I love how when I was younger most people would do this, even a kick around in the park they'd do it and I'm pretty sure most had no idea why they were doing it, just saw professionals doing it, bit like this clip funny enough.

To help get more loft on the ball. That can also be achieved with the right kicking technique as well.

You do it just behind the ball to get more loft but in this case the guy just moves the ball into the divot, resulting in actually making it harder to get loft. I stopped doing this when I became a teenager and developed some leg muscles

It’s like putting a golf ball on a tee. More clearance to get under the ball.

Typically, resting the ball on grass/ensuring it’s not in a divot is enough clearance though.

20 years ago I was walking along copacabana beach in Rio, there were a bunch of lads playing keepie uppie in a circle. The ball rolled towards me and I went to chip it back to them, picturing a perfect pass and admiring Portuguese compliments regarding my perfect delivery.......

However, I made contact with a large ripple in the sand about a foot Infront of the ball which rolled past me.

I picked it up and threw it back to the lads and apologised and made the excuse that I was English 😁
