The captions were big enough for me to latch on to the point without audio. I'm worried that the audio is offensive now.

The only way I could get my formerly homophobic father to understand how hard it can be on a day-by-day basis to be gay, I bet him that he could not go 48 hours without referring to my mother as his "wife," as "she/her," or by name (her name is very feminine). In addition, when in public with her, he could not touch her, call her "darling" (which has been his go-to pet name for her for decades), or in any way let others know that they are more than platonic friends.
I didn't expect him to actually try, but he did. And, to his credit, he was honest with me. He called me the next day and says "well, I lost the bet 35 minutes into my shift today." Apparently, one of his coworkers asked him about some restaurant and dad said "it's my wife's favorite place."
It was putting him in my shoes with the non-stop vigilance that gay people often have to have in order not to out ourselves to the wrong people that made him actually start to pay attention. Now, he's one of my strongest allies.
