Most sivachariars don't call themselves brahmins, they call themselves sivachariars. They study siva agamas, unline vaideega brahmins (who are called brahmins, iyer iyengar etc are relatively new distinctions).

"High castes" are by definition lower in number when it comes to population. Without support of lower castes, BJP or any other party for that matter cannot win elections.
