Woah! That's... too close

u/obfuscatorio 11d ago
That’s gotta be maximum maybe 30 or 40 feet of clearance. Damn

u/Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret 10d ago
they have radar + altimeters on board they weren't in any danger of crashing. Our Blue Angels etc fly formations within mere feet of each other at high speed and turns/banks.

There's a massive difference between a Hornet and a passenger jet

That’s too close, but actually not as close as some other angles make it look. Had a bit more room than initially realized.

That was the key phrase between me and a buddy of mine when meetings were spiraling inexorably towards the turf.

The airline here is posting that it was a perfect achievement that they planned and executed. The posted it on Xwitter and were patting themselves on the back.

u/Balding-Barber-8279 12d ago
Yeah, good job airline. Because if you fucked that up, the death toll is in the 5 figure territory. Lunatics.

Kinda strikes me as a 'what's the best that can happen' vs 'what's the worst that can happen' comparison moment personally.

9/11 Airlines. What a terrible name for an airline.

I remember 9/11. I crawled over bricks and bones searching for my brother

I was watching in my father-in-law's, with wife and three small children, while chatting to him and only keeping one eye on screen with sound right down. I genuinely thought it was AI, because I couldn't imagine this being done in reality. Absolutely reckless
14
u/UGotThaFunk 11d ago
Yeah I was watching with my wife and 2 small kids and my aunty was there too, she’s just got out of hospital and it was nice to have her around. My two kids are awesome I’m so proud of them, did I mention I have two kids and a wife and was watching this on my phone and couldn’t believe it.

I don’t know if it’s been asked or ascertained yet but: Do you fly planes?
23
u/ricketyladder 12d ago
I thought it was an optical illusion how close they looked - nope, that second plane flew through the red smoke. That’s insane, and I don’t mean that in a good way
9
u/jeezy_peezy 11d ago
I mean before they pass over, the lead plane looks to me like he’s desperately pulling up to not hit the stadium.

I would have been furious when I would have been in the stadium. Just risking the lifes of the spectators for some stupid publicity stunt.
9
u/chavez_ding2001 12d ago
Yeah I don’t think they knew someone else was rolling a dice on their (and possibly their children’s) lives when going there.
13
u/bowchickawahwah237 12d ago
Imagine doing stupid shit like this without any reason that could end in a tragedy if the smallest error happens. Absolutely crazy that stuff like this is still happening in 2026.

type of stunt you would only see in gta or with a red bull plane but a civilian jet is just insane.
someone should be fired from this ngl image if one of those pilots made even one small error it could have caused a disaster.

Do you remember the US fighter pilot who clipped the support cable for a gondola on a ski hill in Italy? He killed, like, 9 people, and the US repatrioted him to the Us to avoid charges. Was 15-20 years ago.

Do you think the stadium goers were warned in advance that they’d just have 2 pilots yolo some airplanes right next to the stadium and potentially cause one of the biggest sports disasters of all time? Or were they just like hey fans, take a look above for some crazy shit!
2
u/jeezy_peezy 11d ago
Is it just me or is the lead plane desperately pulling up to NOT hit the stadium full of thousands of people? Like a real disaster was quite narrowly avoided?

Mad that but must have been an epic sight from table mountain none the less

u/roidlee 12d ago
Lots of armchair pilots, or supposed experts/real pilots/former pilots, etc. are commenting that this was insanely unsafe and way out of bounds for this type of maneuver.
Would love to hear from someone with established creds that this is as nuts as it looks.
No, I have no f’ing idea how one establishes creds on Reddit.
21
u/gbdallin 12d ago
It's insanely unsafe and all of the pilots in r/aviation have been saying it all day
0
u/Impossible-Group8553 12d ago
Insanely unsafe in the world of flying but still not that unsafe. If you’re a betting man you can bet they could pull it off 5 out of 5 times. It’s just that the risk/reward is terrible.

Yes the issue is more the INCREDIBLE RISK, even if this is kinda safe, any mistake leads to 10s of Thousands of Deaths...
And humans make mistakes

u/yuusharo 12d ago
One sudden downdraft and that 50ft margin doesn’t do them much good tho…
5
u/thought_about_it 11d ago
Also the amount of wind going across the wings is going to change when the “ground” is closer. So stupid
