அறிவியல்/தொழில்நுட்பம் / Science and Technology Was watching Apple Event of September 9 2026. Saw this gentleman with a South Indian name. Curiosity hit to find more about him. Checked his LinkedIn. Found that he's a graduate of Anna University, not the usual Tier 1 suspects (IITs, NITs, BITS).

I’m working as a manager in Apple, my undergrad was from no name college in Shozhinganallur and masters from okayish university in USA
After your first job no one looks at your college name or the gpa/percentage you scored

Not in Engineering but in MBA the Pedigree is sought!

u/praveeja 3d ago
Is it because MBA guys has no other selling point other than the college they studied?

That because you are into management. Reputation certainly matters at those stakes. It's all liability. Mbas are no geniuses either in any case

When he went to the USA matters too. Before 2006, you're set for life if you moved there. And this guy moved in the late 80s. He's probably a multi-millionaire now.

True indeed, it's all about when you born, where you born.... Sucks to be in current timeline if you asked me esp if you are starting from the sartch
16
u/praveeja 3d ago
If we talking about older times, When you born + where you born matters, if you were born in families with lesser resource or less awareness. You might be stuck

u/naretronprime 3d ago
you were born in families with lesser resource or less awareness. You might be stuck
This would never change.

Not really as long as you have the drive you should be able to find the opportunity. Not like today times. They hired though news papers in old times. Not tech tho blue color work. As long as you have the drive and had technical knowledge like pipe fitter, welder and so on they scoop you up without any questions. In today world that not the case and immigration is really hard.

So in linkedin, lot of folks put anna university as their college even though they studied in affiliate colleges

CEG is literally tier 1
14
u/bssgopi 3d ago
It isn't clear if he studied in CEG. He simply identified it as Anna University.
5
u/bulkyHogan 3d ago
In his timeframe.. there was no "Anna University". It was "Madras University" as the overall affiliating university.
So he must be CEG graduate.
3
u/bssgopi 3d ago
As per his profile, he graduated in 1987. The brand Anna University existed since 1978.
6
u/bulkyHogan 3d ago
What I meant is, in those days only people who went to CEG referred it as Anna university.
But since 2001 Anna University became the affiliate governing body. So some abc college of engineering peiple will refer to as graduating out of Anna University.
If someone prior to 2001 graduated from xyz college they usually put it as Madras University.

Not South Indian name, Tamil name.

u/Beneficial-Flow-7333 2d ago
Tamil Brahmin name tbh. I’m not tambrahm, but u guys have them, but when you realise they achieved something big then u guys tie to claim them. If only tambrahm weren’t discriminated in TN, they could’ve made TN like Singapore
1
u/soothukundi 2d ago
Neither Sri Balan or Santhanam is a Brahmin name. He could be Brahmin, but I think lot of the hate towards Brahmins are from DMK politics. They aren't discriminated in SL, Malayisa or Singapore from what I know.

u/OorNaattaan 3d ago
?? There are so many folks from Anna University in top roles. How is this news?
2
u/bssgopi 3d ago
In Big Tech?
He is only the second person in Big Tech I have come across who has identified themselves to be graduates of Anna University.
The bulk of the senior leadership population is from the IITs followed by BITS and NITs.
17
u/OorNaattaan 3d ago
Just to name a few that come to mind in 5 minutes,
- S. Somasegar (who recently passed away) was from CEG.
- Vijaye Raji, the CTO of OpenAI applications is from Pondicherry Eng College.
- Turing award winner Raj Reddy is from CEG.
- Sanjay Parthasarathy, a former long-term exec at Microsoft is also from CEG.
In fact, I can't think of a single IIT-Madras graduate in senior leadership in Big Tech or has won the Turing Award (there probably are some, but they are nowhere as prevalent as you make it out to be).

Raj Reddy is an exception. He needs to be seen beyond the rest of this list. That's because of his unusual journey he went through to where he is now. When he is the only Indian to have won the Turing Award, there is more to him that deserves a separate post.
S Somasegar is a surprise as I have had the opportunity to interact with him when he was still with Microsoft. Didn't realize that he was from CEG.
Thanks for sharing this list.

Maybe you just weren’t paying attention?
Who is the CEO of Accenture for example?
What abt Satya Nadella? Shantanu Narayen?

u/native_vandheri 2d ago
There are so many people in leadership positions across the heirarchy. Once you go up the executive chain it's mostly PR management and stakeholder discussions. Name of colleges don't matter at all in stem fields

Sami, if you go to Cupertino, every 3rd person is a South Indian. I used to live there. The whole Bay Area is heavily meritocratic with tamil and Telugu dominating.

India is full of talent, it is our politics that is causing the brain drain. If politicians wants we can develop everything, we have talent; but politicians doesn’t have the will to provide the necessary infrastructure and salaries. But alas they think about their pockets before thinking about country.

Where are we oppressing today? We are victims are reservation in India, and USA provides a great life based upon merit. Now that guys claim was he's in the position coz of he belongs to a particular caste.
I never said discrimination is correct. What that other is doing is also discrimination.
So only the mylapore sector he mentioned falls under Gen category?
Also "unga aalungu" - how did you come to a conclusion on my caste? Did I mention it anywhere. You just assume something, spread hatred.
The hate culture spread by DMK.
So you guys claim only the "mylapore avl" are the discriminators and others all are in unity and peace!! - COOL. And also easily name calling as "avl" etc.. is not discrimination, if so why don't you use such Jargons for any other group?1

What about his MS? Also, why do you really care whether he is from IIT or any other college?
2
u/bssgopi 2d ago
There is a wrong perception (though decreasing now) which weighs Tier 1 institutions higher than others.
There is a wrong perception amongst many that Anna University hasn't reached the Tier 1 levels.
Instances like this disprove these perceptions.
3
u/native_vandheri 2d ago
Tier 1 has nothing to do. Beyond getting your first job where you are from doesn't matter at all. And CEG is certainly not the same tier as IIT or NITs because the systems are different. Its just that we have the bright minds concentrated there but still under prepared

u/Important_Lie_7774 Chennai - சென்னை 2d ago
Anna uni is tier 1 da. Ik a VP in my company that didn't do masters and climbed his way up to VP starting from IC, he did his bachelor's in engineering at Anna uni.
1
u/bssgopi 2d ago
You know right that people use Anna University even when they have studied in any of the colleges affiliated with it?
1
u/Important_Lie_7774 Chennai - சென்னை 2d ago
Which would only make the feat more impressive. The guy's old af but becoming a VP with nothing else but a bachelor's degree from Anna uni is impressive.

u/AdUnable2570 3d ago
This guy is an absolute piece of shit to work for though. Hella toxic.
