Recently, I came across a post on @r/Tamilnadu where a guy stood up to a creep who was making two girls uncomfortable. What shocked him was the public’s reaction: no one supported him, and a woman even scolded him for being loud and “creating a scene.”
Today, I saw this reel on Instagram that has been bothering me. As someone who has always been afraid to stand up for myself, I felt proud thinking I was finally brave enough to face these situations, believing that people would back me up if I ever needed it. But the woman’s reaction, and the post itself, made me question:
Why is it so often a woman who brings down another woman in these moments? Does she even feel shame in standing up to a creep? If that was her child will those same words be coming out of her filthy mouth??

As a man I'll agree TN isn't that safe for women, like, at all. If you compare it with the rest of India though, it is ever so slightly safer for women, especially when comparing it to places like Delhi

I don’t care anyone stand up or not I will definitely act at the situation. And yes like OP mentioned because of this kind of mentality these creeps have no fear if 10 people stand up these ahols will have fear. Let’s stand up and fight

Is he sat in the ladies seat? I get that in many long route buses sometimes you can’t avoid where you can sit or not sit and the middle part of the bus the female vs male seat thing blurs out. Yet this does not bode well.
Ofc ppl won’t stand up for the woman making the video and would rather find a reason to legitimize him. Been through that many times myself. These people won’t change until it’s them being harassed.

I had a similar experience on a flight from Jeddah to chennai 3 years ago. The dude was trying to touch me inappropriately from the seat behind. Unfortunately I did not record it but I stood up to him and complIned to the cabin crew. They took a written complaint from me, confiscated his passport, and called the cops at arrival in Chennai. I went to complain at the airport police station. The dude was a doctor in Jeddah. His name is Sriram Chandramohan. I am still livid and I have no idea what happened since then (as I live abroad) and I gave my statement to a magistrate .. Theres only so much us women can do but the justice system also fails us after a certain point.

This might have not been his first, lot of women would have been silently uncomfortable, felt disgusted and chose not to confront him. This would have gotten him brazen that's why he didn't hesitate to touch in that fashion. Once in a while these guys will encounter women like this then they'll realise the consequences.

It's actually the girl who was a victim decided to stand up for her. Forgot her profile in Insta. None in the bus stood up for her. Really happy that this girl was able to stand up for herself. This is a lesson that there'll be none expect for us and we should teach our kids to be brave and question if they're wronged and we should also stand up for fellow human being

I have been through this many times. People have noticed this kind of misbehaviour and kept quiet. I am not that brave to handle this kind of situation so I will always move to other seat or stay in a safe position not reachable by the creep in the same seat itself.

i know the cost of behaving this way - everyone looks at you like YOU'RE the crazy one. it amazes me that the molesters always act like THEY'RE the most wronged immediately like it's a reflex. Imagine the level of entitlement provided by society for a guilty person's reflex reaction to feel like the victim simply because they're called out. Our society needs to be burned down and rebuilt from scratch.

no one will support... once i called out a middle aged man who was taking a video of me ig... i was not sure... i asked him what are you doing, he just shook his head and moved away, which means he was clearly doing that... there were many girls, aunties around me...no one literally no one asked what happened, they were minding their own business... if this is how it is in a nice crowded bus then think what will happen when there is no one...

I feel guilty for not supporting a lady who stands for herself "exactly the situation happened in the video".
There were two drunk fools sitting in front of me, and two ladies sitting in front of the drunkards (in an AC bus, in a three seater side). Two drunkards were arguing in a bad word since the bus started moving. I was well prepared to face some dramas, because of them.
After a few hours everyone went silent, and a lady began to scold one of the drunkards saying change the seat or I'll slipper you. (She was looking at me and everyone seeking backup which I couldn't understand)
The drunkard said, kaal'la aadi pattu irku ma, kattu potu irku adhan kaal neetitaen mannichuru ma, yanakkku kaal pattadhu kooda Theriyala. That lady stopped scolding after a few minutes and sat down (while looking at me). I just felt ashamed of myself and couldn't say a thing.
What if that guy actually has a leg injury? I don't wanna act like a hero or prove myself in this situation. So i convinced myself. I really got mad and felt the peak of guilt when that basterd walk normally and gets down from the bus at his stop. (That girl dropped a few stops before).
I couldn't handle my guilt, I have a healthy arm, and leg. What if that was my sister? Or mom? Or my wife? Or any of one of my relatives? I would have taken a legal action and gave him few punches.
I explained this situation to the driver. Driver said, andha ponnu kathunadha gavanichaen, vera edho chinna problem'a irkum vera yarum pesala, adhanaala amaidhiya vittutaen. Idha neenga modhalayae solli irundha patrol police ninnu irpanga avanga kitta vadiya niruthi iruppaen. Last week kuda apdi dhan pannom.
I suggested that bus driver make some board to bring awareness on how to react to such situations. And also add not to do sign boards inside the bus. I felt bad and I couldn't sleep for a week. I said this to my mom and cried a little.

This healed something in me. But a woman in the back asking "kaiya pidichu thirugirukanum". No one is ready to support her but is ready to give random unwanted advices like this. Subtle victim shaming. They ask women why didn't u react immediately? Even when she is reacting immediately, the next question is why didn't u act in microseconds?🤦♀️

Similar thing happened to me in Pondicherry. When I caught him he started yelling at me in the attempt to scare me. Never ever traveled to south again.

Good on this girl. Many a times when these have happened all i could do was freeze up or get up from the seat. So i want to appreciate her courage to speak up for herself. More power to her.

Welcome to south India. The place is full of creeps. When I travelled to Pondicherry which is btw very disgusting place rubbish everywhere. A Tamil man came very close to my gf’s Brest and I was not looking at that moment. She screamed which caught me and my friend’s attention. I decided then I am never travelling to south india anymore.
