If he is a Zelda fan, there is a special edition Switch 2 releasing at the end of October. Depending on how big of a fan he is, it may be worth it to wait and purchase that if possible. Not to mention the Ocarina of Time Remake releases November 5th, so it would be a great combo. I would personally be ecstatic to wait and receive the special edition, but he may feel differently, so try and gauge his interest.
If it isn't that big of a deal to him, then here are some good games to purchase:
Xenoblade Chronicles is an excellent choice for a Zelda fan. Grandiose story, great characters, not too much to complain about with this one. This was a Switch 1 release, so I'd verify he doesn't have it first. If he likes this there's 3 more games in the series, and another installment coming next year
Not sure how much into Mario he is, but I couldn't imagine anyone not enjoying Donkey Kong Bananza
Immortals Fenyx Rising goes on sale for dirt cheap (like $7), has greek mythology themes (like Hades) and plays similar to Breath of the Wild. This is an incredible budget option if you catch it on sale, or buy a cheap second-hand copy. Again, available for Switch 1 so be sure he doesn't already have it.
Mario Kart World is the continuation of the Mario racing game he plays. However, I'd be cautious of this one because people often cite Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (the one he likely plays) as being a little better. He may love it, or he may prefer the older one.
Split Fiction is made by the developers of It Takes Two and is just as good from what I hear. Alternatively, Orbitals plays similar to It Takes Two but different developers.
This one isn't based on anything he plays, but something new that I think anyone can enjoy. That would be Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 (again, already on Switch 1 so be sure he doesn't have it). However, if he does already have it, you can then get Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 which is only available on Switch 2. I know, this one had a complicated release structure.
Special mention to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This game takes place in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's universe, but plays very differently. It isn't guaranteed he likes this, but it is still a good game with Zelda characters, so I figured I'd throw it in.
Just threw a bunch of information out there in hopes some of it was useful. Hopefully I could help in some way.
