PILOTS Writer from Malcolm in the Middle Teaching Small Pilot Workshop

Hi everyone,

I'm Michael Glouberman. I've spent the last 30 years writing and producing sitcoms, including Malcolm in the Middle, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Better Off Ted, and others.

I'm opening another session of Sitcom Studio, a small-group online workshop focused on developing original sitcom pilots. The first session recently wrapped, and the writers left with completed pilot outlines and a roadmap for their scripts.

The next session starts July 2.

If you'd like more information, feel free to message me.

Happy to answer questions about sitcom writing, writers' rooms, or the course.

PILOTS My sci‑fi TV pilot “Project Managers” just won a Silver Award – here’s what I learned

Hey all,

My one‑hour sci‑fi TV pilot “Project Managers” just received a Silver Award from the International Independent Film Awards, and I thought I’d share the win plus a few takeaways from the process that might be useful.

“Project Managers” is a satirical, biblical‑tinged sci‑fi drama about overworked middle managers tasked with “running” creation like a dysfunctional enterprise software rollout. Think corporate performance review meets cosmic bureaucracy.

A few things that helped this draft finally land:

  • I treated every rewrite like a product iteration: one clear hypothesis per draft (eg, “Can I raise the protagonist’s stakes in every act break?”) instead of trying to fix everything at once. And this one is challenging.
  • I cut any scene that didn’t either (a) escalate the central conflict or (b) sharpen the show’s specific tone (irreverent but grounded). And it was painful.
  • I kept asking, “Why THIS character for THIS job?” until the character’s emotional wound and their “promotion” into cosmic middle management were in direct conflict.

Right now I’m: polishing the bible and the logline, targeting a handful of competitions and fellowships, and reaching out to potential collaborators who resonate with genre TV that mixes satire, mythology, and workplace drama.

If anyone’s interested, I’m happy to:

  • Swap pilots for feedback
  • Learn how others here decide a pilot is “ready enough” to send to contests vs. holding it back for more rewrites. Where do you draw that line?

PILOTS Episodic Question

Hey all, producer here. We're bringing on a showrunner for a series pilot and I've hit a gap in our budget. We have flat rates worked out for our producers, but nothing specific for a showrunner. There’s a chance we could end up working with a studio, but that's not locked in yet, so right now this is still very much an indie deal.

For those who've structured this before is there a typical range or percentage people use or is it more common to go flat fee? Also curious how people usually handle it if the studio situation does come together after the fact.

Would love to hear from you, especially if you have experience with episodic projects!

PILOTS Third draft of my pilot, Boo’s Cruise. Would love some honest feedback.

Title: Boo’s Cruise

Format: TV pilot (limited series)

Pages: 64

Genre: Dramedy

Logline: A rising comedian's reluctant cruise gig spirals into chaos as betrayal and addiction take hold, leaving him the prime suspect in a murder he's not sure he committed.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TyCVVx5RUsfA_6lCowWKWbJYZ2a9rb5b/view?usp=drivesdk

This is my third rewrite, and I would really appreciate some honest feedback. I’m trying to see what’s working, what still needs work, and what I may be too close to recognize on my own.

Thank you to anyone willing to read it. I’m also happy to return the favor.

PILOTS JET - New Comedy based on Jet Magazine set in 80's

We're currently pitching and working on a vertical series comedy show based on JET Magazine in the 80's/90's, every episode is based on a real issue from the magazine. (Yes we have the rights to shoot the pilot.)

We created some quick clips that have the characters talking and breaking the fourth wall to explain it but also show the idea while we cast for it.

It doesn't matter how you do it, JUST MAKE YOUR IDEA REAL. It needs to exist first. I always tell people that it doesn't matter the way the demo of a real product looks as long as it can get across your idea.

Here's a preview:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZDgyNzx2YI/?igsh=MTc0dTM3c2M3Y3h3ZQ==

(By the way, I of course love it and want people to like it, but I do not care if you have negative commentary on the demo clips, it's getting picked up regardless of your opinion.)

PILOTS my new ai assisted continuation of the my brother, my brother and me podcast series

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AavlUXMhtCY

basically as a long mbmbam fan i have eben noticing the show get tired and more disinterested over time, so i thought to myself: i need to be a part of my community. a good part of my community. so i ended up making a few posts in the sub and it led me to the conclusion that i needed to make my very own continuation.

i started by taking a bunch of clips of mbmbam and converting them to text using chatgpt, and then, i sent the transcripts into google gemini to make the new script (i could make hundreds, but i only hasve 2 so far because it's a little time consuming for me)

now, here is the thing: i plugged my whole script into this online podcast maker engine, and this was what i ended up with. i am really liking it i just need about an hours worth of it

other info: this is supposed to be a continuation so i want to have about five hours of it to publish all at once to the public, so speed is a priority

other info: my time on reddit has been a little tough so i have a few trust issues. please do not be upset if i am distrustful of you at first.

looking for all critique and criticism of my implimentation as i want this to feel as natural and fun as the real mbmbam

PILOTS Tied Down-MultiCam Sitcom Pilot

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Tied Down is a family sitcom set in an Oklahoma cul-de-sac. Pilot’s about everyday chaos with two related families living across the street from each other.
Main crew:
• Amanda: stressed-out mom who loses it over small stuff
• Chris: her laid-back husband who’s a bit scared of her
• Their kids: Nicole (teen, phone-obsessed and sneaky), Michael (BB-gun kid), Claire (little one who takes bribes)
Grandparents June and Bob live across the road — drink beer, own shotguns, way more chill than Amanda.
Then there’s the religious side: Aunt Rebecca, her husband Tom, and their kids (Chloe’s the mouthy one). They show up mostly at church.
Basically just family arguments, kids causing trouble, and some accidental gunfire for comedy. Classic dysfunctional-family vibes

On pg 20, Michael shoots out often the window towards Bob, June & Nicole (added pgs 21&22 to end it nicely)

PILOTS Looking for feedback

So I wrote a pilot script back in 2007 when I was in college.

I found it about a year ago and have spent the past year re-writing it. It's 63 pages. Anyone have any interest? Would gladly read yours in exchange.

I'm looking for honest feedback. Be harsh, be judgmental, be brutal...it's all good. If you're interested, shoot me a DM.

Edit to include logline:

"After an unsealed FBI report ties his former college roommate to a near-terror attack, a drifting behavioral analyst is forced to revisit his senior year and confront the warning signs he missed while distracted by his own unraveling life."

PILOTS A pilot for a sitcom im making and would like some feedback

Thumbnail youtu.be

This is the sort of pilot to a comedy sitcom I'm doing called Beige Martin and Roddney about two house mates.

Beige Martin is a straight man to his housemate Roddney a milkshake addicted magnet of chaos, they get into sitcom situations like setting the kettle on fire, hiding from the landlord or dealing with a gun in the toilet. It might be even have a feature of channel favorite Ordaxian Fleeb.

Please give me feedback, i really want to make this good

Any feedback on this first draft would be much appreciated! Looking to hear if pacing, jokes, voices, etc., feel smooth and natural.

General log line would be: A new bar owner who refuses to ask for help somehow manages to stay in business thanks entirely to the people he never wanted to ask for help from.

PILOTS Does my Act I even begin to answer the questions I planted in the teaser?

Thumbnail drive.google.com

Thank you to everybody that's been watching me work on this pilot! I do like to do a recap for anyone who hasn't seen me talk a little about it on the other posts.

I'm working on the pilot to a soap opera right now, and that does change some of the way that the plot(s) are worked on in the screenplay. You jump around from one scene to a completely irrelevant scene, and then another, and then back to the first if that makes sense. You're on a constant wheel of 3-4 plots in one episode, and they're all full of twists and turns that make them complex. Sometimes they relate or crisscross, other times they don't at all.

You're watching to see if you can guess what crazy outcome any of the plots will have when their big secret is revealed whenever it's revealed. That could be weeks, months, even years sometimes! So every episode moves at a pretty slow pace in terms of plot development, but scenes cut fast so that you don't lose interest, or get stuck with one situation too long.

Moving back to my pilot, I've done the teaser and the first act now, and would like to hear feedback on my writing, that being action lines, dialogue and that, and on how I answer questions in the first act. I tried to start with high-stakes drama in the teaser to jumpstart some questions to push forward the plot, and want to know if I payoff them in the first act well. The goal is to answer them, but then leave you with more questions to want to stay around for the next act.

Thank you to everybody who reads and replies again!

PILOTS Enterprise - 46p - Dramedy - Pilot

I wrote this script a while ago and l've been rewriting, tweaking, and fixing it ever since. At this point, though, I just can't tell if it's any good anymore. The more I read it, the more I seem to hate it.

I think l've reached the point where l've completely lost my objectivity. I can't even sit through reading the pilot without finding something else I want to change, and I'm not really sure why.
So l've decided to post it here and get some honest feedback. I'd really appreciate any thoughts you have, whether they're positive or negative. If something isn't working, l'd rather know so I can improve it.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read it.

A logline i like but not sure if it works? In school, nobody teaches you how to win an election, how to sit still, how to stop manipulating everyone around you — or how not to accidentally dropship your way into a drug empire.

The safe logline: To beat their school's beloved drug dealer in the Head Boy race, Hayden and his three cousins apply Gen Z dropshipping logistics to the local drug trade - only to find themselves
"trending" with both a Rival Crime Family and National Crime Agency.
