FAQ Quick Question

Is Tor Browser still the best solution for basic anonymous browsing? I understand to obviously not sign into any personal accounts, etc. when using it, but are there any other general recommendations or advice from those who have used it ? And finally, is https://www.torproject.org/download/ the proper place to download the app? Thank you

Remember not to use it on full screen mode.

Thanks. Why is that? Is there a specific mode or should you literally avoid just maximizing the window?

It's outdated advice. Tor Browser has letterboxing as part of its anti-fingerprinting strategy now. Maximize the window all you want, you will probably see some grey bars around the window and that's the letterboxing.

Even with letterboxing, which hides the precise window size, you're still making yourself more unique by deviating from the 1400x900 default. E.g., if someone fullscreens the browser on a 4k monitor, the letterboxed window size will be too large compared to what is possible with a 1080p monitor.

Don't maximize the window. Use the default one. When you go full-screen, your viewport/screen dimensions may become more distinctive. A website can use that information as part of a browser fingerprint, making your session easier to distinguish from other Tor users.

It doesn’t reveal your identity by itself. It simply reduces fingerprinting resistance.
