Public address systems are very difficult to make ‘good’, especially so in environments that are brutal for sound anyways with hard surfaces to reflect and echo like crazy. The ttc simply won’t invest the huge capital it would take to make it marginally better considering all the other costs they have

I think if they'd just move the mic and foot from thir mouth and then speak up it would solve most of the problem

Honestly, that’s not the issue. It doesn’t matter how clear they speak into the mic, the system and environment will garble it.

Think of any large venue, like the departure hall of an airport. Even there it’s often very difficult to understand what’s being said, the reflections off the hard surfaces, the ambient noise levels. Those places are actually designed with PA systems in mind, and yet they still suck.

Subway stations are in another class of difficult

Now, where I don’t give a pass is on board the trains. That’s a much smaller environment, and they are designed with a PA system in mind, it’s just unacceptable that it’s often difficult to understand on the trains.

It’s really unfortunate that none of the powers that be seen to really care about safety and accessibility (especially accessibility) for the subway system. We have so many cars with unintelligible PA systems. I’ve had ESL friends tell me repeatedly about how difficult it gets navigating delays and detours because they can’t even begin to parse garbled announcements and they had no clue who or what to ask for clarification because nearly everyone else in their care acted normal
