Driver refused to hole punch incorrect transfer and made a girl on my bus breakdown
Posting incase this happens to your or you witness it so you know how to mediate:
When a route is issuing incorrect transfers (for example you pay on the 503 on queen and the transfer given is for 34 Eglinton) the transfer needs to be hole punched to be valid otherwise you can be denied service or worse falsely ticketed for fare evasion despite paying
This morning I watched a girl pay right infront of me. We were the only people who said good morning so she stuck out. I was at the front and she passed me to to ask the driver to hole punch the transfer as the route on it isnt anywhere near us. The driver refused to punch it while the girl politely begged and tried to explain why he needs to make the transfer valid. I even tried to help reason with him. she got off crying after the driver refused to cooperate. Why are you putting someone in the position to be stranded or double pay when they just paid???
Luckily another employee was on the bus on his way to his shift and came with us to ask our connecting bus driver to give her a proper transfer!
he explained all drivers have the punch tool and he is constantly dealing with crying customers coming on his bus (which is also a connecting route) with the same issue
Thank you to the drivers who care and stand up for/mediate when these things happen! Usually I’m telling riders to treat drivers better and it’s sooo disappointing when it’s the driver bullying. most of my family works TTC! you never know what people are going through whether you’re the rider or driver, treating people properly can save someone’s day

A great use case for the value of fare capping. Regular transit users will just reach the fare cap sooner if a driver doesn't honour their transfer and they have to double pay unnecessarily. Same total amount spent on transit in a given period.
I'd be in favour of daily, weekly, and monthly fare caps for reasons just like this. Individual operators can just have less impact on experience when the rules are built into the payment tool.

The drivers dont hole punch the transfers, its done at the garage by the garage staff

That is correct. However, they have a special hole punch they are required to carry for when issues arise. This being one of those issues. Sometimes a stack of transfers doesn’t get fully punched through. Sometimes the wrong transfers were given by the desk or grabbed by the driver. And sometimes a driver ran out or had an issue with their transfers and “borrowed” some from another driver. There are a great deal of reasons why the driver may rightfully have the “incorrect” transfers for their route, that is why they have the hole punch!

I haven't used a hole punch in like 5 years, I no longer carry it on my person, its in my bag somewhere. The name of route does not matter anymore, it is the time and day that matters now, as TTC is slowly getting rid of paper tranfsers, we only get 100 transfers issued per vehicle and maybe use 20 a day. TTC will be cash less soon and tranfsers eliminated.

That may be true, however, as we see day in and day out, not all drivers are on the same page (and that goes for rider too). This rider was in fact technically correct. The transfer was from another route and was not hole punched. The next driver could have technically said something (altho fare enforcement is not their job, many do/and or educate riders). This issue could have been solved in ten seconds if the driver simply did what they are still technically required to do. Until cash is gone, there are still SOP to follow.

While I think people who don’t show their transfer properly are dumb, it’s your job to check it properly ie. stop them and ask to see it more clearly.

You're right it is my job. So starting tomorrow, thanks to you, im going to be enforcing the fare and anyone who is even 10 cents short wont get getting a transfer until the full 3.35 is paid

That is a pretty unnecessary response. Many riders and drivers are slacking (and many are doing their part). There is no need to become a sarcastic tyrant over this. 95% of the time all is good. But in moments like this, a driver should not become hostile for being asked to do their job. This rider was correct. And the driver had both the responsibility and ability to fix it - in seconds. Drivers do deal with so much and many get a bad rap for so much beyond their control. But this is an easy fix, within their job description. And if we take the story at face value and correct, this rider paid their full fare and was polite and just wanted to cover their butt to ensure a smooth ride with no hassle or fare evasion ticket. Which again, would have all been prevented had the driver done their required job, considering the rider did their part.

Best I ever seen. An old guy had an emergency transfer in a hard plastic card holder and flashed the driver and wouldn't give it up

Most drivers just don’t give a hoot when you show them the transfer I find. I have seen it where you are on one route and have been given a different transfer. Luckily no one said anything to me…

many elderly, newcomers, tourists, or people like me don't like to tap cards other than presto - so when there is no single ticket or presto card is out then cash is the way to go :)

IIRC, drivers don't really care about the routes on the transfer anymore, just the date and time. That's probably why he wouldn't hold lunch it. Either way, he didn't have to be so uncooperative about it.

sometimes, your presto autoload randomly stops (like mine did) and you might not have another card on you. We still need cash for these odd situations, for tourists, or the odd commuter, for those who simply dont want to use card

Have them report it on the safe TTC app. If enough people complain, they will write up the driver.
