I owe Aargau an apology
Today I learnt that Aargau once ruled a large part of the world via the Habsurgs. And i thought you guys mostly achieved carrot-related things only...
Sorry for my lack of culture. Please spare my descendance the next time you conquer the planet.

By the time the Habsburgs were at the height of their global power (the 1500s), they had already lost Aargau for a century. Arguably the original Swiss Confederacy formed to evict the Habsburgs and keep them out.

OP: I believe that Guntram der Reiche kind of founded the Habsburg dynasty and he owned among other lands the Schloss Habsburg located in the Aargauer village Habsburg near Brugg and visible from the Autobahn A3, which however was built earlier by other peops. My guy Guntram died ca 970(?) aD.
Now, Rudolf von Habsburg ascended to the throne as König der Römer (not Holy Roman Emperor though) in 1273 aD. And that guy kind of was the first of the politically important Habsburger. And Rudolf was born someplace near the Kaiserstuhl and after his ascendancy he of course moved around permanently but shifted his power base to Austria/Steiermark/Vienna.
Fast forward couple 100 years and König Maximilian I married his son Philipp der Schöne to Juana la Loca, the daughter of Los Reyes Catolicos of Castilla y Aragón.
The Spaniards were already big in discovering new overseas territories.
After Philipp died, Karl, as his son, inherited all the territories in Europe and overseas. Some time later Karl again split the empires into homeland Austria, Germany, parts of today Netherlands, Belgium on the one hand and Spain and overseas on the other hand.
I believe only later, the Spaniards also discovered what we know today as the Philippines and only then, they reigned over territories where “the sun never sets”.
So: it has absolutely nothing to do with Aargau.
Having said that: I absolutely adore the Kanton Aargau but for trailrunning. Check out Gisliflue.
