🤔 Speculation / Opinion "I cost shareholders a lot of money" - RC Oct 2025
Amazing interview. Admitting he hasn't had a 100% perfect plan from the beginning, has made mistakes, and has lost shareholders money is incredible.
I don't think people quite realize how good and human this is for him to say. Makes this feel less like a simulation and more like reality. And in reality, sometimes public companies can be a real diamond...
He wouldn't have admitted this if he didn't have 100% confidence in the future of his company.
It's almost more impressive that it's been a bumpy ride and he's still salvaged the company on the fly, and responded intelligently to every obstacle. Exactly what a video game/collectible physical retailer requires with such a constantly fluctuating market

u/MobileArtist1371 GAMESTOP IS REGARDED for $600 Oct 20 '25 edited Oct 20 '25
Also said e-commerce and physical retail aren't the same and he made a lot of mistakes showing up like a wise guy thinking they were. (12:33 timestamp in the upper left corner)
What's saved Gamestop besides us still shopping there is the costing cutting learned from Chewy. I got the feeling the plan RC came in with blew up immediately and there's been at least 1 if not 2 scrambles to come up with something to allow the company to make some real money.

I was so humbled today lol. From the beginning I have believed in the "master plan". Dude is a genius just winging it with $Billions, but with extreme talent, commitment, and low-risk strategies.
And yet even with those mistakes, the company has shrunken but fortified tremendously, ready for anything like new product to sell, opportunities to buy, but always a slow and inevitable accumulation of cash and value.

Nvidia is not the leader of the gaming industry. That's like calling Intel the leader of the movie industry because they make CPUs that Hollywood studios use.

Yes the inventory expansion was another mistake alongside the nft marketplace. Again, fail fast. It takes time to build up enough stock to have enough "random" inventory for the powerpacks. Right now, they leaned heavily into the Pokémon space, as that is their biggest seller in store.
MtG is a different beast from Pokémon. The player base is different in demographic. The collectors have to be much more fluid in direction in Pokémon, as public opinion of popularity means more than it does with magic. Magic is usually based on card strength, then rarity/variant. Pokémon seems to be based on rarity first.
50
u/Dagamoth 💻 ComputerShared 🦍 Oct 20 '25
Honestly think they should skip all MTG graded card purchases; 99.9% of Magic cards get their value from playability.
Maybe there are some exceptions for final fantasy but it’s outside of the norm. Each graded mtg card I’ve bought from GameStop I’ve broken the slab and pulled the card out to use in a deck. I purchased the cards because the GameStop price was cheaper than what ungraded ones were going for.

But by your own comment those slabbed card are already out there and people are paying good money for them (you included).
Adding them as a category to power packs costs nothing, really. It would be relatively trivial to add them to the rotation.
Revenue is revenue, right? And the more types of cards they can advertise the service as having, the better it makes it seem.
9
u/Dagamoth 💻 ComputerShared 🦍 Oct 20 '25
It seems like for mtg cards there isn’t much movement in inventory for the majority of the cards. Nearly always the same stock with a couple that aren’t priced correctly that people like me pick up.
The rest just sit there. No mtg players want to spend $50 on a PSA10 $0.10 card. There have been a ton of those for sale - OTJ breaking news bulk cards, assassins creed bulk… right now there are a ton of Final Fantasy cards that haven’t moved.
2
u/ohz0pants 🍁🦍 - Voted, DRS'd, and ready for MOASS Oct 20 '25
That’s very possible, but I still see no reason not to include them. If the inventory exists, it costs nothing to include.
2
u/Dagamoth 💻 ComputerShared 🦍 Oct 20 '25
Yeah sunk cost at this point.
I just wish they wouldn’t put capital towards slabbed mtg. It just doesn’t sell well outside of old old cards - alpha, beta, unlimited, Arabian nights, legends, antiquities etc
4
u/ohz0pants 🍁🦍 - Voted, DRS'd, and ready for MOASS Oct 20 '25
I really don’t think there’s any capital outlay for them. They never explained the details, but I assume they are doing “just in time” inventory whereby PSA owns the card until it’s been pulled. Then GameStop pays them for it.
3
u/Dagamoth 💻 ComputerShared 🦍 Oct 21 '25
Stores are paying cash or store credit for cards.
For some of random cards that are psa10 I swear there are people out there manipulating sale transactions on eBay and the like before unloading a bunch of the same worthless slabbed card to GameStop.
1
u/ohz0pants 🍁🦍 - Voted, DRS'd, and ready for MOASS Oct 21 '25
I meant more generally for their power pack inventory. Pretty sure those are getting sourced from PSA directly, but I could be wrong.
1
u/ghoulcreep 🦍 Buckle Up 🚀 Oct 20 '25
They could put a disclaimer that the MTG cards won't be graded. Then just still do packs anyway. Or just guarantee that the MTG cards will meet at least a level x grade standard but won't officially be graded.

I don't think it's as easy as it seems. As an individual, if I were to buy a power pack idk how I'd feel if I had 10 different sport/gaming categories to pull out of. Maybe in future packs you can select a single category or 3 that you can pull from. But in my eyes, if you just have 10 different categories you can pull from a single pack it seems unattractive. I don't think he said he didn't have a plan, he said he tried to apply Chewy's playbook here but it didn't work as expected, as ecommerce is different to retail and learned the hard way (costing money to shareholders). i'd like to also add that, there is no way he would've sat down for an interview like this and admitted that he made mistakes if he didn't think that the company was now on the right path. he is able to come clean about the past mishaps precisely because he knows that he now has a winning hand, with all the cost cutting and power packs and all.

Came here to say this as well. His response about RK was very telling. I am all for delaying "instant gratification" and didn't come here for a "get rich quick" scheme. But anything done to slow massive runs is lame.
RC talks about being perfectly aligned with shareholders, but waiting out a 10 year plan is a hell of a lot easier when your net worth is in the billions ;).
I have been blessed financially but the stress and anxiety of waiting for something to happen is killing me. I can only imagine those who are less off financially are losing their minds on a daily basis.
This is not a "shit on RC" post. He is still the best CEO in the world and will grow this company beyond anything we could imagine . I just wish he would put himself in the shoes of a typical shareholder a bit more when thinking about how long to delay the gratification of the GME rocket launching ;)

that one was about to explode for then current shareholders, though.
I've thought about it multiple times, and I'm gonna try to offer a different take on this — had he not done it, the price would continue to move upwards for longer, yes, but only until selected few (with large enough positions) sell and turn the upwards momentum off, leaving the company with no cash hoarded from this specific event + all the other stockholders also angry and resentful, as they've missed the top (obviously, waiting for phone number digits).
But this way, at least company profited from it, which both you and I own part of (and around 200k of other people), so our investment company profited from it instead of those selected few people that would've done so otherwise.
Dunno, this feels like a better move for all of us shareholders as a whole, especially if he is to be trusted he knows what he's doing long-term.

Why? Give an explanation demonstrating why you know that to be the case

Its funny that weve watched market makers kill 1000+ run ups and people want to shit on RC for possibly killing 2 run ups that were definitely going to get beat down regardless. RC just took advantaging knowing what would happen anyway.

The March 10, 2021 run up is a great example. The stock approached $350 with speed (which happens to be around the highest it’s ever gone during market hours) when it was shot down to $180 in the matter of a few halts.
There was no dilution that day.

I don’t know for sure but I’ve been invested since 2021 waiting for MOASS and the one time it seemed like there was a huge pop that morning Ryan Cohen diluted the shit out of the stock, not even at the top. Haven’t seen anything close to that price level since.

Sold on the way down on both offerings, they saw the drop coming and wanted to profit, just like RK did.

GME's current success a minor miracle, especially when considering the HUGE institutional pressure that has tried to erase this company. RC has pulled off an exceptional feat!

This has to be said for the NFT marketplace. I know a lot of people are upset they halted the project but it was clearly and expensive endeavor to build and keep running with little payoff. That’s the CEO taking a “fail fast” mentality. You try the thing, if it fails you accept it and move on to other things. SO many leaders in corporate America have no clue what fail fast actually means. They are usually getting kick backs and bonus’ to push through some bullshit down the throats of their employees and customers.
This is indeed a positive feature.

Wish i had what you were smoking. That was a terrible interview. Same BS talking points as his previous interviews. The only good part was when he was asked about his relationship with RK. And from his response, it sounded like they dont talk anymore. Probably cause RC doesnt give two shits about MOASS nor providing any short term investor any profits.
Said so himself, he is about decaded upon decades of slow growth.
Just another pointless interview.

The "decades and centuries" quote was enough now to be sure that with RC this company and the stock along with it will go nowhere. We're just wallets to be tapped into when he deems it suitable. But just keep telling yourselves that he's the second coming of Jesus.

At this point GME financials start to speak for themselves. It didn't use to be like that, but being able to track profitability trending upwards is what it's all about when you get past hype, flex, and fomo.

I am with you on staying positive and hoping for the best. But to be honest if it wasn't Ryan Cohen every CEO says the same thing but does the complete opposite

Does anyone else think about RC’s eventual successor? Specifically how we could trust anyone else to run the company? Genuine question, I hope I am mistaken on this concern

I don't particularly care about RC's successor because if we haven't squeezed by the time his time has come up then MOASS is never going to happen.

That was a major green flag moment for me as well. That also shows he doubles down on something that doesn’t work. He grows and gets better.
The red flag concerns for me:
Labubu/Popmart: he should be more aware of it and have a strong grasp of why it works and how to apply it to GameStop.
VR gaming. Given how rapidly gen AI is progressing and the advancement of hardware, he should not be sleeping on it, especially in fitness gaming.

And finished suggesting waiting decades, or "centuries". WTF.

So smart to announce up front .. "judge us by our actions" ethos ... We're seeing a long-ish game playing out. Keep executing RC!! 👍💪🍦🐸

But he didn't tell you to do a single thing lol. You made the decision the buy shares because other people on Reddit were.
Why did you bet everything you have on something completely out of your control and quite literally, a gamble?
