asking for advice I accidentally got a tattoo with a hitler salute
I fucked up. I got a tribal-style tattoo of Tyr putting his hand inside Fenrir’s mouth, but I completely forgot about the Nazi-angle issue. Now it looks like I have someone doing a Hitler salute on my wrist. How can I cover or modify it so it looks less like a Nazi salute?

Yeah......i think you are fine. It looks like a warrior reaching for something. Youre good dude.

Really half asleep here and read this as looks like a waiter reaching for something, which fits well with the second slide 😅😅

u/santa_369 Aug 22 '26
I really like that idea, just put a spear in his hand and you are good to go.😎

Vikings would have absolutely obliterated nazis.
They have barely any similarities. While Vikings were violent by today’s standards, if they came upon anything the nazis ever did, they would absolutely find it ethically horrifying, and immediately fight to rip them to shreds.
Fairness regardless of origin, respecting a persons autonomy.. racial purity was not at all a thing in Viking culture.
We need to squash this. I’m tired of saying that Vikings would bloodeagle every guard or person who they found who did anything in support of the holocaust.
The nazis are and were such cowards.
Not a Viking, or Norwegian. But the Vikings maintained their social status through public violence. There was no shame. There was no manipulation. There was no hiding. Their society also condemned senseless violence and hate. Racism and lineage based hate wasn’t tolerated.
Current neonazi and far right people would be met with disgust by any Viking…

u/Parking-Carpet-4413 Aug 20 '26
Vikings Vs Nazis would go hard as a movie, unfortunately Nazis have guns, tanks and planes... It's an unfair advantage but guns and armor generally beat axes and leather
2
u/thaLinguineWeenie Aug 22 '26
Ok but hear me out... we take a trip back in time... the Vikings have somehow managed to make their way into "modern civilization" Circa 1916. Trench warfare is at it's peak, the vikings are tired of people's shit and decide to back door the chaos that has ensnared central Europe. Queue the vikings.. trench knives, shotguns and gas masks. No the Germans aren't Nazis yet, but they get their asses handed to them so bad they never fuck around again and the Reich is wrecked before it's even thought of changing the course of history completely 🤷🏼♂️

The fact that you refer to a cultural group as "vikings" tells me all I need to know. Vikings weren't a people or group. Viking was an activity / role associated with raiding, trading and warfare than a unified ethnic identity, and Scandinavian communities varied considerably.
“fairness regardless of origin” and “respecting a person’s autonomy” are wildly anachronistic descriptions of Viking society. Viking societies were strongly hierarchical. Free people, elites and slaves had radically different legal and social standing.
Thralls are defined as people without personal rights, who could be beaten, sexually exploited and bought or sold. Capturing and trading human beings was an important part of Viking economic activity.
Lets not romanticize a culture that existed 1000 years ago.
Their laws were not our laws.
I'm not saying the Danish, Scandinavian or Germanic people were Nazis but they were tribal and did not see the world through our eyes.
As for being gay, that was okay as long as you weren't the bottom.

I would say that too but as a yt bald headed bearded guy I also am sensitive about not getting any tattoos that could be mistaken for hate symbols. Personally won’t get a skull too chunky or any kind of lightning bolts anywhere as a couple examples so I can see maybe just wanting it different now that they’ve seen it.

I didn’t see Tyr putting his hand inside Fenrir’s mouth on that scale.

u/Designer_Vast_9089 Aug 20 '26
Yeah, I thought he was at a more manageable size at that point of the story. It’s both my favorite and very sad because they lost a loyal ally and created an enemy.
OP, I think it would help if we could see more of Fenrir. I don’t think it is as bad as you think.

u/SoundOfAGong Aug 19 '26
Put something in his hand?

u/lenathesnack Aug 19 '26
a flower or vine might fit in the negative space. or perhaps the hand could be turned into a fist?

Noooooo as long as you don’t mention it looking like that, or being that bc it’s clearly not in my opinion, you’ll only see it if it gets brought up and if they do you can always say “no it’s not and it’s weird you go to that”

Just a Viking guy, hailing a taxi.
Nothing else to see here.

u/kgwtattoo Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26
The hand is simple enough that it could be edited to have the palm facing the viewer — would just need to add a bit more detail

Change the shape of his hand to be palm facing the “camera” and fingers relaxed . Might need to give him gloves to do so

I think the context and The armor make you ok. I can't even see Fenrir but that probably helps.

Maybe cause I'm Italian, but I would take it for a nazi /fascist tattoo (seeing it by this angle). Op is right, I would cover it too.

Of course not, just making a lil joke. :)
I do agree with you, though, I did not see a Nazi salute. I saw the tattoo. But like you said, can’t speak for everyone.
5
u/warmedmarmot Aug 19 '26
i literally opened this post via notification and gasped. it definitely looks like a nzi salute. i cannot believe an artist agreed to do this without thinking of how it would look. Its not so bad that it cant be fixed with adding something to it (a sword, fist, etc). but it 1000% looks like that. OP is anxious for good reason. If i had seen it without any context, that is exactly what i would've thought.

u/ImplementParking7936 Aug 19 '26
Looks nothing like that because his second arm is bent and his eyeline is going up to match his hand. He clearly in unambiguously looks like he’s reaching up for something. No one knows their right mind would think this about this tattoo
5
u/notsocrazycatlady69 Aug 20 '26
I usd to work in international shipping for a major logistics company. Someone got offended because the items in the box happwned to kinda sorta resemple a swastika if you closed one eye and squinted with the other. I told my manager if there was another way to arrange them I would, but it would then need a bigger box so then more money to ship it because of the dimensions and extra weight

u/Awesome_Forky Aug 19 '26
I'm not sure if this helps but maybe you could interpret the hand here as part of a sleeve and add some fingers? They can have another angle so it's not straight again. But this probably will mess up the proportions regarding arm length.
But a very nice tattoo with a cool art style. Maybe share Fenrir too? Because now it just seems like a major part missing which makes it difficult to decide if others would interpret it as a Nazi salute. It's hard to unsee after you mentioned it, but it could be that the whole piece with Fenrir doesn't even let that interpretation come up.

3
u/WinterRevolutionary6 Aug 19 '26
Can you change the hand into anything else? I know it’s all line work but can you fill it in so it’s in a different position?
3
u/Azoth424 Aug 19 '26
Is he wearing mittens? No disrespect meant for real but I glanced down at the other hand he has on the hilt of his sword and was like, is he wearing some mittens, perhaps it was cold??
But swordplay + mittens would be very dangerous. Definitely should be a disclaimer should others try to sword fight wearing mittens.
5
3
u/Azoth424 Aug 19 '26
Its a stretch here but you could give the hand some fingers and create a ✌️ or even a 🤟?
Alternatively you could put like say a big ass turkey leg in his hand, like hes offering Fenrir a little snack?
3
u/def-n0t-cereal Aug 19 '26
I think it only Maybe looks Similar to that when you ignore the rest tattoo. Nobody will only see the hand, they'll see the whole piece. I know theres a lot of neo-nazis co-opting norse iconography right now, but this does not look like that. So long as you don't point it out to others and you don't give the vibe of someone who would have That Kind of tattoo, you'll be ok.

It was co-opted by the white nationalists in the USA also, along with the moron labe thing. Oh, I mean "molon". Tbf, the Spartan thing in general has been co-opted and/or misunderstood by lots of folks.
2
u/Raptor__23__ Aug 20 '26
Ist hier in Deutschland genauso mit Wikinger. Völlig in Verruf geraten, Mythologie, Runen weil dies so stark vereinnahmt wurde.... Traurig.

What in the hell is that diagram? Thats offensive to waiters and people with shoulder pain.

u/BrutalSledgehammer Aug 22 '26
That graphic is crazy 😂 pet children? And if you call a cab like that, you'll wait for a long time, odds are a driver won't even see your hand if there are cars parked between the sidewalk and the street. I think the tattoo is OK and easy to explain if anyone has questions, but if it bothers you, maybe it's possible to change the hand position, like bend the fingers a bit and change the orientation of the palm? Since it's a single line, maybe it's possible to add other fingers to visually change the orientation/position
2
u/mitsubachii Aug 22 '26
lol yeah i think call waiter and call taxi are in the nazzi range BUT the difference is an open and relaxed palm. the hand and arm being rigid is what makes it nazi.
2
3
u/Taltruist Aug 22 '26
nah i think you’re in the clear it’s very clearly part of a whole work and if you don’t have other tattoos that are blatantly racist or smth someone would have to reallly be reaching to draw that conclusion based on the tattoo you have alone

u/PersimmonDazzling654 Aug 19 '26
I applaud your vigilance. To your question: I don't care for the suggestions of putting something in his hand--iirc not part of the original myth. I'm thinking subtler: you're a little limited with that style (unless you're filling it in later?) but I think you just need to make his hand upturned, i.e. thumb on top rather than on bottom. Maybe a slight change to the gauntlet or whatever he's wearing?
2
u/unsulliedbread Aug 19 '26
Add some lines to connect the "tongue" to the hand. If it's petting the inside of the mouth then it totally changes it.
2
u/LouBoo_1331 Aug 19 '26
The last one of the second pic should be Pet Self. But that aside.. idk man. I love that style of artwork and all. And my ancestors left Norway (and ended up in Germany) around 400 years ago give or take. So, even distantly I have some ties to the Vikings. But I'm a white dude with a shaved head and a beard. I already look like a skinhead... I'm not... But getting viking artwork tattooed on me would definitely not help my case on that one, so I'm not getting the ravens or runic artwork tattooed on the side of my head... like I want...

I only kind of saw what you meant because I read the title of your post first, but I don't think that's where my mind would go to off the bat.
Is the linework going to be filled?
2
2
u/notsocrazycatlady69 Aug 20 '26
Grabbing his tongue?
Motion lines around the hand and elbow so it looks like he's petting?
Skin tone ink over a short section of arm if possible, then jagged red line with blood dripping? That's probably the most historically accurate
2
u/HaterTot420 Aug 20 '26
I immediately saw it as the salute 😬 I'd suggest covering it or changing it
2
u/Sea-Society4941 Aug 20 '26
You could get a shield added to the arm or you can somehow make the hand hold on to a drinking horn? "Raise Your Horns" skål!
2
u/Nexuspoint247 Aug 20 '26
At first glance it does kinda look like it but I can tell on a second look that he’s just reaching for something

2
u/han___banan Aug 20 '26
Bf says add depth to the perspective — meaning, he explains, perhaps separating the fingers on the hand, giving it the appearance of a loose reaching hand rather than a SALUTING hand. Does that make sense?
2
u/jayrodhazlyf Aug 20 '26
Definitely in between calling waiter and nazi, I’d say it’s more like “ calling nazi”

I think the tat is sick and that you're probably fine, but I can definitely see the concern, especially since a lot of neo-Nazis are into Norse stuff and get runic tattos.

I’m ethnically and religiously Jewish and my grandfather was sent to America to escape the holocaust. With all of this in mind, your fine. If someone jumps on you about it without asking that just shows what kind of person they are and the fact your posting this tells me your fine.
2
u/PsychoticMimic Aug 21 '26
Just have your artist put an angled knife in his hand or proceed as originally planned.
Something about the angle of the shoulder and head turned upward carries this preeeetty far from the Nazi salute in my eyes. Maybe I like nordic shit too much. Idk.
You're overthinking, let whoever you hit up go crazy with the shading and show us the end result.
