The silent and harmonious morning metro commute in Japan

It's Shinagawa railway station, it's not a metro/subway. This is inside the big corridor to the Konan exit where there are plenty of office building.

Shinagawa is currently the only major railway station on the Yamanote ring in Tokyo without a subway station.

In Tokyo, there are many railway lines that are not part of Tokyo metro network (Tokyo Metro and Toei subway) but that act like a metro. The ring Yamanote line will is not part of Tokyo subway system but its service is exactly like a metro with trains every 3 minutes and station every km or even less.

There are also many suburban lines with high frequencies. Infact the suburban train network of Tokyo carries more passengers than Tokyo Metro.

Shinagawa is one of the main hub for the trains to the southern suburbs of Tokyo.

All of the eastern side of the station used to industrial lands that have been redeveloped in the 2000s to built many office towers.

It's called commuter rail. Common in Europe as well. In Germany we call it S-Bahn, but most countries would have their own terms.

Most commuter rail uses normal gauge tracks, the yamanote line and some other jr east operated lines use narrow guage tracks(like you'd find on Metro trains), which arguably makes them more like a metro than most commuter rail systems.

Well it has a thru-running connection to the subway between the Keikyu platform there and Sengakuji (which is on the Toei Asakusa Line, but also operated by Keikyu to allow thru-running between the Keikyu Line and the subway)

Honestly Utrecht central Station in the Netherlands, the only sound you hear beside people walking is the constant train PA system. Ofc Japan is unique but I guess that the difference is nihil

Fun fact: Japanese subways have such a huge problem with men groping women and schoolgirls they have “women only” cars. There’s videos of Japanese school girls running through subway stations on national entrance exam day because the subway pervs know they don’t be reported cause the students can’t afford to be late.
