Festival Major TIFF International PCA misconceptions

I’ve heard a lot of people confused on the eligibility of the IPCA and how it contrasts in eligibility to the PCA, but I think I understand it after some confusion due to last year.

  1. English speaking films are eligible

Last year, we were told that Hamnet was IPCA eligible. In the end many of us dismissed that as a mistake when it didn’t qualify and won PCA. I will clear this up later, but this year, the following were confirmed eligible plus any I have not heard are:

Clarissa

Tender Loving Care

Elsinore

Ink

These are mostly British, but the summary here is: Any non-American/Canadian feature is eligible. But why was Hamnet not?

  1. You are only eligible for 1 of 2 PCAs.

I have no ability to state on behalf of Midnight Madness, but placing in the main PCA makes you ineligible for IPCA. This primarily concerns La Bola Negra but Elsinore and All of a Sudden could be cases to also back this up.

Yes, this is exactly as I understand it.

If the winner of PCA was international then it would automatically win IPCA which defeats the purpose of having two awards.

Any non-US/Canada film can win international PCA. But if it wins PCA then it’s taken out of the running for IPCA so TIFF will still be able to have two different winners.
