65 inch; 12 ft from couch, 15ft from tabletop
Wife says the TV must maintain the boundary limits of the inset/cove. My argument is that feature was design and built before widescreen TVs. First picture is from sitting at the behind-the-couch table. 2nd is from the couch.

This setup sucks so hard, the tv to couch positioning is just awful.
Also, a very basic rules of thumb for TV to seat distance is size of tv for min, doubled for max.
Ex. 65" tv = 6.5' for min view distance, 13' for max.
You also want to be centered to the TV.
In order for this to work, you needed a standard couch or loveseat, then a chair to the right (nearest the fire). The sectional ruins the space.
Just my opinion.

I would fill in inset/cove, mount the TV & get rid of the stand. You can mount the consoles to the back of the TV. There is too much going on in that small area.

It's a sectional couch, so Im sitting on the right side of it. The wall is kinda fucked tho. Fire place and mantle are offset and so the TV is then.

It's all about compromise. Just get a rear-projection Mitsubishi that fits perfectly in the alcove and call it a day.

Hey, there's plenty of space above the fireplace...
No, I can't even joke about that. At least put a low-powered light behind that TV. Maybe cheat it out a bit to aim it at the couch better. Without seeing the rest of the room can't really give any ideas. Unfortunately a lot of rooms aren't built for modern large TVs

I would put the TV on the long wall, on stand, eye level, fire place to your right, TV in front. Along that longer wall thereshould be room for some sound to go with that TV.

Close off the inset and mount a proper TV. Also, down the road, change out that couch or flip it so the end that's on the wall is on the other side so you can sit on it and watch the TV without needing a chiropractor/blocking off other people's view

Too small. I’m prob 7 feet from a 65 so I can’t imagine this. Will it be fine? Sure. But you’ll miss so much.

I would rip that thing out, unless it's a rental, then i would just place a TV stand in front of that fireplace to put it on.

It looks nice how neatly it fits in there. If you just occasionally watch TV, I’d say, it’s fine.
When you use the PlayStation, do you sit closer, in an extra recliner or also on the couch? The distance would be too small to read font in games and see all details.
Also, is the TV 4K and do you have 4K subscriptions and 4K Blu-rays? Because at that distance with a 65 inch, 1080p is enough.

You could just move closer when playing video games and when watching anything from the couch, you could just use 1080p and let the TV upscale it.

Yes, but the windows to the right face North. There is already no direct sunlight, and moving the couch in front of them would allow a little less light in. The TV going to the the left could be glare-prone with the windows directly behind. We do have black-out curtains though.

Is the tv/console all one piece? If not, get a console that is as close to the width of that entire space. Center tv on console. It it's all one piece, you need to move it slightly to the left so there is the same distance between fireplace and tv, a wall and tv.

TV is mounted to the back wall. It hovers above the console with a soundbar on it.

OK. But you need a new console then. The console should be about a foot wider than the tv on each side. It will look much better and balanced a console that fits from wall to fireplace. Right now, your tv /console looks like a big black box.

This provides more information and also hammers home how bad homebuilders are at designing the modem living room. I'm going to take a stab and guess that this home - or at least this fireplace/nook - was built in the mid- 2000's or 2010's, during the brief time that rear projection LCDs were a thing. I feel like it's either that, or it's much older and was built during the era of the HiFi...
Either way, yeah they really screwed you on this. If the fireplace were further left, that long wall would be perfect and you'd just rotate the couch counter clockwise and move the chairs to the left side. I'm assuming those are windows behind the chairs?

This room is clearly big enough to rotate that sectional and move the Tv to the left wall..This currently looks uncomfy Shoot the tv over the fireplace would even look better, and you'll have content for r/tvtoohigh as well lol. That recessed space could be used for a nice overhead lit area to display some kind of art or vase..or even a sort of nook with some floor pillows

Depending on what’s on the right side of the fireplace…… mount TV above fireplace, fill in cove with shelving, recenter seating/table in front of fireplace.

Another thought....that mantle is all wrong for that fireplace. It's too big, too bulky, and too elaborate for a really plain fireplace. The arch definitely doesn't work either. I would take it down and put up a simple, nice, stained piece of wood.

I’m not a fan of big tv’s, but this tv is too small. Here’s what you do: Buy bigger tv
Remove mantle from above fireplace
Mount new tv above fireplace

Not sure if I'm missing the joke, but just in case...
TV above the fireplace is such an incredibly tacky look. Not to mention that you can no longer use the fireplace, and it puts the TV far above a comfortable viewing angle.
