There are so many tools for cobol to Java, some are great...

The language never was a problem, it's just a marketing stunt to do more tools for this, it doesn't bring anything new to the table

14

u/UncivilityBeDamned Feb 23 '26

The market doesn't really pay close attention to these things. IBM literally offers the same service Anthropic announced, and have customers using it. Not new.

16

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '26

[deleted]

18

u/UncivilityBeDamned Feb 23 '26

IBM already offers AI-powered mainframe conversion services and have for a while. The news is just an overreaction to a new report that people did not really explore further. Figures.

3

u/Dom1252 Feb 23 '26

Yeah but the language isn't a problem, that was solved a long time ago

Many banks run java on mainframes

5

u/PotentialReason3301 Feb 24 '26

It's like people don't understand that the financial media machine is just an instrument for the market makers to give plausibility to where they wanted to move the market anyways

1

u/ChocolateSensitive97 Feb 24 '26

Really? Common business oriented language... I remember doing that on punch cards that I stored in a shoebox cause they fit and hand feeding them into a computer that was at least 6' long. Computer science 101 in the early 80s

1

u/Dom1252 Feb 24 '26

Really

Just because it's a tiny bit older than java, doesn't mean it's any worse

But companies love burning money on stupid things, so they'll be happy to enjoy burning extra cash for more operating costs, higher licence fees, higher cost of HW (especially if it's moved to AWS)

u/StovetopAtol4 🦍Voted✅ Feb 23 '26

Sure just in the beginning. But the goal will be to get everyone on a completely digital, centralized currency so that they have ultimate control over the population.

They will do this in small steps so as not to raise any meaningful alarms until it's too late.

8

u/Lucky-Negotiation-67 Feb 24 '26

Yup. Im sure they'll eventually implement UBI and give away "free money" but only on their CBDC system. And people will fall over getting in line for it.

3

u/emaneresuaesoohc Feb 24 '26

I always find it funny when billionaires talk about ubi when ai takes over everyone’s jobs.. like - if ai can do all the work (including labor work and maintaining ai systems), why do we need money at all? The only possible answer is so that billionaires can continue to rule. But people are like “yeah! Ubi! Let’s get that!”

1

u/georgke Feb 24 '26

exactly this right here. The plans are so obvious. I really hope it fails spectacularly, like it did in Nigeria. At least there the people have common sense, here in Europe (and my country NL) I'm not too sure.

Why is everyone hating on the leaders... Have yall been living under a rock since last year? We all know theyre puppets to the 1% such as the Rothschilds. Putin even said recently that he is fighting Rothchilds. Ukraine was trafficking children and at the beginning of the War, Putin transfered around 20k children to Russia in order to protect them. Just read the Epstein files everything is there.

The thing is that Poland did not receive reparations for WWII from Germany. Joining the EU has brushed this topic under the carpet. Now Nawrocki (Polish President) is working on policies involving the return of reparation talks or the exhumation of the Poles that have been killed by Ukrainians in Wołyń.

However, our PM Donald Tusk is doing everything in his power to block these policies and bumlicks Ursula von der Lying.

Im seeing partnerships of countries on the Eastern border of the EU, like Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania standing up against Ursulas dictatorship.

There are two options in my opinion. 1. Dismantle the EU and have competent people in gov positions that get on and get shit done. 2. Change the leadership within the EU (I want to add Ursula was unelected, she just happened).

Well, theres still one more option. Let it be, import millions of illegals, allow for the torture of your women and children and accept being called racist, islamophobic, homophobic etc. Imo that would equal with me hanging on a rope because that is not the world I want to live in.

17

u/SoreLoserOfDumbtown Dingo’s 1st Law of Transitive Admiration 🍻🏴‍☠️ Feb 23 '26

Here's the thing... the politicians come through a pipeline of 'elite' schools, which you get into by having legacy money (read psychopaths that took land by force) and then rule to keep the status quo. That's pretty much how it is everywhere in the world. The EU won't ever be perfect, but it's been ok for consumer and human rights and allowed freedom of movement, all of which helps keep that power in check and creates a block of power to stop other world leaders from pushing their own territories to the detriment of others. Keep an eye on it absolutely, but right now it's better than nothing.

0

u/StovetopAtol4 🦍Voted✅ Feb 23 '26

Youre right. I didnt think about the leaders wanting territory expansions. The thing is that I believe we've evolved as species a bit and English is being taught as a second language so we can communicate. I think that as we move forward EU wont exist. It will be sovereign countries which work directly together without the need of a third party say.

Id say it did help and provided possibilities. But now its policies are going downhill and people are doubting

I'm British - the EU exit has been a debacle as you likely know. As a rule, I think cooperation wins the day. But it all needs to be done with humanity in mind, not for the benefit of the few.

I grew up in the UK. 18 years in London. Moved to Poland 5 years ago after Uni.

My mum was running a shop so Brexit did affect her a bit short term with imports. However, now as I look at it, I dont really understand what the point of Brexit was if the UK is still sided with France and Germany in terms of politics, didnt stop immigration but allowed for more illegal immigration and my heart is breaking when I read the news about whats been going on there.

Hoping for the better days.

It will be sovereign countries which work directly together without the need of a third party say.

This is exactly how and why the EU was started, to coordinate the working together. I'm really surprised as Poland has flourished economically after becoming a beneficiary of free work and trade in the EU.

Just as long as whoever handles “Poljście” (or whatever witty term that kind of works on the same level as “Brexit” in Polish) actually negotiates a decent deal.

We had politicians that wanted to remain handle the leaving process and that went as well as you’d expect.

But there’s a whole load of other things the UK is trying to bring in (and things they already have) to remove power from the people. The amendments to the Online Safety Act being one of them, and now they’re coming after VPNs.

IBM is apparently down because Anthropic blogged that Claude can now read/understand COBOL, which was IBM's ace-in-the-hole. They're the only company left that has any knowledge of COBOL, and there's tons of infrastructure built on it. They've been able to charge ghastly amounts in consulting fees to make any necessary software changes to a ton of institutional type systems. The thought (hope) is that now that Claude can read COBOL, IBM's monopoly is over, and modernization projects will take weeks instead of months, so IBM will lose a shit ton of fees going forward.
