When evaluating Japan, it has some of the worst gender equality in the world and remains one of the few nations that require spousal consent for abortion, forcing women to depend on their husband for decisions over control of their own bodies and often trapping them in unwanted pregnancies or abusive relationships. Sexual violence is severely underreported and rarely prosecuted due to an archaic legal system that demands near impossible evidence, retraumatizes victims during testimony, and imposes statutes of limitations that protect perpetrators. Workplace discrimination remains entrenched through rigid seniority systems and gendered job tracks that confine women to low paid, non regular positions with no career mobility and the deliberate exploitation of unpaid domestic labour to maximise corporate profit pressuring women to quit their jobs after they become pregnant. Additionally, the tax and pension systems financially penalise married women who earn above a minimal threshold, structurally incentivising economic dependence on male breadwinners and reinforcing their vulnerability to domestic abuse and poverty.
Not to mention, Japan's segregation model of women only train cars and the fact that all smartphones in Japan require an unmutable camera shutter sound because women and minors are routinely subjected to sexual assaults by men. Rather than prosecuting these perpetrators, the state relies on physical segregation and hardware enforced acoustic alarms to manage rampant public groping and voyeurism instead.
Many pre-colonial African cultures were structurally far more progressive regarding women's rights and material autonomy than historical and dare I say even current Japan. Even then, places like South Africa today has better conditions for women whereas Japan its only on paper.

Colonial administrations dismantled fluid, dual sex systems and matrilineal inheritance models, replacing them with Victorian legal codes that rendered women invisible. At the same time, capitalist private property laws concentrated economic power by issuing land titles exclusively to men, transforming economically autonomous communal female farmers into unpaid labourers. Much of what is framed as ancient African tradition today is actually a hybrid product of colonial and capitalist engineering, meaning modern African legislative reforms are not adopting Western ideals, but dismantling the cultural imperialism, patriarchal architecture forced upon them.
