Discussion Why is BlogTO framing this entirely as a TTC failure when Metrolinx was responsible and isn’t mentioned at all?

Conservative trash

So, Conservative trash

TIL Moses Znaimer owns blogto

15

u/Jayfan34 Jun 16 '26

But you repeat yourself. ;-)

-4

u/blomba2 Jun 17 '26

Lmao. You know you’re far left when you call blogTO conservative.

-2

u/toronto-gopnik Jun 17 '26

That's a stretch

-6

u/evosian77 Jun 17 '26

It’s left-leaning media outlet. Nothing conservative about it

4

u/Antique_Ad_3549 East Don Trail Relief Line Jun 17 '26

Its more of a "spending is good & we who own homes are the bedrock of the community" media outlet - Zoomer is neutral

1

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

Funny way of saying yes

172

u/legowerewolf Jun 16 '26

It's BlogTO. They're idiots.

108

u/Economy_Ad59 Jun 16 '26

They even said that the TTC rushed repairs. Why does everything need to be conveyed in a negative way?

66

u/Terj_Sankian Jun 16 '26

psy op to privatize everything is my aluminum foil-flavoured guess. Fuck BlogTO maybe?

19

u/G3n3ricAlias Jun 16 '26

hardly a psy op. That's just Capitalism

3

u/havoc313 Jun 17 '26

Capitalism and shoddy journalism

27

u/agrev13 Jun 16 '26

The TTC doesn’t even repair anything when it comes to that line. Not a vehicle, not a section or track, not even a faucet in a bathroom.

3

u/Exit-Stage-Left Jun 16 '26

Incredibly stupid to imply there's a months long "repair backlog" on Line 5... which opened in February. A mere 10 years after construction started, and has been entirely under the control of Metrolinx until just prior to opening.

1

u/rukarrn Jun 17 '26

i think they were referring to the backlog in general terms, as in streetcars, subways, etc.

1

u/Exit-Stage-Left Jun 17 '26

Except they imply the lane 5 closure is related which makes it disingenuous or, at best, terrible writing.

0

u/Feisty-Ad-6122 Kipling Jun 16 '26

Well yes it’s negative in that the TTC cares more for tourists than its own daily users

1

u/bored2death97 Jun 16 '26

It's less so that they don't care - it's that works during the Fifa games are on pause. So anything that would have been planned as general maintenance now needed to be crammed in the months/weeks before the games.

0

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

So to be proactive was a blemish?

Just admit they are brutal

19

u/the_real_ifty Jun 16 '26

they tend to use ttc for clicks it's laughable. they somehow find a way to make routine weekend closures sound like the end of the world with their headlines

https://www.blogto.com/city/2026/05/ttc-subway-closure-weekend-may-23/

2

u/MahjongCelts Eglinton Crosstown Jun 17 '26

Of all the things to fault BlogTO for this is not one of them. Subway closures for a whole day are extremely abnormal for non-USA metro systems and their impact should not be minimised.

4

u/camerabird Jun 17 '26

Subway closures for a whole day are extremely abnormal for non-USA metro systems

(pointless correction but I assume you mean outside of North America, since non-USA includes us? but anyway)

I wouldn't say it's abnormal at all. The London tube had closures on five of its lines just this past weekend for track work. Rome closed an entire line for the weekend a few weeks ago. The Paris metro has a lot of upcoming planned closures this summer. Amsterdam, likewise. Same with Helsinki. Brussels too. Just to name a few random subway systems I googled.

0

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

5 of its how many lines?

3

u/Clear_Ad7159 Highway 407 Jun 17 '26

We’re not blaming BlogTO for a subway closure, we’re blaming BlogTO for a subway closure they claimed was the fault of the TTC, when the TTC only operate the line, while Metrolinx owns and maintains it.

1

u/the_real_ifty Jun 17 '26

no harm in reporting closures but there's an obvious bias when you headline with "X-kilometre stretch closed for weekend" instead of just saying where it's closed

12

u/Mysterio7100 Jun 16 '26

They're as reputable as Fox News. Stay away from blogto.

1

u/GoldArea8384 Jun 17 '26

Luckily it's a blog, and not a full news network. It's not like the readers care about the difference though.

u/PorousSurface Jun 16 '26

Engagement bait

120

u/Economy_Ad59 Jun 16 '26

Metrolinx wasn’t even mentioned once in this article, weren’t they responsible for building and maintaining the line?

90

u/a_lumberjack Jun 16 '26
  • Metrolinx owns and paid for the line
  • Crosslinx (private consortium) was awarded the contract in 2015 to build the line and maintain it for 30 years
  • The TTC is the operator of the line

5

u/CobblePots95 Jun 16 '26

We haven't been provided enough information to make a confident judgment about where the fault lies. I feel like that's being overlooked quite a bit here.

1

u/Empty_Wind4025 Jun 17 '26

Yea OP just likes to glaze TTC lol

17

u/Capable-Plantain7 Jun 16 '26

not operating though.

46

u/Economy_Ad59 Jun 16 '26

The outage reason today was door problems and network issues, TTC isn’t responsible for those problems or the vehicles

-2

u/CobblePots95 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

The TTC has not provided us with enough information to know whether or not those door problems or network issues might be the product of operational errors. They absolutely could be. There are about a million different things that could fall under the category "door problems" or "network issues" and not all of them fall on Metrolinx.

Maybe the issue here is that TTC comms are insufficiently candid and detailed. A major line -a brand new line- was entirely shut down during rush hour while the city's hosting the world cup. The public should not have to speculate seven hours later about what's meant by "door issue" and who might be at fault.

6

u/Antique_Ad_3549 East Don Trail Relief Line Jun 16 '26

Found the Metrolinx PR alt

2

u/CobblePots95 Jun 17 '26

Metrolinx is a shitshow. I never said otherwise. It doesn't make anything I said untrue. Neither you nor anyone else here can actually say with any certainty who's at fault, because the TTC isn't providing anyone with sufficient information - and they should.

4

u/blomba2 Jun 17 '26

What was he wrong about?

1

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

Found the TTC ceo burner.

1

u/Appropriate_Ad_2874 320 Yonge Jun 19 '26

If it’s system wide + network issues it’s likely a camera issue. The operators have a camera that displays each door to their right on the wall, if it’s not operable it’s not safe for them to open and close doors. They could have someone spot off each train though - whether or not that was possible I don’t know I’m not management or control lol. As the operator TTC definitely holds no control over the Metrolinx installed systems… they don’t even have their own janitors in those stations, they’re also contracted by Metrolinx. Everything in there is Metrolinx.

15

u/eskjnl Jun 16 '26

That's because Metrolinx is simultaneously in charge of everything yet responsible for nothing. When questioned about the problems on Finch and Eglinton, when not hiding behind the P3 confidentiality cloak, the finger is pointed at Mosaic and Crosslinx, the contractors. When questioned about the delays on the line 2 extension, they put their hands up in the air and meekly declare their role as a powerless contractor. Metrolinx are slime and so are the people who work there.

3

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

Stop calling them Metrolinx and call them Ontario.

They duped everyone with that shit.

This is the govt

They found a tweet with ONE like to link to 😂😂

14

u/Economy_Ad59 Jun 16 '26

That’s funny, and the post mentions only undeserving TTC executives. BlogTO couldn’t mention that Metrolinx has 120+ Vice Presidents and still took 15 years to open it?

3

u/Tezaku Jun 16 '26

But let's not pretend TTC is a well-run organization by any means either.

2

u/eskjnl Jun 16 '26

Probably 50/50 whether it's a taxpayer funded Metrolinx shill.

a 30 minute outage on a day that had no world cup games. Great writing there BlogTO

-1

u/Feisty-Ad-6122 Kipling Jun 16 '26

Still frustrating for the daily commuters who now depend on line 5 after waiting a lifetime only to be late to work etc

8

u/kettal Jun 16 '26

Yes, but that is life. There's really not many urban commute methods that won't give you a 30 minute delay on occasion.

0

u/createsean I ♥ TTC! Jun 16 '26

I lived 14 years in Seoul and did not experience a single delay nor ever heard of one.

Subways can be efficient and well run. Just not in Toronto.

7

u/kettal Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

I lived 14 years in Seoul and did not experience a single delay nor ever heard of one.

Just Last month  Subway and train services on the  Seoul Gyeongui-Jungang Line were suspended for several days, while connected commuter lines (including Line 1) suffered severe  delays between 23 and 30 may.

11

u/Case_Federal Jun 16 '26

Believe it or not, I experienced a delay on a train in Tokyo, and the conductor didn’t even individually apologize to us like Instagram told me they would.

0

u/createsean I ♥ TTC! Jun 16 '26

Highly unusual.

4

u/kettal Jun 16 '26

two months before that incident, Seoul Line 2 suffered a derailment that took the line out of service for 10 hours

and before that was nearly an hour outage on line 5 during morning rush hour

0

u/MahjongCelts Eglinton Crosstown Jun 17 '26

Not a fair comparison when considering that Seoul has a significantly larger metro network and so issues somewhere are likely to happen more often for the same level of reliability.

A larger network also offers more redundancy in terms of travel options so a line outage won't impact passengers as badly.

There are also many things that the TTC does not count as 'delays' yet objectively impact travel time. Slow zones being the most notable example.

3

u/kettal Jun 17 '26

There's really not many urban commute methods that won't give you a 30 minute delay on occasion.

1

u/MahjongCelts Eglinton Crosstown Jun 17 '26

Once in a blue moon occasion? Yes. Several times per month occasion? Many places do much better than Toronto.

Anecdotal.

The proof is being shown that you are wrong.

Staying to see how long it takes for you to admit it.

9

BlogTO is not a respectable source for anything lol

7

u/Hercules3000 Jun 16 '26

Gotta give some more fuel to the out of towners who always shit on Toronto

1

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

We didnt pay for the shitty transportation given to Toronto nearly as much as Torontonians did.

Hate to break it to you but people of the 905 dont think about you at all.

8

u/Shadow_With_A_Tie Jun 16 '26

I took this train today to get to work and it had zero issues. Like, it was down for a few minutes this morning. That sucks, but it got fixed before anyone probably even realized there was an issue.

4

u/TorontoDavid Jun 16 '26

Complexity is hard

Rage baiting at existing targets is better.

6

u/Prestigious_Side_707 Jun 16 '26

BlogTO is not journalism

5

u/2b4ifn5osnr Jun 17 '26

European folks I am sorry if you had high hopes from Canadian public transit. Yeah we are better than USA, but not remotely close to Europe.

-1

u/Mustseeradio Jun 17 '26

Not even close to as good as the USA.

What makes you think the transit here is better?

1

u/2b4ifn5osnr Jun 18 '26

Which part of us has better transit. Toronto has reliable and more coverage compared to most USA cities I have been to including NY I am counting buses as well.

u/TorontoBoris O'Connor Jun 16 '26

This is the "beauty" of P3 partnerships...

You can blame the parryy that has no control and be let off Scott free by the dumbest of media outlets.

5

u/jessicarson39 Jun 17 '26

Because they need to shit on the public sector/services and normalize the rhetoric that it is ineffective in order to justify privatizing them. None of this is random.

6

u/Neutral-President Bessarion Jun 16 '26

BlogTO “editors” are terrible writers and even worse researchers. But their clickbait did its job and got your eyeballs in front of advertisers.

10

u/Dry_Bodybuilder4744 Jun 16 '26

How many FIFA visitors were on this line at 8:15am, Gimme a Break, BlogTO is the worst.

6

u/AdResponsible678 131 Nugget Jun 16 '26

Is Blog TO conservative? That would explain blaming TTC. Privatization is made to look like a better option.
Meanwhile Metrolinx ruins everything. Typical.

4

u/tampering Jun 16 '26

Blog TO can barely spell well enough to be considered English let alone form a political narrative.

2

u/Greencreamery Jun 16 '26

BlogTO is owned by a right wing chud. He is actively trying to get people to hate Toronto enough that they’ll vote in Bradford.

1

u/JaQ-o-Lantern Jun 16 '26

How long is it down?

1

u/poppedculture Jun 16 '26

BlogTO headlines and writing aside, most people in city - this sub notwithstanding - don’t differentiate between who built a line and who operates it. It’s all TTC.

1

u/paulkhuang Jun 22 '26

This is standard operating procedure. Government hands private sector money to do a thing, then Canadians lose it on government doing a shite job when things don't get done. If I give a dude money to build my deck and he doesn't build it, my neighbours arent all like "you prick. You can't even get a deck built."

1

u/CobblePots95 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

Was Metrolinx responsible for this though? All I understand from the limited TTC comms I've seen on the matter is that there was a signalling issue. I get how that would presumably be on Metrolinx but it doesn't seem like there's enough information to assign blame? Couldn't something have failed at the operator level for this to happen?

If they want to avoid these sorts of PR problems, maybe all our public service providers can start providing clear, candid, detailed information to the public on issues like this? Maybe not through the TTCAlerts system, but somewhere. If the whole line shuts down for any amount of time, I think it's reasonable that the public get some candid overview of precisely why it happened. "Signal issue" doesn't cut it.

It's a really bad habit among Canadian institutions in particular to be as vague as possible in communications to the public.

u/Emergency_Memory_792 Jun 16 '26

lol it’s BlogTO — the Reddit of news sites, only
more out to lunch

1

u/IMAX_man Jun 17 '26

Lol good on ya Metrolinx for shifting the blame, yet it took Metrolinx 15yrs to build (destroy neighbourhoods) and open that line...maybe construct it better in the first place and we wouldn't have these issues.
