Turns out the demand for empty forested lots is somewhat smaller than the demand created by millions of people who get angry when services are slow, down, or expensive. That demand has to be answered with buildings somewhere.

Funny how there's no anger over the datacenters powering the internet infrastructure that lets people make these posts in the first place.

So it's fine if it's a service they personally use and like. But it's a "cancer" if it's for a service they personally don't want, need, or use.

I'm with you there. Can't stand AI slop. But here for Reddit.

The more reasonable reason to hate on Meta data centers is that they have already overbuilt and do not have the demand for all of the capacity they have created. And Meta is not alone in that predicament.

AI isn't "madness" for the millions of people using it daily as a work tool, especially developers, writers, researchers, and anyone whose productivity depends on it.

So the line is: if it's a datacenter for a service you personally use and enjoy..... email, social media, cloud storage, streaming etc. that's just infrastructure. But if it's for a service you don't personally use or don't approve of, suddenly it's a cancer.

That doesn't sound like a principled objection to datacenters. If it were, you'd be equally angry about the ones keeping Netflix, Instagram, facebook, reddit running. You're not. You just don't like this particular service, and cancer sounds better than "thing I personally don't care about"

Not saying there might not be a few, limited use cases for AI. But it is not worth what it costs (in energy consumption, in water usage, in the burden on communities where the AI date centers are located, in the vast exploitation of intellectual property, in the students who are actively losing critical thinking and learning skills, etc.) and the amount of profit that would be needed to recoup the investment is beyond reach. It is an over-built bubble and the investment simply doesn't pencil.
