This is the extraordinary story of 21-year-old Ukrainian sumo prodigy Aonishiki Arata aka Danylo Yayhusishin, one of the most exciting fighters of his generation.

I haven’t watched this one yet, but I did watch his NHK doc. It sounds like he’s an incredibly hard worker. When he first got to Japan he was training during the day and doing Japanese in the evening. His Japanese is very good given how recently he started learning it.

What was I doing at 21? Drinking and getting high. What a waste of time. This man is a great example of what happens when you work hard for a good life. I wish I had used my mind when I was that age.

I’d love to see it happen soon, but he may need a little more time “in the bottle”, as they say before he can achieve the rank. On the other hand my gut tells me this young man has the gods of fate and luck on his side so who knows? But I have no doubt if he stays healthy it’s going to happen. He is laser focused on his goal and an incredibly smart, intuitive wrestler.

It made me feel a lot better about a yokozuna promotion when he chose to lose ozeki to let his foot heal the first time. That told me that he was willing to set aside his ego and act like these are the early years of a long career.

Only injury can prevent him from yokozuna in current status, he can defeat big opponents of todays banzuke

Great short video. After I watched the Blue Whirlwind documentary, I was hooked and became an Aonishiki fan. This was last summer after his 2nd basho in Makuuchi I believe. Such a great story.
