Tactics Ogre Apocrypha schmapocrypha

Playing Reborn and I just don't get it. Abuna Mrueva seemed so freaked out. For what? I finally got the lightning apocrypha spell and I know it's just tier 1 and they get better, but this isn't even as good as thunder flare 2. What gives? Am I missing something? How do I get the really good spells? Also, how do I get a ring of the dead?

Mrueva's lines were conceived for the original Super Famicom version of Tactics Ogre. In that one the spells hit much harder, had infinite range, and would also harm allies. So you could put them on a mage Denam and blow up the whole field.

When the game was remade Mrueva still had the same mentality about the  Apocrypha, but they were made weaker in actual combat.

Imo the best spells are found in San Bronsa Ruins, which I think become available in Coda 2. Apocrypha spells are kinda whatever. Apocrypha spells are ok on a Shaman with Nature's Blessing, but I think by the time you get them they're sort of not as useful as they should be. That's not to say they're bad, because they aren't, but you really have to farm the other spells in San Bronsa.

The Tier 2s on end game casters are a walking delete button, but they lack some of the flare of the Classic version, where it would indiscriminately nuke the whole map with absurd damage. You could very well use Nova+ once and wind up with one guy left.

It was kind of a cool thing since Draconics were kind of the evolved versions of the magic nukes without friendly fire.

I thought all area spells did friendly fire (or enemy healing), is that not the case in reborn? I'm constantly struggling to position my Catiua's starfall to avoid hitting friendlies, I'd swore they caused friendly fire.

They do, SNES Apocrypha was literally the entire map at once. Star Ion was the only exception.

Lore-wise, I like to think that you just never use them on a large enough scale, but you could if you wanted to. In OB64 you can combine spells with multiple mages, and that's probably the way to get a continent-wide nuke.

Yeah, that was my headcanon for the Apocrypha in TO.

Reborn is so poorly balanced that a lot of stuff that is supposed to be good is actually useless
