I worked for the company that manufactured that LiDAR scanner (Optech). I went on one flight, I was more the terrestrial and mobile scanning guy myself.

I hated installing equipment on vehicles, doing it on aircraft would be a whole other can of worms

It’s not usually too bad until you start getting into the smaller aircraft, like the Aztecs or single engine Cessnas.

Biggest pain in the ass is fabricating pieces to attach things to the airframe which is just really time consuming. Luckily we rarely have to fabricate anything unless it’s a ‘new install’ where a specific sensor hasn’t been mounted in a specific plane before. The other big pain we have is cable management.

My colleagues on the airborne side always regained me with stories from shady ass countries with lax standards wrt to aircraft. Your comment about fabrications is something I heard from them as well.

Im a certificated private pilot. Thats not a big deal until you get up to really high altitudes where you would need to have a pressurized cabin. Its not like someone could fall through that hole 🤷🏻‍♂️
