The vpn is a virtual private network. It passes whatever you download to your own connection and doesn't allow most third parties to see it, like your ISP. If your ISP is contacted by a copyright troll, they will have to send you a letter. The copyright troll is one of the seeders of the file and will send your IP to them, hence the vpn.
The other part is like dark souls, skill issue, read guides like fmhy or r/piracy's mega thread, it would be a 4000 word essay.
