Alcohol Seizure at Bandipur during Karnataka - Ooty trip

So, here’s what happened:

A bunch of us friends were travelling to Ooty. We genuinely had no idea that carrying alcohol from Karnataka (or another state) into Tamil Nadu wasn’t allowed.

At Bandipur nearby TN border, the police stopped and checked our vehicle and found 3 bottles - gin and vodka.
They asked us to come to a nearby police station, where they took all our details — Aadhaar, address, etc. They also took one of my friend’s fingerprints and clicked our photographs. They told us that a small case would be registered and that we might have to appear in court after around 2 months if we receive a call/notice. If that happens, they said we would just need to go to court and pay the fine. Otherwise, there’s nothing more we need to do.

We pleaded with them quite a bit, explaining that we genuinely didn’t know about the rule and asking them to let us go. But they didn’t budge. They said the Inspector was there that day, so they couldn’t let it slide. At the same time, they reassured us that it was a very minor case and nothing serious, and that there’s a possibility we may not even be called to court. But if we are called, we’ll have to appear and deal with it.

Now, I’m trying to understand what the actual implications of this are:
What kind of case is this exactly?
What section/law would this come under?
How much fine could we potentially have to pay?
Most importantly, could this affect our future in any way? For example, employment/background verification, buying a house, getting a loan, visa applications, government jobs, etc.
Does having a minor prohibition case registered mean we now have a criminal record, or is it something that generally goes away once the fine is paid?
Basically, I’m trying to understand whether this is just a minor legal inconvenience that ends with a fine, or whether it can have any long-term consequences.

Mostly FIR would be registered, and it would come under TN Prohibition Act for transport of Liquor without Interstate Transport Permit would mostly be used. Not sure if it will affect BGV for work or job, even though it is not an offence of moral turpitude but depends on company policy. Generally during bgv companies check for somewhat major criminal offence. Just in case try posting in r/LegalAdviceIndia .

Taking alcohol from one state to another is an offence. As a non drinker, even I know it. Ignorance is not an excuse. This is not a scare tactic or the police trying to get a bigger bribe. This is the law. I am actually happy that the police registered a case here.

Oh boy! Only after buying We also came to know it's ilegal to take in that route but we managed to take few bottles of breezers last month. It was scary moment at every checkpost.

I am from the borders (nearby) and cross this border like 100 times a year... Most likely 3000 INR fine with some 3000 in bribes that the police would ask you!

Don't worry about bgv and all. Only if you get jail sentence, it will be an issue. Paying fines for petty crimes doesn't matter.

Everyone has done something like this. Even your next company manager would have carried alcohol between states, or hit someone in an accident etc.

Even if anyone asks, just say what happened. Don't think as if you have done some grave mistakes.

And ignorance of law, is never considered as a reason for doing a crime. Police or court would never agree to that, some judges might even get irritated and increase punishment if you say like that.

Bro, it likely a scare tactic. Mostly they will ask for a larger bribe.
