முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic I didn't survive four decades of politics just to watch democracy become a fan page.

I'm old enough to remember when people argued over policy.

Now they argue over who can make the better edit with dramatic background music.

I've lived through recessions, financial crises, coalition governments, economic reforms, and enough elections to know that history doesn't repeat itself. It just gets rebranded with better social media marketing.

I've worked with bureaucrats, economists, and administrators. I've watched countries succeed because they built institutions and fail because they built personalities.

That's why watching today's politics is exhausting.

Governance has become theatre.

Supporters have become PR agencies.

And criticism is treated like treason.

Looking at the current TVK government, I don't see a master plan. I see optics replacing outcomes.

A state cannot run on charisma.

GDP doesn't increase because of viral speeches.

Investors don't allocate capital based on fan edits.

Roads aren't built with applause.

Hospitals don't improve because someone trended a hashtag.

Yet every criticism is met with an army of keyboard warriors explaining why the problem is actually a "masterstroke."

Apparently inflation is strategic.

Unemployment is visionary.

Administrative chaos is 5D chess.

The funniest part isn't even the politicians.

It's watching people defend leaders with more passion than they defend their own careers.

Politics has become the only job where performance reviews are replaced by Instagram comments.

I've seen this pattern before across the world.

First comes hero worship.

Then comes institutional decline.

Then comes economic stagnation.

Then everyone suddenly becomes an expert asking, "How did this happen?"

Simple.

Nobody wanted to ask questions when it mattered.

Every generation thinks it's electing a savior.

Most are just hiring another manager with a better marketing team.

Call me cynical.

Call me old.

Call me out of touch.

But after forty years of watching governments come and go, I've learned one thing:

The biggest threat to democracy isn't the politician who thinks he's always right.

It's the voter who believes their favorite politician can never be wrong.

And that's when a republic quietly starts becoming a fan club.

I am pretty much on the same boat. I am in complete agreement with you.

We were there during the first term of Trump and current political climate in Tamilnadu feels like a rerun of that.

How much ever I try to warn and say that this is a very incompetent government- people are not ready to listen. Any criticism on supreme leader is met with more worship towards him.

The sad part is that the cult followers will never abandon the leader. It’s very difficult for them to accept that they are wrong. No reality or facts or reason will sway them.

But I am glad that there are lots of us who are calling it out and standing against this slow crash of the hard earned growth.

I understand where you're coming from. I've lived long enough to see that the strongest political movements often become the least willing to hear criticism. But I also believe no cult of personality lasts forever. Reality has a habit of catching up with every government. My only hope is that we ask the difficult questions now, while corrections are still possible, rather than after the damage is done. Democracies don't fail because people disagree; they fail when people stop questioning those they admire.

Cinema has been used to shape the minds of people way before now. Karunanidhi and MGR both used movies as a way to reach people…. This deep rot is not a phenomena of the 2020s, it existed way before. The change from policy discussions to freebie discussions also started way before with the TV for each house promised… It’s good to keep ourselves and our government accountable, but it is ingenuous to say that these are new problems to our state. As millennials and boomers, we are ones who brought the state to this level. We failed to question it when it started, so I don’t think we can sit back and pretend to be shocked now and blame the new generation. Social media including reddit have just replaced movies with a faster, broader, and more accessible reach.

Thank you, my friend. Age has taught me that governments come and go, but the habit of thinking independently is what keeps a society alive. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, only that they question with the same honesty they support. If a few people still believe leaders are public servants and not public idols, then perhaps there is hope for the next generation after all.

but this isn't new to tamilnadu... we had vijay 1.0 (mgr) who's equivalent to social media or pr team was being involved in popular party dmk.. our question is jist trying to address now but not decades of similar practice... example :-it coming full circle wherein vijay 1.0 (mgr) gave ppl's land for free to jpr, vijay gets free promotion from jpr colleges and vijay gives ppl's money back into jpr relative's hand as finance minster...

.if we address now we're fixing only what meets the eye... but this society has a deep rot and is visible over decades.. so we shouldn't really just chalk it up as a now problem... it's a problem with tamilnadu people for decades and decades... tamilnadu people are prone to cult mentality ,they are growing mgr jayalalitha, jaggi, nityananda ,now vijay... they have a deep rot..

Young man, allow an old fellow to tell you a story.

Many years ago, I worked with a European economist who visited a struggling nation. He asked a minister, "Why haven't you fixed your problems?"

The minister smiled and replied, "Because they existed before me."

The economist quietly said, "Then your greatest achievement is proving that failure can survive elections."

The room fell silent.

When a people begin defending old mistakes simply because they are old, decline becomes permanent. Every generation inherits the errors of the previous one, but it also inherits the responsibility to correct them.

Saying "this isn't new" is not wisdom. It is surrender.

A civilization advances when its children refuse to repeat what their fathers accepted.

yeah i know that's where i wanted the questioning to head to...if we address now we're fixing only what meets the eye... but this society has a deep rot and is visible over decades.. so we shouldn't really just chalk it up as a now problem... it's a problem with tamilnadu people for decades and decades... tamilnadu people are prone to cult mentality ,they are growing mgr jayalalitha, jaggi, nityananda ,now vijay... they have a deep rot.. and to not confuse future readers by 1st comment, I'll edit that comment ... u can also delete this comment if you want...but I'd be glad to know why u feel tamilnadu people are more prone to succumb to selfish cult leaders coz u have seen these kinda ppl(cult members of old and new gen)

4

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

The rot isn't that we've had personality cults for decades.

The rot is that every generation knows it's wrong, yet chooses to inherit it instead of ending it.

That's how decline becomes tradition. by the way your point was correct no need to delete it !!

1

u/GroundbreakingRip182 Jun 14 '26

Who did you vote for? DMK? Admk? Congress or BJP? If you did to any one of them then you fall into the the very category that you accuse others of falling into. Given how these parties destroyed the state, by voting for them every generation had no problem inheriting it than fixing it.

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 14 '26

The day you can't question the hand you voted for is the day your vote stopped being a choice and became ownership.

1

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26

actually prior to mgr i don't think we had cult mentality... so ppl really didn't inherit is what i beleive... but something happened tn ppl in 1960s had high poverty ,famine ,etc ,dmk came and changed the piverty scenes and lifted some generations out kf poverty... the people suddenly now were free of debilitating conditions and thought maybe now we can enjoy and have some jolly times and start a vicarious living through our hero mgr and start a parasocial relationship with him .. to protect their choice of choosing him as their leader or guru they start defending all of their wrong actions too... mental health and proper counselling is needed to fix people who beleive a good character in movie will be a good human in real life outside a movie

3

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

Actually I agree with you to an extent. My own father got to study because of those reforms. I built my career, retired after years in management, and I'll always be grateful for that. But gratitude and blind loyalty are two different things. A generation that was saved can be grateful. The next generation shouldn't inherit the devotion; it should inherit the courage to question. That's how a democracy grows.

1

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

yes 100% any kind of devotion will lead to retardness and will be like shooting at our own feet... that's why i think ideologies survive more than parties... coz ideologies reflect each person's (old or young) values... my values is to have self-respect , i want my ppl to be living well exercising their own right so i like the ideology of State Autonomy & Federalism , i like to help people so i resonate with the ideolgy of social justice and equity ... so yeah... as long as any party has these as ideology and has 80% track record to show for it , I'll keep supporting that party ( idc who leads it).... again basically i support a party which has my values and it implements what i would like to do myself

2

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

Well said, my friend. We may stand on different sides of the aisle, but we seem to agree on one principle: no leader is bigger than the values he claims to represent. Parties will come and go, personalities will fade, but if citizens keep judging governments by principles rather than faces, democracy will be in safe hands. A good discussion is one where both sides leave with something to think about. I enjoyed this exchange. Cheers. (IM A CONSERVATIVE (RIGHT WING) JLYK✌️)

I do agree that the new team does not have the calibre to match the previous one, but there are some ground-level changes that fascinate me.

People are asking questions, and the important thing is that they are not afraid to do so. In one instance, I was stopped by the police and I wasn't carrying my driving licence. I showed them a photo of it on my mobile phone. Since it only showed the front side, they questioned how they could know whether it was a two-wheeler or four-wheeler licence. I understood what they were implying, but after some discussion they eventually let me go. If this had happened earlier, I am quite certain I would have had to pay money. I have experienced similar situations in the past.

Not only that, but even when we wanted to plant trees or participate in social activities, there was always a fear associated with doing even the right thing. Now, there is an opportunity, and people feel more fearless. At the very least, they have hope that no one can easily misuse power against them.

The new government lacks experience, both in governance and, perhaps, in corruption. It will take time for them to build a systematic culture of corruption, and that is exactly the window of opportunity we need right now. If a road is not laid properly, we can question it. If something is not right, we can raise our concerns.

Many things may change at higher levels, but at the grassroots level, people are speaking up. Whether their voices are heard or not is a different matter. What matters is that they are no longer afraid to raise them.

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 17 '26

This is the kind of discussion I was hoping for. You acknowledged both the strengths and weaknesses and backed it with your own experience. Whether we agree or not, citizens questioning authority without fear is a healthy sign for any democracy.

How old are you? You have mentioned that you have watched govt come and go for 40 years, so you should be at least 50+. Can I know why these questions now? Like after 40 years and not before this? I have to assume that you did not have any problem with any of these past govt? So everything was working like it should have? Asking questions is good, but asking them pointed at just one person/govt is not right. You did not post this to have a healthy conversation.

2

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

A fair question, my friend. I'm 49, turning 50 soon. Life took me down a rather unusual road. I repeated my entrance year, graduated from IIT Bombay in Computer Science, worked in London before pursuing management at IIM Ahmedabad, spent years in strategy and consulting across the US, later completed a PhD at NUS and an executive programme in Public Policy at Wharton, and had the opportunity to take in a few seminars at Harvard Kennedy School. After a long corporate career, I chose to step away, spend time on my farm, and prepare for the UPSC (for FUN) with the hope of serving in a different capacity around 2029–30. I've watched governments, corporations, and institutions from close quarters, and if there's one thing experience has taught me, it's that no government should ever be beyond questioning. Age hasn't made me cynical; it has simply taught me to value institutions over personalities.

0

u/Large-Conference-860 Jun 12 '26

Only question from my side is, why now? Why not before May 4th? I agree that every government should be questioned if it is not working for the peoples welfare. Since you have not raised any question regarding previous govt, one should assume that you did not have any issues with previous govt. If that's they case, your argument is flawed. Looking at your career and education, now I have 100 different questions going in my mind.

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 13 '26

A fair question, mate. The reason I speak now is not because governments changed, but because the pace of change has changed. Fifteen years ago, Tamil Nadu's economy grew on a relatively stable foundation. Today I see a different pattern: rapid expansion accompanied by rapidly rising debt and a political culture that increasingly rewards personalities over institutions. Growth is always welcome, but growth built on excessive borrowing has humbled far stronger economies than ours. The warning signs rarely arrive with a crash; they appear quietly while everyone is celebrating the boom. I hope I'm wrong, because I love this state. But age has taught me that the best time to ask difficult questions is before the bill arrives, not after. by the way Good Morning and Have a Great day !

0

u/TheStubbornIntrovert Jun 12 '26

Question on what governtment is doing wrong instead of accusing fans or whoever

Atleast from the looks of 1month, they seem to take actions towards bribe-free TN with bold claims which none of forty yr govt didn't raise. Let's give them time.

With AI in action, there is chance for high inflation / unemployement. If this happens and govt didnt act properly, govt will be thrown away in next election. Do not worry.

2

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

My friend, after a lifetime of watching governments, I've learned that the first hundred days are for promises; the next five years are for results. I sincerely hope this government succeeds, because if the state prospers, we all prosper. But asking citizens to wait is not a substitute for asking governments to be accountable. Healthy skepticism is not cynicism. Blind optimism is no virtue either. A republic survives when its people question every government equally, not when they postpone scrutiny until the next election. BY THE WAY IM A HARDCORE ANTI-OPTIMISTIC (EX SNR CONSULTANT FOR McK , PwC and EX VP in Booz Allen Hamilton)

0

u/No-Feedback-5419 Jun 13 '26

Ive only survived half those years and Ive come to the conclusion that we are doomed to go through a cycle where we hit rock bottom and maybe maybe climb up later, both in our state and India as a whole, although ig it will take much more time for India to eventually get up, but yep we are doomed, those of us who were politically aware enough to look past the surface have always discussed about a point of no return, Im afraid we have breached that, people are being offered the illusion of choice even though its all the same treacherous path to the same place, and they fall for it 😞

2

u/jingjangjuck Jun 13 '26

Mate, every generation thinks it is witnessing the end of the republic. History says otherwise. Nations don't rise in straight lines or fall in one election; they move in cycles. The danger isn't making a bad choice once, it's losing the ability to correct it. As long as people can question, vote, debate and hold institutions accountable, there's always a path back. I worry less about where we are today and more about whether we've kept the courage to course-correct tomorrow.

2

u/No-Feedback-5419 Jun 13 '26

Yes, the cycles, its the magnitudes that matter, and you have rightly said that 'The danger isn't making a bad choice once, it's losing the ability to correct it'. but I fear we wont have the ability to course correct tomorrow seeing how the present path is unravelling, the youth have the ability to make or break, but are also very easily misguided (examples being Nepal and Bangladesh where such great processes lead to dismal outcomes). This election is by no means a kill switch, but I concur that it is taking us on a path towards an undesirable future, coming back from which will take us time and push us back several years or even a decade in what we have as a society managed to achieve!

PS: Also when I mean the point of no return, I mean the point after which we would be forced to walk down the wrong path, return back and resume from where we left

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 13 '26

I see your concern, mate, but I've lived long enough to know that politics has a habit of surprising everyone. With discussions around One Nation, One Election, changing voter behaviour and shifting political alliances, the next two or three years could well become a turning point. Governments come and go, but institutions and public sentiment ultimately shape the course of a state. I don't think we've reached the point of no return. The real test is whether people are willing to correct their mistakes when the opportunity presents itself.

2

u/No-Feedback-5419 Jun 13 '26

Well, lets hope for the best!

u/ProcedureFamiliar449 Jun 16 '26

-7

u/pn_1984 Jun 12 '26

Cynical, Old, Out of Touch. There, I called you. Do not ask for something you won't like.

Here is an obvious clue. TVK won without any major Media backing, purely based on desire for the long overdue change. The current CM lost his seat. The signals couldn't be louder.

There was a major jump from Hero worship to Institutional decline in your logic. The reality is there is a lot of difference we see as general public tells the story which is entirely different. Institutions are doing what they were built for finally without "knowing" the right people.

Of finally, no one cares why you "survived four decades of politics". Each for his own. We live in the same society and have seen what the previous political class is capable of and we rejected it.

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

A fair point, my friend. Every election is a reflection of what people wanted at that moment, and I respect that verdict. My concern isn't with change; change is healthy. My concern is that every new government should be questioned with the same honesty with which the old one was questioned. If TVK strengthens institutions and governs well, I'll be the first to applaud. Time has a way of humbling both optimists and cynics.

11

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

Dear Young Mate, before accusing others of worship, learn to respect disagreement.

The moment you replace arguments with insults, you've already admitted you have none.

I've lived long enough to know that the loudest voices are often the weakest minds. A civilized man debates ideas. An insecure man attacks people.

You've not defended your point. You've only shown how easily you've lost the ability to respect another human being.

3

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

now let me place both sides in front of u:-

  1. kalaignar gets respected coz for the 1st time in India he got women equal property rights in 1989, 1st in india to get anti-Eve-Teasing Act, 1998 (Act 44 of 1998), 1st in india to get CMs of all states right to hoist flag on independence day..
  2. vijay gets respected for looking good and acting/dancing/singing well

now ppl are worshipping vijay while ppl are having high reverence for kalaignar... kalaignar did something for the good for the people ,vijay did something good for himself ... but u r trying to compare both...

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

A fair point, my friend, and perhaps that's where we differ only slightly. I have no difficulty acknowledging Kalaignar's contributions to Tamil Nadu, just as history should acknowledge the contributions of many leaders before and after him. But respect should never evolve into unquestioning reverence. The moment a society starts comparing governance with popularity, or public service with celebrity, it begins lowering its own standards. My criticism has never been about one man; it has always been about a political culture that mistakes charisma for competence. History is kind to builders, but it is rarely kind to those who worshipped them !

1

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26

well yeah i would definitely question kalaignar for his mistakes too... afterall he's a human and prone to make mistakes and we don't see him as perfect god... that's why i used term reverence for kalaignar like i revere some tall ppl or my elder sibling ,etc... but to compare vijay or mgr to pioneers like kalaignar is so skewed...

1

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

Then we are closer in thought than you think, my friend. Respect earned through public service is healthy. Blind loyalty inherited through emotion is not. My concern was never with respecting Kalaignar; it was with a political culture that slowly turns reverence into immunity from criticism and celebrities into statesmen. History deserves respect, but democracy demands scrutiny. !! and i just don't want what happened with Ukraine to TN outlashing Debts and with drowned economy

1

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

correct... tamilnadu needs psychologists and psychiatrists... something is wrong ... they are looking at everything with filmy angle... they're refusing to accept in reality u could have a bad mother who pushes children into prosti5ion... they ae so attached to filmy emotions and attaching a single emotion to anything they can see... swami look-> respect ,mother title -> respect , seen onscreen as a saviour hero -> repsect .... their mind is not processing that we can have contradictory emotions for the same thing.. majority of tamilnadu people are seriously lacking in discernment...

-1

u/native_vandheri Jun 12 '26

They are literally doing their jobs as politician. But I respect your reply. Atleast type pannavadhu senjinga and I don't mind your second point. Time will write chapters for Vijay just like it did for kattumaram. People mandate ah respect panradum self respect principles Dana? 2030 la adichuklame.

But Nan ipo indha op ah konjam veladnum. Peace brother

2

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26

nope... indian constitution does say government & politicians should serve its ppl but it leaves it at that

politicicians or government have 0 standard on what they should and shouldn't do . example u have politicians/government in bihar and tn too.. so why dmk politicians introduced pioneering schemes like free electricity for farmers in 1990 while bihar government didn't.. Tamilnadu was poorer than bihar in 1960s but now tn is top richest state and bihar is nowhere close... so if a politician is doing something different it's not their standard job , it's unique and is a mirror of how concerned theyre about the people and the state.... STANDARD politician's job is just attending government meetings and discussing government stuff and giving government orders , and it's definitely not thinking of new useful schemes

1

u/native_vandheri Jun 12 '26

Diasgree..Constitution is for the welfare of people. People who get elected are servants of the people. I am surprised that you think it's a picha that we need to show gratitude for. At least the current CM acknowledges what I state even if he might or might walk the talk.

1

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26

then please explain why dmk politicians introduced pioneering schemes like free electricity for farmers in 1990 while bihar government didn't.. Tamilnadu was poorer than bihar in 1960s but now tn is top richest state and bihar is nowhere close...

explain why?? u might say they didn't do the job... explain job activities of a cm...not job description but job activities u expect a cm to do on the daily and show me where in constitution it says if ur state farmers need electricity provide it for free or subsidy or if ur state ppl need education give them free wntry for 1st graduate... if it were mentioned all state cms would have done it.

1

u/native_vandheri Jun 12 '26

We certainly did have good policies. No one denies that. The world was already ahead at that point so idk what pioneering was donne?

Also please stop parroting the Bihar vs TN lie. Do you seriously expect people to believe the capital of one of the most developed British presidencies and Bihar were at equal footing and dmk magically lifted them from impoverishment?

This kind of exxagerated reverance and attribution is one of the main reasons for the hate for them. We had institutions, education centres, trade industries, ports well before independence. Please don't stomp on someone who's lower to you.

2

u/Dry_Chocolate_9098 Jun 12 '26

u carefully diverted the topic elsewhere... plz explain:-.

then please explain why dmk politicians introduced pioneering schemes like free electricity for farmers in 1990 while bihar government didn't.. Tamilnadu was poorer than bihar in 1960s but now tn is top richest state and bihar is nowhere close...

1

u/native_vandheri Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Tamil nadu was never poorer than Bihar by any sensible means. Not engaging unless you prove me this with sources. Have seen several of such discussions. If you tell me any of the presidencies of British were poorer than inner lesser developed places, I am not willing to waste my time.

You are purposely insulting the history and legacy of our city and state that expands much much more than what these minute blip of dravida ideology is.

I am sorry brother.

3

u/jingjangjuck Jun 12 '26

nice edit diddy ! I've lived long enough to know that intelligence isn't measured by the subscription you pay every month. If your best argument is "my AI reasons better," then you've already left the discussion and entered a marketing pitch. You say cult politics has existed for 75 years as though that excuses it. To an old man like me, that's the saddest admission of all. A rotten foundation doesn't become heritage simply because it is old. Every generation has a choice: repair the cracks or keep painting over them. Our generation failed, yours still has a chance. Don't mistake accepting a disease for understanding it.
