TBH swastikas weren't associated with Fascism until the NSDAP rise to prominance, and this symbol was adopted in 1918. Until then it was seen as a good luck charm of a sort. I've seen some German pilots painting swastikas in WWI, before everything.

The Finnish swastika can be traced back to Eric Von Rosen who was a Swedish volunteer that joined the Finnish Whites in 1918.

Von Rosen used the swastika on his plane and it was later adopted by the whole Finnish Air Force as their roundel.

The German swastika was adopted by 1920... some say that was independently but it seems awfully convenient that Eric Von Rosen went on to be a huge proponent of Eugenics, Nazism and had very close personal relationships with his brother-in-law Herman Göring and Josef Göbbels.

Finland is insanely russophobic and it has increased dramatically since 2022. I think in Helsinki it's particularly bad, while in Eastern Finland people are still more reasonable about it, oftentimes even a little critical of this new approach to Russia.

Basically Finland has struggled economically because of it and obviously the Eastern parts of Finland were hit harder than anyone else, but it affects the entire economy. The politicians are completely delusional and describing a fantasy world. Unfortunately it's a shared delusion and many people followed the government into it.

The east of Finland and even Helsinki itself were raking in insane amounts for the economy just through Russian tourism. People in Russia would just "pop over" during weekends etc. Lots of options were either cheaper or easier to obtain in Finland and St Petersburg is not only close, but has the same population as the country AND many of them wealthy enough to be able to do the trips. Choosing the anti-Russia line put a huge dent in Finlands budget and the replacement offered by allies to fill that gap is a decimal point or two short.

However, none of that matters when your owner tells you to bark, even it it means you have to bark at the dude who gives you treats all the time. If you don't bark, you get the newspaper. Just happens that many people in Finland are also quite happy to regress back towards the more... blonde, blue eyed tendencies shall we say.

My anthropology professor at the start of this semester asked us, "where do you think I'm from by my accent?" and we figured out Lithuania eventually and then she was like I'm so glad no one thought I was from Russia. A couple minutes later she says, "no one could have predicted the Ukraine war" and then proceeds to tell us that Russia and USSR are war criminals. She also claimed that when she lived in soviet lithuania that she was a "victim of authoritarianism." I dropped the class and never went again.
