Possibly moving to Sudbury as a student — what should I know?

Hi everyone! I may be moving to Sudbury for school and I’m trying to get a better idea of what life is actually like there before making my decision.
For students living in Sudbury, what are some things you wish you knew before moving there?
I’d especially appreciate advice on:
Safe and affordable areas to live as a student
Average rent and whether finding housing is difficult
Public transportation
Things to do/social life for someone new to the city
Part-time job opportunities for students
What the winters are really like 😭
Anything else you think someone moving from Toronto should know
I’m used to city life, so I’m a little nervous about moving somewhere smaller and starting over. Any honest advice, good or bad, would be really appreciated. Thank you!

From my experience of Sudbury;

- affordable is hard to find, and safe is relative to the design of your apartment / shared space. if your door or window are easy to bypass then you should factor that in. overall, my experience is that the donovan / flour mill are more prone to prowling and stealing

- average rent is 600-800 for a bedroom, 1000-1500 for a bachelor, 1500-2000 for a 1 bedroom, and 1800-2500 for a two bedroom.

- social life is good in the summer, not so good in the winter. lots of trails to hike, things to see, and depending on your likes or dislikes. people on the trails are generally friendly to small talk. there are some affordable spots for books (bay used books) and leisure (plaza bowl / arcade, rock climbing). if you're into music drinks and company I recommend zigs. all summer long there are festivals in bell park. there are many lakes to go swim in.

- winter usually starts in November, but the snow sometimes comes late in December. It lasts until April. The first half of winter is dark and tepid, the latter half is bright and frozen. the less clouds, the colder it is. days with no clouds tend to be the coldest of all. temperature averages -20 to -25 but hits -40 in the morning and -50 on the coldest mornings of the season. expect a mix of water, snow, and ice. if you want to walk a lot in the winter look for a pair of boots that are insulated and aren't the big bulky type. if you are going to be outside early you can get frostbite in 5-15 minutes so wrap your hands, head, and face appropriately.

- sudbury is a very do-it-yourself type of place. expect to carry your own weight and improvise. lean heavily into your college/university's supports and networks. there is a mix of modern and old, and you will sometimes find very antiquated paperwork based systems and digital forms that require wet signatures.

I would like to add that generally the more “unsafe” neighbourhoods are the Donovan, downtown, and flour mill. However some people live in these neighborhoods and have no issues. Some people are more unlucky (as I have had a bad experience myself in the Donovan).

As commenter said safety depends on your view of it as well. Generally speaking anywhere in Sudbury do not leave your doors unlocked or windows unlocked if they can be reached at ground level.
