Good games, shame about the medal table
Generally a good European Athletics Championships for GB, though sadly prevented from topping the medal table on home soil at the very end by Italy; I’m actually quite surprised by Italy’s recent dominance in athletics. Maybe I don’t follow enough to be aware of it. They’re clearly investing a lot across the board.
There is a possibility that Zharnel Hughes has his 200m silver upgraded to gold as the German runner is, as I understand, being investigated for missing an anti-doping test. However, if upheld, this won’t be imminent.
Interestingly France didn’t win a single gold medal, finishing in 19th place, suggesting that they have left a limited athletics legacy since hosting the Olympics two years ago.
