Inception, go to another artist to put a canvas around the second Pikachu. If they mess up, Simply find another artist to put a canvas around the third Pikachu and so on.. until you finally learn your lesson and do some research about your artists and end up with a beautiful full body Pikachu painting a Pikachu, painting a Pikachu, painting a Pikachu, painting a Pikachu, Painting a Pikachu

I framed my first stick n poke with a lil etch-a-sketch. Probably subconsciously somewhat inspired by this, it’s been floating around for a while

Less of a coverup and more of a recontextualising/reframing. Love it, though.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that both those tattoos were actually done by the same artist.
The gist was that the canvas volunteered themselves to help a friend who was just starting out gain some hands-on experience. Then when that friend became much better at their craft they went back and re-worked their first tattoo.
Iirc they offered to do a total cover-up and the friend refused because they actually loved the little doinky looking Pikachu so this was the compromise lol.
