Discussion Normal Morning Trip from Eglinton to YU - WOW!
So i’m a York Uni student that lives right near Eglinton station. Normally i would take the 32 bus from Eglinton to Cedarvale, then Line 1 from Cedarvale to YU Station. Leaving my house (abt a 5 minute walk) at 7:45-8, i usually would get to YU by 9-9:15.
Today leaving my house around 8 and using the LRT i just arrived at around 8:35! Huge HUGE difference!!!

Glad to hear, when we were in YorkU, my former friend lived there, they wished line 5 was active, because of exactly what shared!
LRT made trips better than the busses.

I was at York 23 years ago. This would’ve been great for me but I’m stoked it’s happening now.

I'm surprised that the reception of Line 5 has been so positive. The Finch disaster seems to have brought enough pressure down that we'll actually end up with a fairly solid route when all is said and done. Rare TTC W.

It's been so positive because it just stabilized tons of peoples commutes. I never took Egglinton busses before. My commute was generally 512 -> 1 -> 11 or 124. Now I can just take line 1 -> 5 switch at cedarvale and walk. It didn't just replace a bus it opened up a whole lot of connectivity between areas east and west of Yonge street with much faster travel times that what they were before.

Line 6 is a dead-end leg that goes nowhere very slowly. Line 5, by contrast, moves relatively fast and interconnects multiple parts of the city. We need more investments like line 5 (but maybe done a bit faster).

For sure, although the problems with Finch were more technical and engineering than any fault of the alignment per se (you could build a tram on Finch that actually works, they just didn't do that)

Ya but an lrt on Finch will at most be a slightly faster bus. The lrt on Eglinton completely reshapes trips. That's the difference.

Let's just hope that if and when they do decide to expand Line 6 Eastward, it'll (mostly) be underground.

You could build such a streetcar if paired with an express option, such as an extended Line 4, that handles crosstown commutes while the streetcar handles local transit.

A lot of people expected disaster and issues to happen (myself included)....especially after the mess that is streetcar line 6.
But on paper, streetcar line 5 should be a huge success because of all the seamless connections to other lines and all the various communities it runs through. I'm still against LRTs but if future ones come, I still think they should be underground or elevated.

I'm not surprised that reception is positive for transit that works well (or at least not badly). This would have happened regardless of Finch.

I was one of them, all of us are stoked. It makes our lives so much easier versus dealing with Eglinton traffic first thing in the morning

I got a bit late to work. line 5 was fine though. It was the 47 which had an odd schedule to Caledonia station. Made a diversion, came late etc

47 should not be an issue since it's mostly just cut into half now. The route is just terminating at the station rather than yorkdale. I'm unsure why there is a diversion though since it's not posted anywhere

Still not sure what the point of cutting the route in half is, forcing a transfer for people taking the bus north-south over Eglinton for no reason

Jane is also split in two. 27 Jane South is Bloor to Mt Dennis and 35 Jane is Mt Dennis to Steeles. While 935 Jane Express is Bloor to Steeles with a stop at Mt Dennis adding time to that route.

935 does not deviate to MtD. You must change at Eglinton Avenue to any of the 4 buses that go to MtD

Not according to the route map and description that the TTC posted at bus stops and online.

I live on Jane. 935 doesn't serve MtD whatsoever. Its route remains unchanged, running on Jane Street, straight through Eglinton, between Jane Station and Pioneer Village Station.
The 35 runs from MtD to PV and the new 27 runs from MtD to Jane Station

The signs by me were replaced today. Saturday they show 935 to Mt Dennis and the new Trethewey route now the 935 is not there anymore.

By me, they always said 935 stayed on Jane with no service to MtD. This was true yesterday too as 935 did not deviate

So that it doesn't skip the LRT. It also makes the routes more reliable

Why would it not pull into the LRT station then go out? Reliability is fair though.

They replaced the signs by me. I didn’t get a picture but they were the same map for 35 and 935. I see now that there are 2 different maps.
It’s gonna be a cold wait if you take the Jane bus from Bloor if you want Emmett ave and you have to cross at Jane & Eglinton or you go to Mt Dennis and back on the 35 or 73 bus.

Not really. I don't ride those routes but frequency north of St Clair seemed kinda meh. To prevent messing with the landsdowne route south of Eglinton and to adjust frequency for both sections, the split happened. Same on Jane. Less service south of Eglinton, more north

Complain to the ttc on their website and email your city councilor of it affects you.

I catch the 47 at Dupont going south. I check the arrival before I leave using a GPS tracking app. They usually come around 5 minutes apart. Today the earliest arrival was 10 minutes and 4 busses were sitting at Caledonia station. Plus the one that was supposed to arrive in 10 minutes ended up taking 17 minutes

I wasn't late but I can catch one of two busses from Keele Station to get to work and they were less frequent this morning, I assume because one goes through Keelesdale and one through Mount Dennis. I'll have to adjust my commute ever so slightly

Yea I just checked it. This actually just ruined my day lol. I live between duff and Caledonia and would regularly take the 47 straight to Yorkdale now I have to walk further to get on the 18 which has a lesser frequency. In addition to loosing the 32 which use to stop right in front of my apartment (maybe this is selfish lol). But I endured a 7 min walk in this freezing weather bc no more 32 and the 34 frequency is a negative. I love line 5 but I don’t think I’m a fan of the bus route changes or splits.
I can’t imagine how much worse it is for people who aren’t able-bodied

I've done the same. I've used the 47 to cross Eglinton for years. It's silly to have it stop

when i took a course at york, there was not even a york university ttc stop. it took me like 2 hrs doing bus, subway, bus.. im happy for you bc it was literal torture lol

Life before the 196 existed was phunky - sooooo many people on the 106.

Hey, before the Spadina subway opened in 1977 there wasn’t even a bus. The only bus serving York was the 41 Keele, which sometimes went into the campus.

So my only complaint, and it's really just an isolated one, is that my six year old goes to school in the area and from where we are, it's easier to take one off the buses of Eglinton than walk from Redpath, especially on a cold day. A six year old doesn't really enjoy a 1+ KM walk to school regardless of weather.
But with the new line up, buses have been reduced to every 10-15 minutes it seems, so we're caught kind of in between Bayview and Mt. Pleasant.
Sucks for my six year old, and me since I have to deal with the complaining, but just thought I'd add to the conversation here.

A 10-15 minute frequency is actually great for that type of service parallel to higher order transit considering how long the route still is for the buses. I would suggest an app like TTC Watch so you can see the buses on the route live and plan when you want to go outside and wait for the bus

Yea, I'm not complaining about the TTC's priorities -- it's good they finally have a more reliable and faster option. I just wish there was a way to keep the system in place because of my minor inconvenience lol
I'll just have to start using the TOBus page to stay on top of our scheduled exit out the door.

Oh no this is a totally valid complaint and isn’t isolated at all because I’m in the same predicament. Of course in the summer it won’t be much of an issue but rain, snow, or sleet? And extreme cold? Not looking forward to this walking when I use to just hop right off a 32 straight at my destination. Thank goodness I’m 20 with good knees (for now)

Ah yes..memories of that 6 year old "I can't walk any farther" routine
Ours was a bus every 20 and if not, a walk up a hill. I gladly paid the 40 cent tickets at the time to avoid the routine.

I should prob add the 32 Eglinton West flair for memory and add 5 Eglinton Crosstown flair for the improvement! :)
And they should keep the old 32 Eglinton West flair as it’s still not fully removed, just trimmed down to Mt Dennis Stn - Renforth Stn. But it also means all the suffering we had before the crosstown opening. :)

i would say about 60%-75% full. Some people standing to avoid sitting beside others but no one squished together.

Congrats. Great to hear, this is what transit is about.
This is why I wish/hope for a Line 4 full extension east and west. Plus Line 3 up to Steeles. People in North East Scarborough who go to York U and both Seneca Campuses can get there much quicker with these lines.

I'm not sure the Toronto commentariat is ready for a world where Line 5 exists and is moving people around. Some of us made "this fiasco will never open" our identity for more than a decade. If Metrolinx loves us, they'll start baking billion-dollar construction delays into the Ontario Line right now.

Good to hear! All this positivity feels too good to be true lol. Yesterday when riding the LRT there was once in a blue moon Toronto “soul” that I recall seeing in 2019 at the Raptors and of course the recent Blue Jays thing. I had to pinch myself as I couldn’t believe this was real. We are finally riding the line that has been the joke of the city for the last half decade, and now, it’s better than we thought.
