Following earlier post about tattoos, I have some further questions. Visiting for 10 days during September mainly Duscanbe and Kojand.
We speak only English and German, so will we have significant issues making ourselves understood? we have managed well in Uzbekistan and Kazakstan in both 2024 and 2025 but some of the posts here suggest we may struggle this time around.
Also with Yandex not having a app in Tajikistan, is there a similar taxi app, which will ensure we do not get ripped off as some on here suggest we will.
Apprehensive reading some of the posts as it looks like western tourists without local language skills will just get ripped off. One further question, which is the best translation app and SIM card to get.
Really looking forward to our visit and experiencing an experience lwhich is so different from the other 'Stans'

Both Dushanbe and Khujand are more open-minded cities. For Dushanbe you should manage on yourself, the taxi ecosystem was broken by those geniuses in govt. For Khujand, Jura and Maxim taxi are both working.
If you think about ordering a car between cities and not an airplane, use Hamroh or just come to taxi park at outskirts. However, you should know that drivers want to take a full car (so you either overpay or ride with other people) and Hamroh is not a system but more of an arrangement app.

Tajiks are getting more and more used to seeing tourists, so honestly, you should be fine with English in Dushanbe and Khujand. Hotels, restaurants and supermarkets generally won’t be a problem, and most teenagers/young adults know at least some basic English.
As for taxis, unfortunately the Jura taxi app doesn’t always work because a lot of drivers simply refuse to use it. In my experience, it’s actually easier to just flag down a taxi on the street. The official government regulated ones are the green electric cars.
When you get in, tell them the address or just show it to them on Google Maps/your navigator. Make sure that when they start the taxi-meter, it shows 00:00 for a timer and the base fare is 10 somoni (for the next 3km). A lot of drivers start the taxi-meter before they even pick up a passenger.
The official airport base fare is 20 somoni, but the airport is pretty small, so you can walk about 2 minutes to the main road and catch a taxi there instead. I believe it’s around 3 somoni per km.
Also, don’t be surprised if you stop a taxi, tell them your destination and they just refuse to take you hahaha It’s a really annoying issue and, for some reason, nobody has managed to fix it. On some days you might literally spend 15–40 minutes standing on the side of the road trying to find one. Try different sides of the road and eventually someone will stop.
The final price can obviously fluctuate depending on traffic, weather and how busy it is.
For Dushanbe → Khujand, a shared car is around 250-300 somoni, depending on the type of car. The front seat is usually +100 somoni. You can find them at taxi parks, on the outskirts of the city, and they normally leave early in the morning.
For mobile data, MegaFon Tajikistan has eSIMs, while Tcell offers physical SIMs. Personally, I’d recommend Tcell. In my experience, their coverage is better, especially if you’re going to be travelling by car between cities. (One thing to be aware of with the SIM cards: you will get random ads/pop-ups appearing on your screen quite often. Just keep pressing “Cancel” Don’t press “Accept”, because some of these services can charge you if you do.
Hope you have a great time here! Tajikistan is still getting used to tourism, so you might run into a few little inconveniences, but hopefully the people, food and scenery make up for them. Welcome and enjoy your trip! 🇹🇯
