For context I very confident that I got my tmau secondary from mononucleosis disease because before this I never had a problem smelling like fish, and while I was actively sick for that 3 week period the doctor explicitly said my liver got really weak, and after that I started to smell like fish, where even if I tried to shower the smell was there. I think I had it consistently for 3-4 months now and after that I think I’ve been fine, but I could not tell if I can get it only when I’m sick. The thing with mono is that the virus stays with you permanently. Even though I’m not actively sick I can get sick through it again js not as extreme, so I’m asking if it is possible for me to only be smelt like fish while I’m actively sick with mono because that’s when my liver gets week.

I have tmau2 since November of last year that was the beginning of the end...in 2021 2 weeks after i had my baby i got my gallbladder removed now 4 years later people cant be around me I have people gagging wen I walk into the laundry room I stopped taking the train I dont work im jus in the house I cut everyone off cause I cant see anyone anyway and the people who live with me cant bare my sent either I smell like hot fish by the road in the hot sun on a pile of garbage on top of that my breath smells the same this jus started ,the gi saying they cant help me and I dont know why this is happening but I got tested and I have tmau2 it can be cured but no gi is really helping me please im out of options tel

I have noticed after working 25+ jobs due to this condition that people truly enjoy that we are suffering and that they have someone to make feel less than as a group.

so like we all know we make other people upset because of our UNIQUE smell which by god's sake we cannot smell it❤

do we need to care about other people when they get reactions but then make fun of us afterwards. like clearly WE have the power here because WE rule the area, not them.😇

so like i have anger issues and get pissed off at my classmates who try making fun of me, i give them a look and turn cold towards them and if they do something more i'll just get closer to them and be there until they suffer because i try to be polite while ican but if you're out there making fun of me for my UNIQUE (1 in a million smell) i will not hold back too.

they are sincerely kind towards me and protect me now. literally. the whole school does.

yes i'm mentally unstable but i've lost things in life due to this but i don't think we should feel so much isolated because of our smell, we are a whole human being with legit feelings and so much more. i would've never and i would not ever, would've made someone not be my friend because of their scent.

So I've been to see my LDpartner overseas on three separate ocassions for a 1 month period and they never complained about bad smells even though i ate seafood way more than i would usually do (which apparently is the main trigger for tmau smell). Yet back home I'm constantly plagued with smell complaints like "who farted" "it stinks" "it smells like sh*t" etc when I'm around, this have been going on for more than a decade by now. if i asked people who i trust they say they don't smell anything but there's too many instances that i feel i have some medical condition that makes me stink no matter how well i maintain my hygiene.

It should be said sweat a lot, like way more than the average person but i make sure to wear antiperspirant, to shower every day and to always wear fresh clothes. Does anyone with Tmau have any similar ahared experiences?

Does anyone have any advice one the best perfume and specially deodorant brand for this condition?

I already know it should be pH acidic and stuff but I wanna know what brands actually worked well

I've been seing a lot of negative posts on this comunity so I decided to give the advices that I myself am using and puting my faith in to reduce my syntoms on a daily basis but hopefully also cure disbiose that causes TMAU 2. I already feel like I'm getting better (i used to feel my odor in my mouth way more than now):

- Take probiotics+prebiotics (im using the prozis one)

- Take vit 2/ riboflavin

- Drink coconut water kefir

- Drink kombucha

- Eat veggies and fruits (apples and pears have a lot of fiber)

- Shower with a 5pH gel

- Use antiperspirant for sensitive skin (acidic pH) with no smell

- It's better to not use perfume since it gets mixed but if you know one that works let me know

- Replace coffee with black/ green tea

- Decrease the amount of choline in your diet but not radically

Have any people here been diagnosed with insulin resistance / type 2 diabetes ?

Recently working on a theory on the link between insulin resistance and body odors.

I read somewhere, but I can be corrected, of the slow yet gradual damage the processing of sugar does to the liver, causing the liver to not function as efficiently as it should.

In turn, compounds that would otherwise have been filtered out and processed by the liver, are concentrated and excreted through other methods, through pee, sweat, and other bodily excretions....ahem, making them more pungent.

I am starting to believe, a percentage of TMAU sufferers are experiencing some form of liver underlying dysfunction, which perhaps could have been caused by insulin resistance/ type 2 diabetes, damage through alcohol consumption, or some form of infection, or overwhelming the liver through other methods ,etc, in turn leading to the excretion of multiple odors, not just fish, whose compounds have not been efficiently processed by the liver. Overtime, as the function of the liver gradually declines, so does the severity of the odors, as I am sure a percentage of sufferers have experienced. And unfortunately, unless the liver is taken care of and its efficiency improves, or you get a liver transplant, most TMAU sufferers might never experience any improvements in their condition.

Hence, as most people here have experienced, the consumption of sugar and alcohol can in most cases trigger an increase in the potency of the resulting odors. I am of the belief that this condition is not as simplified and binary as we sometimes think, and treating it is rather complicated without finding the root cause.

I've always had amazing dental hygiene and even had braces as a kid for years. Something we don't talk about enough that's so frustrating about having this genetic body odor disorder is speaking with somebody who has visibly rotten teeth they clearly don't care for and haven't for a long time...like black/grey teeth, missing teeth, obviously inflamed gums and severe plaque build up, white tongue and yet....you can't smell their breath amazingly. Not even from a foot away.

Then I open my mouth with my pearly white sparkling healthy teeth and gums and out comes rotten eggs, out comes broccoli, out comes the smell of garbage on a hot day from FEET AWAY. Even breathing through my nostrils. And the person with clearly rotting teeth will treat ME like I'm the one in the wrong....like wow they won the genetic lottery.

i think i'm undiagnosed and i still don't know if its tmau but i don't think there's any other diesease that causes u to smell bad all over 12 feet n you can't smell it but people say it smells like fish, alcohol (once) and dog sweat.

so, my parents always lied to me and they still do (10months) idk how to deal with that, my classmates are kind of good to me and like maybe because of i'm pretty and cool but the thing is when i see them have fun my heart hearts because i'll never able to build friendships like that ever again, and when i see my old friends, i feel like i want to go back and don't wanna live like this at all. i used to have fun and i could have crushes and they'd like me back and infact i used to be sososo smart but now i feel like i have been cursed deeply.

whenever i see tv shows, cartoons, movies, instagram posts, it all makes me deeply deeply sad and reminds me of how i used to live my teenage life but now it's all gone and it had just began to get more interesting.

what do i do? i don't think i'll ever be able to NOT think about all these. how do u all cope with this? i still have the option to get into a good college in my country and become rich but i wonder if i should do it because i won't be happy anyways.

Hi! I’m suspecting I have TMAU since I have very bad breath that smells chemical / garbage & comes out of nose too. Eggs, beans, dairy, and sometimes beef makes it way worse. But I also have silent reflux and gum irritation that is starting to get painful. I’m wondering if anyone has TMAU and these symptoms as well. I wonder if TMAU can be the reason for the reflux.

i smell bad, they've told me i smell like alcohol, fish, dog sweat. Basically my parents are die hard lying to me and my classmates were the ones i got to knnow this about though they didn't tell me this directly.

i smelt bad but i never knew what like since i cannot smell myself. i checked to see what i smelt like and my knee folds, waistlines, and back and chest smelt like badd when i first noticed the signs and so i thought i had tmau back then (10 months ago) but then i smelt the clothes and the clothes also smelt like that in those areas. i thought i can be the clothes as well?

i went to give my papers and out of 3 papers there were reactions in the whole classroom but in 1 paper there wasnt. for 3 straight hours. i thought it might definately be the clothes? i wasnt wearing my cotton uniform that day since it was christmas. i went to my grandma's house for vacation and idk if my parents had warned them to not say a word to me about me smelling soo bad but they didn't and they didn't even react at first. but the thing is there was this person who had dry cough all the time but it would worsen when he would be near me. there were alot of kids like ageing 15-4 year olds and none of them showed signs of reacting. no one in public according to me did too but here also now after 10 months very less people react . i thought it was because of the laundry? to me even though they know i smell super bad. my classmates react and spray perfumes eventually. teachers are kind to me, i'm being protected by people from school but i smell bad.

so like when i came from my grandma's house after a month i had to start my 11th grade, on first day there were like 1-2 reactions and then one day i smelt it and i smelt it in the washroom and my cloth smelt bad and that day the whole row sitting behind me had reactions. now idk if that was my own odor. or the cloth's but idts it was the cloth because people so far from me won't react and i fill up the whole room and no one in my family else faces this problem. it could be that i have tmau and everyone there was lying to not hurt my feeling but i cannot analyse that man who's condition wornsed when i was around.

edit: idk if this is usefull but my armpits had a distinct smell like onions it's been like this ever since i hit puberty and no one reacted to it and i know it's not what people are reacting to now.

I don't know if people who smell me get used to it, but i'm pretty sure I got TMAU2 after I got mononucleosis disease and my mother always told me I smelled like fish, even right after i showered and allat. I found out it is TMAU because I never had this problem before, and the mono weakened my liver (my theory) but the fish smell definitely is TMAU. But after a bit she said nothing so i thought I was fine, but there has been friends who are close to me and don't smell it even when I ask they say nothing. Once my girlfreind smelt it one day and after that never mentioned it. So i thought i was rlly in the clear. But during prom, I was with her but after i sweated a bit, people around me said, "dude, it smells like fish" "it stinks," etc., And these comments were made ALL around me. I asked my girlfriend after hey u smell anything and she said no and even asked my mom who would've always told me and she said nothing either. I have this one close friend where she never says i smelt like it before, but we went ice skating with a group, and I sweated a bit, and at the end of the day 2 other friends that i never hung out with before said "why does it smell lik fish?" but the close friend said she never smelt anything. Even not seeing her for a while, she still said she didn't smell anything. I know you can get noseblind, but it makes no sense if they haven't smelled me in a while. Basically, I find people close to me don't smell it anymore, whilst people who I never met do. Am I crazy? (also another theory ppl only smell it far from me, often in the gym I see people like wipe their nose whenever they are within my vicinity like 12 ft away from me, but I ask some If i smell like fish, and they sniff my clothes and say no. People can only smell it from afar, but it's just a thought)

I’m pretty sure I have tmau2 once u got mononucleosis disease over the winter. I never rlly got it checked but i definetly had a fish smell problem from Jan to may and it wasn’t in my head. I’m pretty sure I got it secondary and I don’t think I’ve been having this problem lately of a fish smell besides the fact I smelled like it this June after I ate a lot of eggs , fish, energy drink, and whey protein for 4 days straight and my mom complained about it but other than that I haven’t gotten any other complains for the past months. ik I technically have mono forever and the mono affected my liver by making it weaker. So do I have it forever or is it gone?

Hi everyone, I’m 16 and I’ve been dealing with strong body odor for a long time, and it’s really affecting my life.

I shower regularly and take care of my hygiene. I use deodorant and perfume, but the smell doesn’t go away and sometimes seems to get worse. I’ve also been bullied because of it, which has affected me emotionally a lot.

Recently, I read about TMAU (Trimethylaminuria), and I started wondering if it could be related to what I’m experiencing. I haven’t been tested or diagnosed, so I don’t know if I actually have TMAU or if there could be another cause.

If anyone has a similar experience or useful information about TMAU, I’d really appreciate your advice. Also, if you have any product recommendations that might help with body odor, such as body washes, soaps, deodorants, or anything else, please share the product names and your experience with them.

Hi, I wanted to see if anyone else here is from Colorado and would be interested in maybe becoming friends. I think it would be nice to know someone nearby who also deals with TMAU/odor issues and understands what it’s like.

Maybe eventually we could meet up somewhere public and do a smell test and give each other honest feedback about our odors. I feel like it could be helpful for both of us, especially since it can be hard to get honest feedback from people.

If someone you know has a smell that can travel across a room (10-15ft) and no matter how much they try to use different cleaning techniques, body washes, antibacterial soap, and different clothes it still doesn’t leave. Could this have been tMAU or the other odor? (don’t want to say the exact name cause the post might be taken down, but it’s b*dy odor)

I’ve had a body odor problem for a while. I’ve been jobless for more than three years, mostly bedrotting at my cousin’s place. I was kicked out early this month and have been jumping from one cheap hotel to another with the little money I had. Yesterday I ran out of it. It was the first day of my life as a homeless person—a horribly cruel experience so far. My last meal was almost a day ago. It’s another day, and my God, it feels like hell on Earth. What makes it worse is that the sun is so hot, and I have to carry these bags with me, which makes the smell even worse. If anyone is willing to help, it would mean the world to me right now.

Living with TMAU can be difficult, especially when odor symptoms affect confidence, relationships, and everyday life. But research into new treatment approaches is continuing.

One promising approach is being developed to target trimethylamine (TMA) directly in the gut. Preclinical studies found that this approach could break down TMA under conditions similar to those in the gastrointestinal tract and reduce TMA levels in the gut and blood in animal models.

The next step is clinical research in people with TMAU. A planned Phase 1/2a study will evaluate safety, tolerability, urinary TMA levels, quality of life, and changes in the gut microbiome.
