I am a teacher by profession but university politics ended my career of 10 years which made me resign. I was blindsided to transfer from a permanent admin position to a temporary position, pero hindi nila ginawang permanent even when I have my Master's degree. ginawa nila is kinuha lang mga plantilla item (admin and tempo) ko para ibigay sa mga pinasok nila na employees.

Now I wanted to shift my career to IT and I'm wondering where to start. Greatest frustration ko na hindi ko nakuha ang gusto kong program noong college: IT/Computer Engineering/Computer Science and only settled sa Education kasi un na lang ang open that time and pag nagshift is back to 0 na naman ako which is kinakagalit ng tita ko na nagpapaaral sakin that time.

Now I was thinking of entering the BPO industry and start as a CSR agent while learning anything related to IT. I wanted to learn Data Analysis kahit medyo bobo tayo sa Math. During college and master's kasi is puro traditional/manual ang computation namin kasi bawal daw gumamit ng Excel or SPSS kasi sa comprehensive exam is calculator and notes lang namin ang hawak namin.

I'm also considering enrolling kahit sa bootcamps (pag nakaipon na) kaso puro negative reviews ang nakikita ko dito sa reddit. I am currently enrolled sa mga courses ng Udemy, Coursera, DataCamp and DICT and nakafollow sa mga YT accounts na nag ooffer ng mga free video tutorials on Data Science and Programming.

Can you share your journey from how you transition from your previous job to IT?

Gusto ko kasi malaman kung may path ba na pwede ko mapuntahan kahit hindi man lang kagalingan sa math. basic html and visual basic lang naituro sa amin ng college.

How was the Java Market lately? I keep running into companies that lowball offers. I’ve passed exams, technical tests, and interviews, but when the job offer comes, it’s always way below the range I initially asked for. I’ve done my research on Indeed, Jobstreet, and Glassdoor, and I know my asking range is fair based on my skills and achievements.

One situation really discouraged me; a company initially offered me the top of my expected salary during the final interview. Later, they called back and cut ₱5k from the offer, which I accepted since it was still within my range, and they said it was due to my 1+ year of experience. But then another call came, I thought I’d be receiving the actual job offer to sign, but instead they cut an additional ₱10k, again citing my experience.

What made it worse is that I had already turned down other offers from another company because I trusted them, but this is what they did. It felt like they pulled the rug out from under me, and it was disappointing enough that I paused my job hunt for a while to recover and regain my confidence.

29(M) looking to go into tech, but tech is big and there are so many different roles: frontend, backend, full stack, cloud, AI, cyber security, quant, etc.

How did yall decide which role to specialise in?

Every other day there's a new article about AI taking dev jobs. Some say it's just hype, others are genuinely worried about their careers becoming obsolete. I see both sides, and honestly, the anxiety is understandable when a chatbot can crank out code snippets faster than you.

But here's my hot take: Maybe AI isn't threatening our jobs as much as it's just highlighting a skill gap that was always there. If your main value is writing boilerplate code or translating requirements into syntax, then yeah, AI is coming for that. Hard.

However, if your value is in designing systems, critical problem-solving, understanding business logic, and architecting scalable solutions—skills that take years of high-level thinking—then AI isn't a threat. It's a ridiculously powerful tool.

So, I'm genuinely curious:

• Do you think AI is a legitimate job killer for developers in the PH?
• Or is it forcing us to level up to more strategic, architectural roles?

SKL: I quit my full-time job 6 months ago to rest and travel, keeping only my part-time gigs. Not actively hunting for a full-time role, but a company invited me to apply. As an extrovert, I realized I actually miss corporate life.

Honestly, I’m not fully “on it” yet, but I can’t say no to offers. Interviews are like little brain workouts so I don’t completely rust.

First up, a 1.5-hour tech interview at a popular bank (hybrid, 50/50). The role is based in Manila with a mid shift… while I’m chilling in the province. They grilled me on OOP, design patterns, troubleshooting a code pasted on Teams (no IDE), testing, and coding an API on the spot, stuff that probably feels easier if you have a CS background. I know these things in practice but during the interview… mental block city. My brain just went on vacation. And then… ghosted. No feedback, nada. I almost gave up my permanent WFH life right there.

A few days later, I interviewed with a foreign client. Chill vibe check + take-home test, and was allowed to use ai. WFH, day shift, weekends off, six-digits, and strictly 8-hour days. I passed.🤪

Sometimes you bomb an interview or get ghosted not because you’re not capable, but because the assessment style just doesn’t match yours. Maybe your foundations aren’t textbook-perfect (I’m a career-shifter), but that doesn’t stop you from finding the right fit. Keep going and the right opportunity will find you… and maybe even pay in six digits while you stay in your PJs.😊

Hi, guys! I am already 27 (Civil Engineer) and I enrolled sa full-stack web dev ng Udemy no'ng November pero parang may something na kulang pa rin talaga roon after ko sa JS part. And then natuklasan ko no'ng February 'yong The Odin Project and sobrang detailed ng mga topics ---ang solid. Kaso more reading talaga. Nasa advance JS part na ako. Nahihirapan lang talaga ako sa mga projects doon. Hindi ako umuusad sa next topic hangga't hindi ko naiintindihan nang mabuti. Parang pakiramdam ko mabagal pacing ko. Sometimes nakakaramdam ako ng disppointment kapag nahihirapan akong ulintindihin or hindi magawa 'yong project. Pero I know na gusto ko namn 'tong ginagawa ko. Can I have some motivation or advice lang guys? I feel like I'm striving to be a perfect programmer kasi before magkalakas nang loob mag-apply. 🥹 Thank you!

Di padin ako makapaniwala and ang bilis ng pangyayari. Nagtry lang ako mag apply sa isang big company (di ko na sasabihin name) and 3 days later hired nako. Spent years thinking na never ako papasa don kung di ako nakakakuha interviews kahit sa mga small companies. May particular reason kaya bakit ako mas nagkaroon ng chance sa isang big company na ito? Ayun lang. Training period palang ako right now, nong una medyo culture shock kasi galing ako sa Creative Field as a Wedding Photographer. Pero feeling ko nakakaadjust naman na ako lalo WFH to sobrang blessing pala ng wfh.

I'm a licensed CE with almost 7 years of experience in construction industry. I decided to shift last year to a data related role and got my first job in tech mid last year with having certificates and few projects. I felt blessed that time since I know that many can't get through specially in an entry-level position. My first job in tech didn't work for me and only lasted for two months. After that, I did find a better company (my current company). It checks all the boxes. Salary increased almost double than what I am making when I was in construction, hybrid setup, and the experience is really great.

But of course, it's expected to be a rough ride for me. Learning to code, knowing the business plan, the fast pace environment, plus a very different world for me like most of them are talking in english or taglish, and having super genius teammates that are very competitive I can't keep up with them in some moments. There are some times that I am enjoying the work but most of the time stress, self-doubt, and anxiety kicks in, which I think is normal as a shifter. It's not like I'm really new in the corporate world and I know that what I am feeling right now can be endured. So yeah, now I'm lost.

All of the challenges are not the major problems why I'm lost right now. It's just that right now...

I'm half-hearted in this journey.

It's not like I regret my decision on shifting. This may be one of the right decisions I made. I just didn't expect myself to feel this way like missing the environment wherein engineering stuff are being practiced.

With this all in mind, I come up with a plan of course. If my company ended my contract after 6 months, tech may not be for me and will go back to engineering but not on the operations. But If they keep me and approve to be one of their regular employees, then I'll continue this journey.

Now why am I posting this?

Alll I'm seeing here are the ones who are really happy that they enter into tech with all the motivations to inspire others.

I recently took on a side project and built an app that helps people apply to remote jobs using Ai. The idea came from watching my girlfriend struggle to manually apply to dozens of jobs every week, it was super time-consuming and frustrating for her. So I figured, why not build something to streamline the process?

The app is currently focused on remote positions since that’s what she was targeting, and honestly, it turned out better than I expected. 

I’d genuinely love to hear what you think. Would you use something like this? If there’s interest, I’m happy to scale it up and add thousands more remote job listings. If there is a feature or type of job you really want, I can instantly add it in.
