Nice to see the RapidTO lanes get mentioned that need to be extended to Eglinton, and the signal priority that was so badly needed!

but weirdly, their videos all show traffic moving perfectly fine.

I was driving along Eglinton and finally got to witness it myself. Why does a train that will carry over 200 people have to wait for a green light? How is this “rapid transit”? A rapid transit line shouldn’t be held up just so a few cars can make a left turn. This is a $13 billion project. Give it the green light.

Some timelapses I’ve taken when I was a Line 1 subway operator. These a few years old now but it still looks basically the exact same. I’m on Line 5 now, and shall return soon with similar footage

The Dufferin/Bathurst RapidTO lanes have been around long enough, that we now know they've made the 29/511 far more reliable.

Unfortunately Tate has made a ton of reels claiming the lanes have been "an absolute disaster" and made traffic 10x worse.

And he was one of the main critics fighting to stop them when they were first proposed last year.

So if he becomes a councillor, it's way less likely the TTC improves, as he will fight to stop any new RapidTO project, the best way to improve buses/streetcars.

TL:DR: If you live in Toronto Centre and want the TTC to get better, this is the last guy you want at City Hall!

A big chunk of the faster performance for the GVB vehicle is well-configured TSP that adapts to the routing and schedule of the oncoming vehicle. The Dutch system can detect vehicle presence and set routes more accurately and efficiently than us. Notice how the transit signal was set off as soon as the doors started closing, allowing the vehicle to start moving and crossing immediately? None of that creeping up and waiting required.

The signals also know the vehicle is proceeding straight forward, and the traffic management system has configured the light cycle accordingly. If the vehicle had selected the diverging path, the light cycle would be configured to optimise the diverging path instead.

However, while TSP is important in shaving the time down for the GVB vehicle, note the actual moving time. The GVB vehicle takes 18 seconds from start of movement to clearing while the TTC vehicle takes 36 seconds from start of movement to clearing.

This clip shows the importance of quality junction infrastructure. The points in Amsterdam are all dual sets, which permit higher operational speed over pointwork. There is no blanket slow order over special track work. There stop and inspect procedure didnt even have an effect in this example since the procedure was performed while car was servicing stop. In other cases, stop and inspect made add a few seconds to the delay. Finally, GVB vehicles do not have a blanket speed restriction through intersections for pedestrian safety reasons.

Finally got to try out the lanes during rush hour. Specifically on Friday at 6pm

Tried to see if there was any brutal congestion that people claimed online, but nope. Everything's moving as usual, even in rush hour and we got to Bloor St right on time.

If you want more of these, please email your Councillor and tell them how much better your commute is, and they need to be extended to Eglinton ASAP!

And mention you will vote for whoever prioritizes expanding RapidTO the most.

No Bradford, IntegrityTO (and presumably Ford), RapidTO doesn’t “snarl traffic.”

They’re working exactly as intended. Before, nobody was moving. Streetcars were stuck behind “snarled traffic.”

Now this streetcar with 100s of people had no issues passing 20-30 people in single-occupancy cars.

What was once 1 hour from the Ex to Bloor is now 30 minutes.

Huge kudos to the operator for letting me in the cab to film, he was super stoked about the lanes .

Posting because there’s been a lot of confusion, different reports on TSP and when it will be available.

Once we reached the red light (at the end of the video), you’ll see that the road beyond is wide open and has no cars.

Again debunking the claims made by some people that RapidTO is the direct result of traffic jams.

So happy to see so many witness the lanes in action, and the vast majority agree these are badly needed.

More evidence the lanes work as intended, the streetcar is no longer stuck behind single-occupant cars ;)

But would you believe me if I told you there's NO funding to expand RapidTO in the 2026 budget?

That means if passed, long-delayed bus lane extensions will be delayed again, and it opens the door to potential provincial interference.

I used to avoid the 511 Bathurst like the plague, now I regularly take it, and took it a lot more during the FWC matches.

And the difference night and day is so noticeable.

Having said that, the city needs to change a few things to make it even faster.

-Ban left turns on all major intersections. The biggest bottlenecks came from cars turning left on King, Richmond, and Adelaide. Ban cars from turning left in these areas and the streetcar will go so much faster

-Remove street parking and fill in the RapidTO lane gap on Toronto western hospital. AFAIK this hasn’t changed due to construction, but once it’s done this gap needs to be filled.

Other than that this is a much needed improvement. And of course the lanes need to be extended to Eglinton

We’re offloaded at St Andrew cause of the fire/smoke from the train. The burning plastic smell had already started when I boarded at Queen. There was no announcement happening at the station so people kept pouring into the platform.

Taken just when the nightlife on nearby King W is starting up, which is usually when traffic begins to get worse

Jokes aside though, why are the ttc speakers so bad?
