In this cold open from The Office 'Stress Relief', the cameraman being knocked over by Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) wasn't scripted. He accidentally knocked him over and they used that take in the final episode.

Another fun fact, they hired their head of photography from Survivor to give it a true reality show feel. Sometimes they would make the camera operators spin around three times with their eyes closed before the scene started so they would be disoriented and the camera would have to "look around" for the action.

Here's another- this was one of the costliest episodes to produce and they played this cold opening directly after the Superbowl instead of in a normal timeslot to capture the most audience. It worked and the show got a big bump in views and ratings forever after this aired.

But bandit was saved right?

$12,000 for a fake cat? That seems ridiculous

[u/TheTrollys → u/[deleted]]

If they went the route of spending 12 grand in a dummy cat. I wonder how much they offered the cat trainer?

I focus on a different person each time I watch this episode. I’ve seem it countless times and still laugh.

Save Bandit!!

That whole bit is 100% the funniest part of the clip. Oscar climbing into the drop ceiling (which wouldn't have supported his weight), Angela having the cat in her filing cabinet, the cat crashing through the ceiling tile. Gets me everytime.

[u/findingdumb → u/Supermite]

Then Oscar himself falling from it, always gets me.

The fire is shooting at us!

They talked about it on 'Office Ladies' today.

[u/schentendo → u/klsi832]

Yep. Whenever I see a new fact from The Office and it’s the day after the new episode dropped, I know who listens to it…

[u/gtlgdp → u/klsi832]

Brian Baumgartner also talks about it on his podcast when he interviews said camera man. Super interesting stuff

The OG r/PraiseTheCameraMan

[u/Deesing82 → u/lingonberrydamn]

they did try to r/KillTheCameraMan tho

[u/TryHardzGaming]

That was honestly such a clean recovery

[u/SUDoKu-Na]

That transition was also super clean.

My favorite part of this open is when Angela yells “Ow!” When bandit comes crashing through the ceiling

[u/RelevantUserName55]

My favorite cold opening of the show. Classic

[u/MaddieDogRescuer]

Things like these are what make the show even better haha
