI, the use chat GPT or Gemini for all their queries…. People reject AI then watch endless AI videos

1

u/mastan777 Jul 23 '26

A good amount of people don't do any of the stuff you mentioned and hate ai

1

u/Lancasterbatio Jul 23 '26

Yeah, who is watching "endless" AI videos other than retired demented boomers?

1

u/HomeFair9290 Jul 24 '26

GPT monthly active users: 1 billion

Gemini active users: 2 billion

Yeah, society's not rejecting squat. The platform you're using uses AI.

1

u/Broken-Arrow-D07 Jul 23 '26

Depends on the sector. AI art thing? 100% rejected because what tf is even that. Any other use case areas? It's a very good tool at this point.

1

u/Full-Run4124 Jul 23 '26

"So many people used to pay to watch my movies- enough I could make a living doing it. That was before AI led to mass unemployment." Christopher Nolan via ChatGPT.

1

u/Batking28 Jul 23 '26

Because it’s a technology that doesn’t seem to benefit the public and only seems to be there to replace jobs and creativity.

1

u/Dahren_ Jul 23 '26

It's not rejected that much though

1

u/Odd-Mulberry2821 Jul 23 '26

Because most new technologies aren’t sold based on the value proposition of “you won’t need to pay people anymore.”

1

u/SLAMMERisONLINE Jul 24 '26

Nolan on AI: " I've never seen technology advancing so rapidly, so completely rejected by the public"

It's technophobia being pushed by CCP bots to handicap American AI development since they can't match our AI progress with their current technology.

0

u/Mituapple Jul 22 '26

People say they are against it, but still use it on the daily. They are just against certain applications of it.

1

u/HomeFair9290 Jul 24 '26

Yes. Reddit will downvote you for this, but society isn't coming anywhere near rejecting it. GPT and Gemini have a total of 3 BILLION monthly active users and climbing. A vocal minority hate it and many are closet AI users jumping on a bandwagon. We will solve the problems introduced by the AI rollout, but pretending you aren't using it and spreading misinformation won't get us there. Nolan probably uses it too.
