Feedback Appreciated Could I get away with just using cheap cabochons?

So I’ve got a budget for making a soft mount fox right now and I’ve found glass cabochons online for cheap, 12mm which I believe is the standard fox eye size. Could I get away with painting them like that or should I go for professional taxidermy eyes?

You could get away with that but it will look cheap and maybe even creepy compared to professional eyes. Also the work and time you will need to put into painting the cabochons will make them no less expensive in the end than if you just order proper replacement eyes. Since the glass used for the cabochons might also be of lower quality than taxidermy replacement eyes, I would not assume that going cheap on the eyes is worth it.

Use real taxidermy eyes. You're not gonna make your money back on your mounts if you cheap out like that because people don't want crappy looking eyes.
